CHAPTER 281
Greg was tempted to throw the assassin's failure back in her own face. The woman had failed, not from poor planning or execution on her part. Instead, several factors that no reasonable person would have been expected to anticipate had thwarted her plans. The poison she had used against Reina was potent enough that it should have killed her in a matter of seconds. Even with a third-tier healer onboard, this was the kind of poison that no third-tier mage should have been able to deal with. How was she supposed to know that his teacher wasn't actually a third-tier mage as her mana would seem to suggest. Using techniques from tiers far higher than the third tier that she could currently match, his teacher had brought Reina back from the brink of death. The assassin's disguise had been perfect. Forget Olivia and Greg, the assassin had managed to fool Captain Tharion who'd been the first mate's friend for many years now. How was she supposed to prepare for a young man with the eyes of a
CHAPTER 282
Despite having a terrible daughter, my mother did her best. Life, unfortunately, cares nothing for how good one is, or how hard they try. I was seven cycles, I think, when she fell ill. Three long torturous cycles filled with suffering later she died. She'd long since been kicked out of the brothel due to her illness, but even on her last day, she'd been out doing anything she could, trying to provide for me. I used to think that my life was the worst it could be," the assassin spoke, a mirthless chuckle escaping her lips. "The next few months were a blur of begging and scavenging in the streets scrabbling to survive. Growing up with my mother, I had a deep distrust of men, not to mention resentment. Life, however, would teach me that women could be just as cruel, if not worse," "I'd been just a few months in the street when she approached me. Desperate, hungry, and alone, she told me everything I wanted to hear. I'd be strong, I'd be powerful. I'd never lack for a thing. Little did
CHAPTER 283
"Becoming a mind mage didn't change me immediately. For many cycles, I was the ruthless blade my masters desired me to be. However, with access to their minds, my victims were no longer just targets, they were actual people. People with hopes, dreams, people they cared about and that cared about them. It's one thing to have a man beg you to spare them as he has a child at home waiting for him. It's another thing to feel their pain and despair at the thought that they might never see their family ever again. It's one thing to steal from an alchemist to give your masters a competitive advantage. It's another thing when you can look into the alchemist's mind and see that they planned to use the discovery to improve the lives of those around them, whereas to your masters, the discovery would only amount to figures on a page. It's one thing to know that children feel fear too. It's another thing to know that the fear of a child is much more raw and pure than that of an adult. Even worse, t
CHAPTER 284
The smile he had on his face the rest of the day after Reina left, you'd think that the whole guild had already been handed to him. Given this, it didn't really come as that much of a shock when I was tasked with killing her. I was also asked to eliminate everyone on board so that when Reina's father came to investigate, he'd find nothing. It was a broad enough order that I immediately knew that this would be my only chance. The chance to take at least one member of that abominable family down and kill myself while at it. So that's just what I did. I didn't poison my target until we were well inside the black zone. I wasn't defying my orders, I was just deciding the best way to execute them, which was latitude that had always been given to me. I still fully meant to kill Reina. Which I did. As for the other task, with the airship already inside the black zone, it was already taken care of. If I just so happen to have been in the airship while it crossed over into the black zone, then
CHAPTER 285
"You need to be prepared to leave me behind."Greg's tone was calm but no less firm because of it. He had hit a wall. Over the last two days, Greg had spent every second doing nothing but trying to come up with even one viable way his family and allies could make it out of the black zone unharmed. In the face of the kind of powerhouses that he would be dealing with, however, there was only so far that clever schemes could take you. If any single one of the three, the world serpent, the Primordial, or Morpheus, wanted those aboard the ship dead, then there was very little they could do to avoid that fate. Even more daunting was the fact that, they didn't need to have any ill-will towards them to pose a lethal threat. If anything, Greg was certain that none of the three hated any of the mortals aboard the airship. They just didn't care one way or the other. If a fight broke out, they wouldn't be holding back on their account. The shockwaves from that fight would be enough to do the ones
