CHAPTER FORTY-ONE
The doors of kings corporation slide open, and efore anyone had even spoken the words, Sophia had a feeling. The information hadn't all come to her at once but as disparate pieces. Half-finished sentences cut short the second she walked into a room, whispered conversations falling silent the second she turned around, the subtle shift of eyes looking away as soon as her name had been mentioned in relation to the investor dinner.By the time she reached the main floor of King's Corporation, there was already a definite slant in the air. It wasn't aggressive or obvious, merely...off, like a room where all the furniture has been rearranged without a word. She stood still, just by the reception desk. The secretary's eyes met hers and a quick flash lit up in them, too immediate for a casual glance. Sophia knew that she didn't have to say anything immediately. Rarely did she in these situations where everything required more than a simple response. Before she could even make a sound though
CHAPTER FORTY-TWO
Sophia didn't move from the corridor until the elevator doors had finally closed. The silence that followed them was heavier than the conversation that preceded them. All around her, the familiar murmur of an office the hushed ring of a telephone, the soft whirring of a printer, the steady scuff of passing staff continued, but she remained frozen as though the floor beneath her had abruptly tilted.By the time the secretary returned, no one could possibly notice it.She had a slender folder in her hand. Nothing about the cover suggested any particular importance, just a generic, nondescript case indistinguishable from a thousand others which made their way through corporate headquarters on a daily basis. But her grip on it a little too firm,Sophia turned just before the secretary could speak. The secretary extended the folder with a small, competent dip of her head. " Here is the file ma'am."Sophia didn't take it immediately. Her fingers closed around the cover, deliberate and slow
CHAPTER FORTY-THREE
Lara gave him no answer at first. Her silence was a full one, not a hollow one, brimming with everything Lara’s life contained which she had desperately kept from her lips until now. When Lara did speak, the tone was significantly deeper. "We hit a bit of legal trouble," she stated blandly. Ansel did not move at her answer but his eyes widened nearly to the breaking point and his jaw tensed the one minute, almost imperceptible tell that for the few people who knew him well enough, he already understood what she implied. "Legal problems," he whispered, his own voice barely audible. Lara nodded. "After all of that... After the restructuring... There wasn't much left of the company to operate, it became bankrupt, people came knocking down the doors, internal claims... The whole nine yards," she said and stopped. "It wasn't just business failing. It was everything failing." Ansel looked away from her as if to control the tide of his emotions by denying them full contact with h
CHAPTER FORTY FOUR
The restaurant was tucked away down a side street, one of those places that look as if they wouldn't be expensive until you go in there, then everything from the lighting to the quiet has been calculated to be more than you and I will earn between us this month. Amber lights gleamed off tables with dark, highly polished wood; and the gentle murmur of a jazz tune no one seemed to be listening to mingled with the soft sound of cutlery being placed very carefully onto plates.Alice was perched on the edge of her chair at the table, hands pressed together in front of her holding a glass of still water. Her eyes flicked towards the door like she was waiting for regret itself to stroll in and reverse what she'd already done just by saying it aloud.Sophia entered like a storm dressed in heels. She didn't storm in-she never did. She swept in like a controlled flood, a presence that could silence a room without even trying to; the hushed conversations at the table opposite her ceased without
CHAPTER FORTY -FIVE
Lara entered her office, they were immediately there on her desk, the transfer papers stacked with an unnervingly perfect precision that stopped her cold in her tracks and made the entire air in the room seem to shift the moment she had walked in the door. She stood there, holding the cooling mug of coffee in her hand, and allowed her gaze to fall upon the neatly formed pile of documents in the center of her desk, designed to consume her morning before she’d had a chance to get a single sip of coffee. Outside her office continued its languid dance around her employees drifting in, bleary and slow-eyed, armed with a mug and the faintest of yawns. They would pass in and out through the glass panels separating the departments, a subdued murmur of conversations punctuated by the occasional ping of an email notification and the steady, relentless clicking of keyboards, punctuated with the whirring of the printers. She could hear all of it faintly, as if she was on the other side of a sh
