The Grand Master stood completely still. His eyes were fixed forward, and whatever he was feeling as the incantation built was not visible on his face because he had decided it was not going to be visible on his face, the specific composed stillness of someone who had been through a great many things and had developed considerable capacity for absorbing them quietly.……..Kyx had been watching the entire thing with the focused attention of someone trying to understand something and finding that understanding kept arriving partially, that each piece led to the edge of the next piece rather than to a complete picture."What is he doing?" She said.Gull was already in motion, the specific small, self-satisfied motion of a man who had been waiting for someone to ask exactly that question and had spent the intervening time preparing an answer that was perhaps slightly more elaborate than the situation strictly required."What we're looking at." He said, lowering his voice to the specific

One syllable, low, carrying an alien weight in its consonants that recalled the incantation from minutes before, ancient and heavy, a sound shaped by a mouth that had never grown up speaking anything currently living, and every torch along the walls dimmed by a fraction as it passed through the air, as though the room itself had flinched.……..Dero's response came instantly. She raised one hand, fingers spread, and the air in front of her tore open. Not open. Tore. The way fabric gives way when tension finally exceeds what the weave can hold, a jagged, swirling wound of grey flame spreading outward from a single point, widening, stabilizing, until it stood taller than any of them and wider than the doorway it framed, a portal that showed nothing of what waited on the other side of it so much as it showed the absence of a side at all, a grey churn that hurt slightly to look at directly. The heat coming off it was different from Loki's, colder somehow despite the flame, a heat that pull

She crossed the floor without hurrying, the specific unhurried pace of someone who had never once needed to move quickly to arrive exactly when they intended to, her boots striking the stone in a rhythm that carried through the silence with a clarity the shouting a moment ago had never allowed for.She reached the head of the chamber and turned to face the assembled clan leaders."Thank you."She said."For gathering on such short notice."Her voice was not loud. It didn't need to be. It arrived in the specific register of something accustomed to being heard the first time, every word landing in a room that had already given her its complete attention before she'd asked for it.She let a moment pass."As you all know."She continued."The Flame Beasts are on the rise. Moving to destroy our world once more."A ripple went through the seated leaders, murmurs held just below the surface, restrained by the specific discipline of people who understood, on some level, that this was not the

The main thoroughfare of the Capital was exactly what it always was on a clear afternoon.Loud. Crowded. The specific productive chaos of a city going about its business with the comfortable confidence of people who trusted that tomorrow would resemble today. Vendors called out prices from behind stalls piled with everything from flame-treated cloth to cured meat to the small ornamental conduit stones that middle-income households used for light. Two neighbors stood blocking the natural flow of foot traffic, deep in the kind of conversation that had started as a quick greeting and expanded into a full accounting of everything that had happened to both families in the last two weeks. A group of children chased each other through the gaps between adult legs, apparently playing a game that had no visible rules and required significant yelling. The smell of spiced bread from a bakery three stalls to the left. The distant sound of a hammer from somewhere in the craftsman's quarter. The wa

The voice came from inside Gabimaru's skull. Not loud, Loki's telepathic commands never were, which somehow made them worse than shouting would have been. They arrived with the specific weight of something that didn't need volume to communicate authority, the way a cold room communicated cold without announcing it.‘’Stand down.’’Two words. And underneath the two words, the full implication of them, the cover they were maintaining, the population surrounding them on all sides, the precise and total disaster that would follow if Gabimaru's hand completed its descent.‘’Apologize. Move on.’’Gabimaru's hand stopped. The specific visible effort of it, the fingers stopping mid-drop, not quickly, with the gradual deliberateness of someone physically overriding a response that had already left the station. He held the position for one second. Two. Then the hand came up, empty, and his spine straightened, and he turned to face the man fully."I apologize." Gabimaru said.It came out rigid.