CHAPTER 286
His teacher continued to glare at him, her eyes searching his to see if he actually meant what he'd said. When Greg continued to meet her gaze unflinching, a smile slowly crossed her lips. "Good," she said even as she reached up and picked up. "I'm not stupid enough to betray someone linked to a deity. That said, not everyone you encounter in this life will be trustworthy. Caution doesn't always temper greed. Given the world we live in, it's almost inevitable that, one day, someone you once called a friend will betray you. If and when that day comes, don't let the past blind you to the truth that is before your eyes. The price for that naïveté could prove far costlier than you ever thought possible," she cautioned him, a haunted look in her eyes even as she pulled the ring onto her finger. The look, however, didn't last long as his teacher pushed the thoughts away and looked up at him. "Your family will be taken care of," she promised, both her tone and demeanor conveying that she mea
CHAPTER 287
Greg walked onto the deck of the airship to find almost everyone there standing at the railing. His mother, sister, Lothar Calyn and Athalia were all looking at the city full of towering skyscrapers. Greg knew that even in his former world, the towering edifices of wood and stone would have been marvels to look at. Given that this was a city locked inside a black zone, they couldn't exactly source building materials from somewhere else. They had thus been forced to make use of the two most abundant resources available to them. Earth and trees. Greg didn't know if there were plant-specific mages or if this was some special application of life magic he was looking at. Rather than buildings, it would be more accurate to say that they were looking at gargantuan trees embedded with stone houses all along the trunks. Not hanging, but embedded. And as if that wasn't impressive enough, Greg was almost certain that there were corridors and hallways within the trees. Otherwise, given the lack o
CHAPTER 288
Greg still couldn't work out what favor it was that was called on that caused the primordial to agree to take their side in this ordeal. Going over his memories, the only thing that he could pick out to explain this was when Morpheus pretended to be an Elder and got the Primordial to promise to do him three favors. But then, Greg didn't have to think long to realize that this couldn't have possibly been the reason. No Elder in existence would have been threatened by a baby world serpent. Whether attached to a mortal or not. The very fact that Morpheus needed help should have been enough to nullify those three owed favors. Whatever favor this was that Morpheus was calling on, it was something else. But while he had no definite answers from the deity, Greg had his own suspicions. Unless Greg had other gaps in his memory that he wasn't aware of, there was only one time when Morpheus had acted without Greg being aware of it. The pirate attack on their airship. The attack itself wasn't w
CHAPTER 289
Thick, cloying, invasive, disorienting... Greg had been prepared for any number of things when they crossed the boundary into the city and the denizens of the city were free to attack. What he hadn't been prepared for was the environment itself being the first obstacle that they had to overcome. Mana in the air was usually like the slight scent of flowers in a meadow. Not hard to detect if one turned their attention to it but usually subtle enough that one could easily relegate it to the background without even noticing. The moment they crossed over the wall that marked the edge of the city, however, it felt like he'd gone from breathing freely to having a pillow pushed against his face and being asked to breathe through it. Greg turned as he heard thuds on the wooden floor of the deck. Greg turned to find that both his mother and sister had fallen to the floor unconscious. Lothar, Calyn, and Athalia, weren't passed out yet, but from the way they were swaying unsteadily on their fee
CHAPTER 290
Greg remained on his feet, but just barely. He had no idea whether those from the other airships could see the world serpent or not. For all he knew, those from the other ship could only see him and Olivia standing on the bow of the airship. Greg wouldn't put it past the devious snake to hide herself until after he was forced down to his knees and only then, make her appearance. To their enemies, it would look like Greg had sensed the coming of the true powerhouse and knelt in deference. Whatever the case, Greg refused to let him on his knees be the first impression of him that these people got. Thus, clenching his jaw until it hurt and feeling a vein throb on his forehead, Greg did his best to endure. The silence stretched on long enough that Greg could almost see the greed start to build in the eyes of those on the other airships, men and women alike. "Aren't you going to say something?" In the end, it was Olivia who finally broke the silence, her question aimed at the back of the
