CHAPTER 21: AFTERSHOCKS
AFTERSHOCKS His eyes snapped open with a loud gasp. His chest rose and fell heavily as he took in sharp breaths. A rotten smell instantly filled his lungs and he gagged. Slowly, he looked around. Wet pavement. Trash bags. Headlights whizzing past him. Those bastards had left him by the sidewalk outside the hotel in a heap of rain-soaked trash bags. “Fucking hell," he muttered under his breath as a rat ran across his chest and disappeared beneath the bags. Closing his eyes, he tried to move but was immediately pulled back down by the pain screaming through his ribs. He groaned through gritted teeth as his head began to bang. Blood coated his lips and the taste of iron filled his mouth. They had beaten him up so bad, but at least they had left him breathing. He looked up at the night sky, his body aching all over. “Nope," he muttered in a hoarse voice. “I think I'll just… lay here for a while.” Eyes shut, he sank into the bags as he tried steadying his breathing.
CHAPTER 22: ROOM A17... LINA
ROOM A17… LINA Elara slipped into the cab, her purse clutched tight to her chest as the vehicle slowly zoomed off. Buildings whizzed past in a blur and her mind drifted back to the past–to the graveyard, to the men that had drugged her and tried raping her… to Damien stepping in to save her. She had lost everything back then and had sunmen so low. And somehow, all thanks to the same man, she had risen again. The car came to a stop, the screech of tires pulling her out of her thoughts. She blinked, looking out the window. The hotel stood tall by the curb, its windows glinting in the sunlight. She turned to the driver, handing him a folded bill. “Thank you," she said with a small smile before stepping out onto the pavement. As the car counted the cash, she turned toward the building–and nearly collided with someone. “Oh, sorry," she gasped as she took a cautious step back. “I didn't see you–” She looked up and her throat tightened. Damien. He didn't acknowledge her
CHAPTER 23: THREADS AND TEETH
THREADS AND TEETHSebastian took in a deep breath as he sank into the edge of the couch. His swollen eye throbbed painfully under the ice pack pressed to his face and every heartbeat pulsed through his skull like a hammer strike. His gaze dropped down to the nurse leaning before him–dark flowing hair, green eyes, cherry lips. He watched her steady fingers stitch the hole on his shoulder. “You're lucky the bullet didn't leave an exit wound," she said as her fingers brushed his skin slightly. “You would have lost more blood than you did.”A low grunt slipped out his lips as she pulled the final stitch tight. She looked up at him and he flashed her a soft smile. “You look like you're enjoying this," he whispered as his grin grew. She smiled back, rolling her eyes. "Just try not to move much,” she said gently as she snipped the last thread. "All done." She finished covering up the stitch with a bandage with the skill of someone who had done it a thousand times. Packing her equipments
CHAPTER 24: A COLD MORNING
A COLD MORNING The cold bench bit through his pants, stinging his ass despite the thickness of the fabric. Sebastian leaned forward, his gloved hands rubbing together as he let out a shaky breath. He pulled his gray sweatshirt over his head, the hood covering half of his face as he stared out ahead. The morning air bit his lungs every time he inhaled and it showed no mercy to his exposed fingers. He should have worn something more covering. The sun had still not risen but its glow could be seen coming from the east, over the lake. It would be long before any warmth would reach him. He blew down on his fingers, rubbed them together and slipped them under his arms. His shoulder still throbbed beneath the sweatshirt, though the stitch was now loose and the wound healing. Sadie had told him the dressing tomorrow would be the last. She’d called him lucky and teased him every time he winced from her stitching. He smirked quietly at the thought of having her over again tomorrow.
