CHAPTER SIXTY ONE
Marie-Stella listened to the new Sales Manager as he pitched his idea.Okay, that was an outright lie.She wasn't listening. Not one bit. She'd found it was easier to just nod every now and then to make people think she was listening. Then on rare moments, she'd smile to crown it all. The smile was the final seasoning in the pot. It made the speaker feel good about themselves. Made them feel acknowledged. But at this point she wasn't even seeing the person in front of her. Her Asperger's was kicking in. She'd long since stopped taking any of those crappy medications. They tasted like biscuits made from dried up guano."They're good for you," said her personal Doctor; "You need to stop neglecting your health," said her personal health consultant. "You're skipping out on your meds again, aren’t you?" said her personal Therapist in that motherly tone she hated. Each had 'personal' attached to their titles yet they barely understood herShe sighed as she adjusted the Air Conditioner setti
CHAPTER SIXTY TWO
DOOM DOOM DOOMThe woman's feet pounded against the iron floor as she moved. With sweat-soaked hair and clenched teeth she ran desperately up the narrow, metal runway. And her panting breaths echoed off the cold walls as she progressed through the metallic corridor leading to the open cargo hold. She was several altitudes above the ground, and her mind seemed insistent on reminding her of that. She'd always hated heights. Meanwhile her surroundings were a blur of shadow and metal, lit intermittently by faint red emergency lights.Soon the woman's ears picked up the distant shouts of men behind her. Their voices mixed with the sharp barks of dogs also in pursuit. 'Who brings Dogs on a plane?' she thought as she added this experience to the many reasons why she'd never like dogs, or animals in general. These weren't average dogs though. She leaped, just in time to avoid getting mauled by one of the attack dogs. Taking advantage of her airborne position, she executed a low round house
CHAPTER SIXTY THREE
October arrived cold and gray.Carter woke at 5 AM, as he had every morning for the past six months. His body moved through the familiar routine automatically: stretch, dress, check Protocol status, review training objectives. The motions were practiced to the level of muscle memory, requiring minimal conscious thought. His phone displayed seventeen messages accumulated overnight. Most were from team members coordinating training schedules. One was from Elena, containing three photos of Sparky Grace wearing a tiny Halloween costume. One was from an unknown number.Carter opened the unknown message first."Owen Grace. We need to talk about your sister's husband. Marcus Hayes has been located in Atlantic City. His gambling debts exceed two hundred thousand dollars. He is currently in custody of individuals who do not appreciate his failure to repay borrowed funds. The Grace family is aware of this situation. You should be aware as well. Reginald."Carter stared at the message.Marcus. E
CHAPTER SIXTY FOUR
Friday morning came too soon. Adrian woke at 5:30 AM after sleeping maybe ninety minutes. His head was pounding before he even opened his eyes. He lay in bed, staring at the water-stained ceiling, and mentally calculated his options. $78.68 in the bank. $7,200 due today for Maya's care. $10,000 due Wednesday for the loan sharks. $65 for Lily's field trip. The math didn't work. No matter how he arranged it, subtracted it, borrowed from one to pay another, the math simply didn't work. His phone buzzed. A text from Mrs. Lewinsky: "Mr. Wu, this is your final reminder. Payment by 5 PM today or we begin the transfer process." Adrian wanted to throw the phone across the room. Instead, he got up and went through his morning routine like a zombie. Shower. Shave. Dress. Try to look like a person instead of a corpse. Lily was still asleep when he left. He'd already arranged for her to go to Thomas's after school. Thomas would give her dinner and Adrian would pick her up later. The dri
CHAPTER SIXTY FIVE
An hour later, the guards arrived to escort them from their cell. Michael and Korvich walked through the facility corridors in tense silence, both preparing for what they knew would be a crucial moment in their captivity. They were taken not to Ava's laboratory, but to a different section of Level Two that Michael had not seen before. The corridors here were wider, with reinforced walls and additional security checkpoints. Clearly, this was where Octavian conducted more sensitive operations. They were brought into a large conference room dominated by a massive holographic display showing real-time data feeds from around the world. Financial markets, military communications, transportation networks—everything was being monitored and analyzed by Nexus systems. Octavian was standing at the center of the room, studying the displays with a satisfied look on his face. He turned when they entered, his expression turning cold. “Good morning,” Octavian said. “I hope you both had time to re

