Gabimaru's smile came back. But it was not the same smile it had been before the exchange. It was smaller. Quieter. The smile of something that has updated its assessment and is in the process of deciding what the updated assessment means for what comes next.He looked at Mira. Then at Asta. Then at the space between them, the specific geometry of two people who were standing together, who had just been tested separately and had both remained, and who were now oriented in the same direction.‘"Benimaru.”’ He said, his voice carrying something it had not carried before, not concern, not worry, but the specific quality of something that has determined that a situation requires a different level of attention than the level it initially allocated."’Yes."’Benimaru said.‘"We should stop holding back."’Roderick had been quiet through all of it.That was the thing about Roderick, he was the kind of person who went quiet when things got serious, not because he had nothing to say but becaus

A real step, not a lean, a full genuine step backward caused by the combined input of the sword catch and the compact burst, and when he landed the step his expression had done something that it had not done before in the entire duration of the encounter. It had gone neutral. Not flat like Benimaru's flat, something else. The smile was gone. Not because something bad had happened to him, not from pain, not from anger, but because the smile had been a response to a level of engagement and the level of engagement had changed and the smile was no longer the appropriate response to what was in front of him.He stood and looked at them.Mira was breathing hard. The Rakka-temperature burst had cost her something, she could feel it in the place behind her sternum where the flame lived when it wasn't being used, the small drain of having pushed the heat that high on short notice.Asta was not breathing hard.Asta was just looking at Gabimaru.Gabimaru looked back. The quiet in the moment was d

He held. Both knees in the dirt. Both hands on the hilt. The sword between him and the green flame with the specific quality of something that was doing its job at the exact limit of what it could do.Gabimaru was above him, pushing down. For three seconds neither of them moved. Then Mira arrived at Gabimaru's back. She did not use a technique with a name. She ran her flame through both palms to the temperature she had used in the crescent-shaped burst that had cost Gabimaru something during the chest hit in the previous exchange, and she put both palms flat against Gabimaru's back and she ‘’pushed.’’The sound of it was brief and significant.Gabimaru came off Asta, not from his own decision, from the input at his back and the momentum of the push carried him forward and Asta, already reading the change in the pressure on the sword, went sideways under the stumbling arc of Gabimaru passing overhead.Gabimaru hit the ground ahead of where Asta had been.He was on his feet before the w

Web hit the road backwards. Both boots scraping stone, the momentum of the last exchange carrying him two full steps before his legs locked and caught him. He stopped with his arms slightly out at his sides, the automatic balance response of a body that had just been pushed harder than it was expecting and was making a quick inventory of itself. He was breathing through his mouth. His chest was moving with it, the deep uneven rhythm of lungs that had been working at their ceiling recently and hadn't been given the signal that the ceiling was no longer required. His hair was damp at the temples. His collar. The specific sweat of someone who had been putting everything they had into something and had come to the end of the something and found themselves still standing but only barely.Kyx was beside him.She had landed cleaner, the controlled stop of someone whose body did not waste motion even when things had gone sideways, but her breath was off too. The small tells of it. The way her

She was just, present. Completely, entirely, densely present, the way certain things are present in a room and the room rearranges itself slightly around them without anyone deciding that it should. She looked at Eren."Now, now." She said. Her voice was pleasant. Genuinely pleasant, the kind that is not constructed but simply is, the tone of something that is comfortable in its circumstances."Little bug." Her eyes moved over him, not a quick scan, a proper look, the unhurried inventory of someone who finds what they are looking at interesting. "I could smell your bloodlust from the other side of the forest." She tilted her head. "That is a specific thing, you know. Most people who are about to do something violent smell of adrenaline and nerves and the particular anxiety of someone who doesn't know how it ends." She looked at his eyes. At the yellow. "You just smell of the decision. Clean. No fear in it at all." A small pause. "I find that genuinely remarkable."Eren looked