CHAPTER 25: CARDS, BLOOD AND BULLETS 1
CARDS, BLOOD AND BULLETS 1The soft glow of the morning sun filtered in through the glass walls of her office and cascaded down the marble tiles of Lina's office. A minimalist shelf at the corner glinted with the neatly labeled plaques of awards Elara had won over the years. A slim desk occupied the center, a tablet, laptop and different files arranged neatly over it. And sitting behind it with a steaming mug of coffee in hand was Lina. Sighing, she took a small sip of the coffee and looked up. She stared at Elara's office through her transparent wall, eyes fixated on the nameplate etched into the wall above the doorpost. Her fingers tightened around the card in her hand. Sebastian's card. It was lighter than she had expected–sleek, black and rough at the edges. She looked down at it as her thumb slowly brushed over the etched lettering of his name. She turned it over to the number printed at the back. Her stomach twisted. She gulped down what was left of the coffee. She could
CHAPTER 26: CARDS, BLOOD AND BULLETS 2
CARDS, BLOOD AND BULLETS 2.Sebastian kissed Sadie, his tongue entwining with hers as he ran a hand over her bare breasts. The soft nipples brushed against his chest and her breath poured down his lips as she pushed herself on top of him. But just as everything was about to get heated again, his phone rang. He tried ignoring it at first, but then it kept on ringing, severing the moment. “Ugh," he groaned as he pulled away. His fingers curled around the device as he brought it to his face and clicked the screen. His brows furrowed. "Who's it,babe?” Sadie whispered as she leaned forward to stare at the screen. "An unknown number? Do you know who it is?”His eyes narrowed. He didn't need to think twice. Lina. “Give me a minute," he mumbled as he pulled her hand off his shoulder and turned away. He answered the call and placed it against his ear. “It took you so long to answer. I was starting to think you wouldn't reach me." Silence followed for a moment, disturbed only by the sou
CHAPTER 27: CARDS, BLOOD AND BULLETS 3
CARDS, BLOOD AND BULLETS 3The shot rang out, muffled a little by the silencer rolled onto its muzzle. The air cracked with the sound of the bullet whizzing past the room. Sadie's face froze, mouth agape as the bullet tore through her chest. Another struck her shoulder and the last ripped a chunk of her neck. Her body jerked once before falling onto the bed, her eyes still wide. Sebastian took in a deep breath, his grip tight around the gun as smoke curled faintly from it. He turned it slightly, staring at the barrel blankly before lowering it. He shut his eyes. “Fuck," he cursed loudly. A wet gurgle came from the limp body as Sadie still struggled to breath. He opened his eyes and stepped closer to the bed, stopping at the foot as his chest rose and fell hard. The white sheets had turned crimson, dripping with Sadie's blood. Her body lay twisted where she had fallen, one arm hanging limp off the edge. More blood pooled down from the hole in her throat as her eye twitched–staring
CHAPTER 28: A BODY IS A PROBLEM
A BODY IS A PROBLEM Sebastian looked around, his eyes taking in the small room as his mind ran with thoughts. The curtains were closed and the bed wasn’t huge–easy to clean up. Sadie lived a small life so there were no cameras. He walked up to the window and placed his fingers between the curtains, pushing them to the side just enough for him to see beyond the frosty glass. Her neighbors were far away–far enough not to hear through the gunshot suppressor. Still… he couldn't be so sure. He closed the curtain and turned back to the room. She had asked that they take their sexcapade and his wound-dressing to his cabin, away from town. He had refused. That was his mistake. He lowered the gun and dropped it carefully onto the bedside table. Slowly, he walked to the side and crouched, ignoring the sharp protest in his shoulders. His fingers dropped down to Sadie's wrist as he checked for a pulse he already knew wasn't there. Nothing. Now, he needed time to clean and dispose of
CHAPTER 29: MONEY HAS A SOUND
MONEY HAS A SOUNDLina dropped down onto her seat and placed her MacBook on her desk. She swivelled from side to side as her heart pounded so loudly in her chest. Her fingers worked its way around the keyboard as she opened her Venmo. She leaned back, staring at the figure on the screen. Two hundred and fifty-five thousand dollars. She placed her hand under her chin, chewing on her lip as the number remained. She blinked once, then again–it still remained. Her hand moved to the mouse and stopped over it, afraid that if she touched anything, the figure would vanish. That bastard, Sebastian, had really paid. After the call, she waited, battling with sleep as she kept her eyes on her phone screen. Two hours later, it came with a small ding. No message followed after. No explanation. She had stared at it for more than thirty minutes as reality slowly sank in–she was now two hundred thousand dollars richer than she was the morning before. Her boyfriend, Gary, had been working the nig
CHAPTER 30: BEHIND THE WALLS
BEHIND THE WALLS“... and how was the call with Zurich?" Damien pushed the door open and stepped to the side, letting Elara enter. “It went better than expected," she answered smiling. “They have asked for a merger now. Two other companies are in line too.”Damien followed behind her and the two stepped into Veyra Holdings, the glass doors sliding close smoothly before them. The lobby was filled with people, low conversations buzzing all round. Elara continued on as they walked, her tone lighter than he remembered from their first meeting months ago. He glanced at her, noticing the way her shoulders relaxed. There was an ease in her steps and a brightness to her eyes he never saw before. He recalled how she was back at the hotel when they first met. He chuckled inwardly at the image of her tossing the case at him. Now, here she was, laughing softly as they walked. He acknowledged it silently. “Our stocks have risen higher than they were before I even fell," she said, sighing. He
