Chapter 051: Voices Through Wires
For a split second, the phone vibrated in Derrick's hand like a living thing, its insistence cutting through the tight air in the room. He had turned off his phone's ability to detect the IDs of callers for the sake of the mission, so he couldn't tell who was calling him. "Hello," he finally said as he picked and brought the phone to his ear. Before a word could be spoken, Dominic was already moving. He snapped his fingers just once, and a technician among the armed men was already moving, lifting a compact recording unit from a distant table. Cables were connected in practiced movement, and three screens blinked to life. Waveforms danced as the call was patched through, a location tracking software spinning up in the background. Everything was set. "Derrick Morgan," Derrick said evenly, his gaze flicking to Dominic for the briefest moment. "Derrick," Ivy's voice said from the other side. The equipment sent up by the technician had amplified the sound, making everyone present i
Chapter 052: War of Strategy
"Damn it," Derrick muttered as he pulled the phone away from his ear. The words scraped out of him like grit dragged across steel. He straightened slowly, rolling his shoulders once. Then he glanced at the city model that spread across the central table. "I'm split," he said at last. "Ivy's currently exposed, and Dora's compromised. Either direction costs something." Dominic was pacing in a slow, deliberate arc, hands clasped behind his back. "This surely is bait," he said as he stopped pacing and looked up at Derrick. "I mean...why would they give her a phone to call you?" "And I don't recall giving her my number," Derrick replied in a low voice. He drew in a deep breath through his nose, holding it for a count that steadied him, then he realised it as he crossed the room toward the technician. The glow of multiple screens painted sharp lines across the man's face. Derrick stopped at his shoulder and looked into the screens. "Zoom in on her last word," he ordered quietly. "Sl
Chapter 053: Fear of the Unknown
Pa Lorenzo had listened to her without interrupting. "My wife has come to see me with worse than migraines," he'd said after she was done with the lie. A crease formed between his brows as he shook his head once. Then his eyes narrowed, as though he were trying to recall something. "That night," he murmured. "There was a sound, then a scream. Or–no, maybe I'm mixing it up." Ivy had leaned forward before his thoughts could finish forming. "Grandpa," she'd said, keeping her voice warm and grounded. "Thinking like this won't help you right now. You need rest–a lot of it. Let the doctors do their job." He'd sighed, then let his head sink back into the pillow. "She'll come," Ivy added quickly. I promise you that.""How is the Lorenzo Group? A board meeting–""Grandpa," she cut in, rubbing his shoulder. "Have some rest please. We'll talk about business later."He had studied her for a long moment, then his eyes closed. The conversation ended there. She had left the room, and didn't
Chapter 054: Lines of Protection
"Oh my God...Derrick," Ivy whispered, barely aware she was speaking aloud. "Derrick..." The road bent gently to the left, her car following it. But she was already deep in thought. Vincent Maguire had taken Dora, taken her grandmother. Now he'd come for her too. She looked up, realising that she was getting closer to the Lorenzo mansion. Relief flared–then died almost quickly. I can't lead them there, she thought. The bloody image of her parents caught in a close fire made her stomach clench, and she knew the men wouldn't stop until they got her. So, she slowed slightly, her mind racing desperately. What was she going to do? Her phone still lay on the floor by the passenger seat, and she knew the call hadn't disconnected. So, a reckless idea took shape in her head. Without thinking twice, her trembling hand reached down, fingers brushing the phone before she lifted it back to her ear. Her heart slammed so loudly she wondered if the voice on the other end could hear it. "Loo
Chapter 055: Countdown
Dora watched as another fifty minutes slid into the digital timer, the digits settling into a steady rhythm. The numbers were no longer rushing. It had become a normal counter, as though the device was giving them all the time in the world. Moses sagged back against one of the pillars he was chained too, breath rasping in and out of him. "You–you sure made the right decision," he said, forcing the words out between gulps of air. His voice dropped lower than a whisper. "Goddammit. I need some water." Dora didn't respond. Her thoughts failed to line up properly after the call. They scattered, bumping into each other, and circling the same fear over and over.Vincent believed Derrick would come to her rescue. And when he did, the bomb would go off, killing them all. "Good girl." Dora's head snapped up just as she heard Vincent's voice, and this time, she saw him. He had appeared at the far end of the room, his smoking pipe between his lips, and flanked by armed men. "You beast!" D
Chapter 056: Derrick Maguire?