January brought new challenges. The Inter-Academy Competition Committee announced significant format changes for the upcoming year. Individual combat trials would be weighted more heavily in overall scoring. Team tactical operations would include randomized environmental hazards. The final challenge would be restructured as a multi-day endurance event rather than a single scenario.Victor received the announcement with characteristic composure. "Vanguard's individual combat superiority becomes more valuable. Our team coordination advantage becomes less valuable. This format shift disadvantages us significantly."He paused. "We must adapt."The team spent January redesigning their training protocols. Individual combat drills were extended and intensified. Tactical coordination exercises were compressed to accommodate additional combat practice. Victor personally supervised each team member's development, identifying deficiencies and prescribing corrective actions with obsessive precisi

Ava lay on a metal examination table in the center of the sterile white laboratory. Parts of her outer casing had been carefully removed, exposing internal circuitry and processing units that pulsed with faint light. Dozens of cables ran from her systems to monitoring equipment that beeped and flashed with streams of data. She looked like a patient on an operating table, except the surgeons had been studying her mind instead of her body. "Ava!" Michael rushed to her side, his heart breaking at the sight of her motionless form. Her eyes were closed, but LED indicators on her core systems still glowed faintly blue and green. She was alive, but barely. Several tubes and cables had been attached to her body, and her beautiful face was pale and still. "What have they done to her?" Michael asked, his voice raw with pain. Professor Nakamura approached the table carefully, his eyes taking in the complex array of connections and monitoring devices. "They have removed several memory cores a
CHAPTER SIXTY EIGHT
Michael's legs felt like jelly as he and Alexis walked out of the abandoned restaurant. The cool evening air hit his face, and he realized he'd been holding his breath for what felt like hours. Behind them, the sound of chairs scraping and voices faded into the distance. "Jesus Christ," Michael muttered, running a hand through his hair. "I can't believe that actually worked." Alexis walked beside him, her heels clicking against the cracked pavement. She kept glancing back at the restaurant, as if expecting armed men to come running after them. "Your hands are shaking," she said, noticing his trembling fingers as he tried to light a cigarette. "Yeah, well, I just negotiated with two gang leaders who could have killed us both," Michael said. "I'm allowed to shake a little." They walked in silence for a few blocks, both processing what had just happened. The street lamps cast long shadows, and every sound made Michael's head snap around. A car door slamming. A dog barking. The di

April marked one full year since Carter Hayes had arrived at Star Academy. He woke on the anniversary date at 5 AM, as always. His body moved through the familiar routine while his mind processed the significance of the date. One year since he had undergone facial surgery and Protocol installation. One year since he had begun his desperate impersonation of a broken heir's discarded identity. One year since Carter Hayes had begun his transformation into Owen Grace. His phone displayed the expected accumulation of messages. Team training schedules. Elena's daily photo of Sparky Grace. Reginald's quarterly progress assessment request. And a message from an unknown number that made Carter's heart rate spike."I heard about your deal with my parents. Sixteen years as me. That's a long time to wear someone else's face." A pause. "I hope you're using it better than I did. Owen."Carter stared at the message. Owen Grace. The real Owen Grace. Contacting him after months of silence. He typed hi

June brought heat and the annual Grace family gala.Carter had received the invitation with his other correspondence: a formal, embossed card requesting the presence of Mr. Owen Alexander Grace at the Grace Family Foundation's summer benefit. Black tie required. RSVP by May 30.He had not RSVP'd.Reginald's follow-up message was characteristically direct: "Your attendance at the gala is required. The Grace family's strategic partners expect to meet you personally. Your absence would be noted and interpreted negatively."Carter responded: "I'm not Owen Grace. I'm impersonating him. Public events increase exposure and detection risk.""Your impersonation is now legally reinforced by formal identity transfer. You are Owen Grace for all public and private purposes. Detection risk is minimal." A pause. "Formal attire will be provided. Transportation will be arranged. Your attendance is non-negotiable."Carter attended the gala. The venue was a historic hotel ballroom, transformed for the e
