Chapter 131
THE FAINT LINE Before Elena could respond, they both heard a sound coming from the front door. Laura turned immediately, her eyes widened, but she didn't want Elena to know.“It seems sir Manuel is around now.” Elena said, glancing over her shoulder. “Should I tell him you're here…”“No!” Laura said almost immediately, like she was frightened.“Tell him, I've left…” Laura said and rushed out immediately before she did, carrying some of the documents she was reviewing.Elena stood looking for a while, before she finally left to meet Manuel, who was already at the left wing of the house.“Welcome sir…” Elena greeted immediately.Manuel turned and stared as though he was looking for something, but didn't want to ask directly. “Did she leave already?” Elena paused by the doorway, her hands folded neatly in front of her apron. “Ms. Laura should be in her room, sir,” she replied softly, before she remembered Laura told her to tell him she left. Left to where exactly?! She doesn't leave

FINALLY FOUND THE BUTLER?!Laura suddenly heard a voice outside and immediately rushed out. She saw one of the maids at the far end of the hallway and signalled for her to come. “Did anyone come through this hallway tonight?”Laura asked with a stern expression, her hand still resting on the door handle behind her. Then, her expression went over to the night guard stationed near the staircase. He looked surprised she was addressing him directly. “No, ma’am. Only Elena passed through earlier… and Mr. Manuel went toward the east wing study.”Laura nodded. “Good,” she said quietly before stepping back inside. She closed the door slowly, listening to the faint echo it will make. She stood there for a moment, her palm resting on the wooden surface of the door as she listened carefully for footsteps, but she didn't hear any.Laura inhaled slowly, her breathing had grown shallow without her noticing.“You’re not snooping,” she murmured to herself under her breath. “You’re protecting him.”

LETTER TO MANUEL “So there was never a butler, then who was?” Laura muttered to herself, tapping the table lightly with her fingers. Just then, it started raining and she could barely hear herself inside. She stared at the tablet screen again, at the repeating override command codes filling the Butler authorization field. The cursor blinked steadily beneath them. She couldn't believe that after all their effort, what they were looking for never existed. It pained her to the bones, but she couldn't change the fact. Her fingers trembled. Slowly, she lowered the tablet onto Manuel’s desk and turned back toward the hidden compartment beneath it. The narrow panel remained open, revealing the sealed envelopes she had only partially reviewed. If the Butler was fabricated, then the reason had t

MANUEL'S FATE SEALED?Laura stepped out feeling disoriented. Everything have now taken a new course. Some minutes back, she wanted to tell Manuel about the butler that never existed, but now, it felt different. How will Manuel feel? What'll he do it I tell him everything? She thought, her arms folded across her chest. The rain had softened by the time Laura stepped fully outside, through the back terrace. She didn’t even remember walking there, because her mind was clouded with different thoughts. One moment she had been standing in Manuel’s study with Dave’s letter trembling in her hands. The next, she was outside, standing in the middle of the villa like someone who was lost. The terrace lights were dimmed and it hid her well in the darkness. The garden wasn't far from where she was standing and she thought of going over there to think of what to do, but she changed her mind quickly.

TIME TO HUNT The room stayed quiet long after Manuel said the name. He clenched his jaw, his arms tight by his side. “Tommy Lyden. You had the guts!” He yelled, breathing hard. Laura stood across from him, watching carefully. She expected something louder than that or maybe, a hand slamming against the desk and losing it all, but none of that came. Manuel folded the letter precisely, then he placed it flat on the desk as his shoulders straightened slowly. They always knew Tommy was never a friend, he had been fighting underneath, but they never knew the length he could go to get things done. Manuel has been hesitating for so long and it didn't feel like it anymore. He walked past her toward the window. He was boiling inside, but he knew who he was supposed to vent his anger on, so he needed to calm his nerves for now. He stood there for a long moment, his hands clasped behind his back. Laura didn’t interrupt. She could almost see the pieces moving behind his eyes. Tommy’