"What the hell are you doing?" Moses yelled sharply in a whisper. "Dora! We need to get the freaking hell out of here!" Dora barely heard him. Her pulse roared loudly in her ears, and shadows seemed to bend at the edges of her vision. "Dora," Derrick quietly called from the other end of the line. "Slow down. Take a breath." Dora swallowed hard instead. "Don't come," she rasped. "Please. It's a freaking trap. He wants you here." "We know that." His calm seemed to settle her fears, and she wished that he'd just keep on talking. "Where's Ma Lorenzo?" he asked, voice tightening only slightly. "Is she with you there?" Dora's eye scanned the space around her, as if she half expected the old woman to just materialize. "No she isn't. I–I've got no idea where she is." She paused, then added. "Only Moses Lorenzo is here with me. Look Derrick, you have to stay away. Vincent wired this place. He–he knows you'll come." "I guess that's too late," Derrick said in an even calmer voice. Dor
Chapter 057: Two Captains
Vincent gave off a low chuckle, as though they stood in an ordinary drawing room instead of a bomb plant. "Well, what does it matter?" he asked mildly. "You'll be dead in a while anyway." Derrick's eyes never left him. He possessed a stillness that seemed to press back against the tension in the room. It was the kind of stillness Vincent knew was associated with men who did not bluff. Vincent's smile gradually thinned, and he shrugged one shoulder. "Fine." Then he lifted his hand and clicked his fingers. Immediately, a section of the wall to their left groaned and split apart. A large screen slid out smoothly from it's concealed compartment, the mechanism humming to life. Static flickered only once, then the image sharpened. Derrick turned to the screen, noting the familiar lonely street on display. He saw himself standing there too, and he instantly remembered the moment. Vincent's men were all around him, and he watched himself duck, driving an elbow into a man's ribs. He piv
Chapter 058: Betrayal
"Screw you!" the man with the gun barked, pointing the weapon away from Dora and against Derrick. Another man lifted his rifle and did the same. Just then, gunfire erupted from the entrance, and the man aiming at Derrick jerked violently as bullets tore into his chest. He dropped without finishing the trigger pull. "Arrgh!" The second man roared as he staggered backward, shock flashing across his face before he collapsed. More shots followed. They were precise, causing all of Vincent's men to fall in succession. Without hesitation, Derrick pivoted and added fire to the onslaughts–two clean shots to neutralize the last standing gunman that attempted to shoot back. Smoke curled in the air once more, Dominic stepping fully into view. He moved through the fallen bodies, eyes scanning until he found Derrick."That was a close one, sir." Derrick wiped blood from his lips with the back of his hand. "Yeah. But it was perfect. Just as planned." Dominic nodded once. Then he quickly glanc
Chapter 059: The Father's Hand
Shock wasn't a feeling that came easily to Derrick, but Vincent's voice struck him like a physical blow. His jaw tightened, the muscles along his cheek twisting. They turned slowly to see Vincent standing a few yards away, the dim light sharpening the edges of his smile. At least a dozen armed men fanned out behind him in a semicircle. A man carried Ma Lorenzo in his arms, her silver hair hanging loose against the dark sleeve of his coat. Her body was limp but not bloodied. "Fuck," Dominic breathed. The board had just slipped. "Right about time, sir," Dennis said as he walked away, crossing the distance until he stood beside Vincent and his men. "Smart ass, aren't you?" Vincent said lightly, leveling his gun at Derrick's chest. "Guess you didn't figure that I own the chessboard." "On your damn knees," one of Vincent's men said just then. "All of you!" Without looking at each other, Derrick and Dominic did as instructed. "Let her go," Derrick said, eyes fixed on Vincent. "For r
Chapter 060: The Man Behind the Board
Vincent's hand dropped almost immediately. The gun lowered, making the phone in Dominic's grasp irrelevant. Vincent turned toward the old man, fury burning sharp in his eyes. "Will you keep repeating threats with my own men?" he asked, voice tight with humiliation he tried to restrain. The old man regarded him the way one might regard a tool that had dulled too quickly."Screw you all," Vincent muttered beneath his voice, lips curling in disgust. He turned sharply and brushed past the armed men. As he walked, he struck one in the shoulder, another across the chest. The old man watched him go and gave a faint shake of his head. Then he turned back to Derrick."You made the right choice, sir," Dominic said without meeting the man's gaze. For a long moment, the man said nothing. He kept an expressionless face, and Derrick held his gaze without flinching. But he still felt that unsettling flicker of familiarity brushing the edges of his memory. The old man's attention finally shifted t