THE MASK SLIPS****The next morning started like any other, or at least that’s what Manuel told himself. He adjusted the cuff of his shirt inside the backseat of the car, eyes fixed ahead and his jaw tight. He had barely slept, he was thinking of everything that happened last night and how he saw. He couldn't still believe anyone would go so much length to hurt another. He swallowed hard, accepting the reality before him. He couldn't eat that morning, he had lost his appetite. He had seen the worried look on Laura's face when he said he wasn't taking anything. He didn't want to hurt her in anyway, but sometimes it happens. The file from last night sat heavy in his mind. Tommy Lyden. The name still echoed.Laura was driving him and all the time they were in the car, they didn't speak to each other. It looked as though, they both had something that was bothering them.Just then, the car slowed. Manuel frowned slightly. They weren’t at the entrance yet, but they weren't far either. Fr

THE SILENT COUNTERSTRIKE Laura cleared her throat slightly. “We already have internal compliance audits running.”Tommy nodded politely. “Of course. This would simply reinforce confidence.”There was silence for a while, as each person stared at the other.Manuel didn’t rush to speak, he didn't want to react emotionally. He was studying Tommy.Years ago, Manuel might have believed this display. Might have bought the loyalty Tommy displayed, but not after understanding everything Tommy has planned.Manuel folded his hands on the table.“We will consider it,” he said finally. “After reviewing internal data.”Tommy nodded, satisfied for now. The meeting continued, but Manuel barely heard the rest. His attention stayed on Tommy. Every time someone spoke, Tommy’s eyes would go to Manuel first and Laura noticed it.She leaned slightly toward Manuel during a pause, whispering it to him. “He’s studying you.”Manuel didn’t look at her. “I know.”Soon the board meeting ended and they all dispe

DINNER WITH ME?The office was quiet again, but Laura was still staring at where Orland stood few minutes ago, before she finally settled.Manuel on the other hand stood still for a moment, staring at the closed door like he could still see through it. Laura watched him carefully. She knew that look. When he stopped reacting, when his face went blank like that, it meant he was thinking ten steps ahead.Without saying anything, Manuel walked to the bookshelf behind his desk. It wasn’t one of the decorative ones. This shelf was different and it belonged to his father. He ran his fingers along them slowly, then stopped at one. He pulled it out. It looked ordinary, with a dark brown cover and no title on spine He walked back to the desk and placed it in front of Laura. “Open it,” he said. She raised an eyebrow but did as he said. The book wasn’t really a book, it was hollowed out in the middle.Inside were folded documents, old papers and handwritten notes and it also contained names.L

AT THE BAR Manuel’s thumb brushed lightly against her skin, as he removed the small speck of dust near her eye.“There,” he said quietly, smiling deeply.Christopher's hand curled into a fist as he stared at them.“So, this is how busy you’re Laura..…..”Christopher didn’t wait. He just pulled out his phone the second he saw Manuel’s hand near Laura’s face.He stepped away from the window, jaw tight, breathing hard. He dialed Manuel’s number and it rang. He looked back at Manuel to see if he'll pick the call, but he didn't.He dialed his number again, but there was no answer. Christopher’s grip tightened around the phone.“Pick up,” he muttered under his breath. It kept ringing. Inside the hostel, Manuel’s phone lay face down on the table beside his plate. The screen lit up once, silently, then went dark again.Manuel never noticed.Christopher stared at his phone as the call ended and he called again, but this time around, it went straight to voicemail. He laughed bitterly. “Of co

THE SURPRISE Christopher didn’t even hear her. He was slumped halfway off the bed now, mumbling something about Laura.Mira grabbed her top from the floor and put it back on quickly. She looked at him one last time. All that admiration she carried quietly for months faded immediately. She walked to the door and stood to look at him again. “Pathetic,” she muttered. Then she left him there, alone.____HAWTHORNE HOTEL Manuel and Laura's dinner stretched longer than they expected. They were talking and laughing at silly jokes. The Hawthorne Hotel had that quiet warmth to it. You could just relax and forget all your worries.Laura noticed something different about him from the moment the food arrived. He wasn’t distracted and he wasn’t on his phone. He was focused on her. “You didn’t have to do this,” she said quietly, fingers brushing the edge of her glass. He leaned back slightly, watching her in that calm way of his. “I wanted to.”“For what?”“For everything,” he replied simply.S