CHAPTER FORTY -SIX
Ansel's office was still deep in night, while the rest of the building had long since given in to morning light. The only thing that bled onto the window panes was the distant glow of the city-flecks of headlights on wet asphalt, a skyline silently pushing back against the imminence of rain under a sky yet to shed its tears. The air inside the room, however, was too still. It felt expectant, even judgmental, holding its breath for a decision Ansel had been delaying far longer than he cared to count. The transfer file sat exactly where he'd placed it hours ago, untouched, the crisp corporate logo at its top catching the weak, fluorescent light over the slick surface of his desk, making it appear impossibly pure given the weight it now possessed. He hadn't so much as nudged it. Not when he’d just finished scrounging through contracts that had demanded an urgent rubber stamp. Not when a backlog of emails had built up that would ordinarily trigger a flurry of dictated memos filled with
CHAPTER FORTY -SEVEN
The morning arrived a little quiet at King’s Corporation, as if even the sun knew to bow in the face of the tangible tension. Lara was already slumped behind her desk when she’d need to be, fingers around the grip of a pen that had seen no action for a solid several minutes and her gaze locked somewhere beyond the edge of the report that had ceased to occupy her desk, but not her thoughts. “Leave it open.” The words had followed her through the night, a disembodied echo of trespass that wouldn’t quite leave her, slinking into the margins of her thoughts whenever she’d try to fix them elsewhere, appearing between breaths like something Ansel had inadvertently lodged in her very being. She inhaled deeply and managed to coax her focus back to the screen in front of her, but the reports bled together, numbers blurring to gibberish as her thoughts kept returning to the same unanswered question. Was the transfer as straightforward as it appeared? A straightforward business decision to s
CHAPTER FORTY -EIGHT
Ansel pushed himself away from his desk. "You don't normally involve yourself with staff members on that level." "I was acting as your future wife." she declared evenly. The tension between them thickened asAnsel's eyes narrowed. "This isn't personal." Sophia emitted a short laugh. "It became personal the moment you stopped signing that file." There was a brief pause between them before she continued, "You're stuck in neutral because of her." "That's not true,"Ansel countered almost immediately, though without conviction.Sophia recognized the falter instantly, of course she did. "You're trying to protect her," she continued in measured tones, "Not as CEO. As something else entirely." Ansel gave no response, and the silence between them was more potent than any denial. Sophia moved closer. "You're jeopardizing the company over an emotion you won't acknowledge." "I am making a business decision." he said coldly. "No." she replied simply, "You are not." As the silence between t
CHAPTER FORTY -NINE
Sophia returned home, the imposing doors of Blake estate swung shut behind her, heavy with the finality that shut out a world she hadn’t yet mastered. Her heels click-clacked a slow, irregular beat on the polished marble as she traversed the vast foyer, her expression as tight as it could be-too tight. Her controlled composure was cracking in ways she couldn’t afford to see just yet. The house shimmered with an almost eager warmth, ready to embrace and coddle. The crystal in the chandeliers splattered broken light across surfaces; art, portraits of the ancestors, hung stoic and expectant on the walls. Tonight none of it seemed to matter to her. She swept past the servants-a hurried hello, a muttered thank you, their practiced polite greeting ignored as she made her way toward the living room, where her father was seated. Mr. Blake sat beside a floor-to-ceiling glass window, the newspaper open, but half-read, lying loosely in his lap. He looked up as she entered, his languid gaze s
CHAPTER FIFTY
The executive floor was as hushed in the quiet of morning as Ansel entered his office. It was only 7:30 AM, but no rush was yet audible within the building. The elevators were silent. No footsteps echoed in the corridors. In the darkness visible through the glass windows of adjacent offices, no one as of yet occupied desks pending the deluge of assistants, managers, and executives to come, to jump-start another grueling workweek. Ansel usually relished these few quiet minutes. They allowed him space for his thoughts. This morning, he most fervently wanted to avoid it. He tightened his hold on the leather briefcase he'd been carrying, placed it on his desk, and slid into the chair behind it. He glanced through the floor-to-ceiling windows out at the sprawled city. A pale gold had smeared itself across the buildings; sunlight glinted off their tops, while ribbons of traffic snaked toward the city center like life-blood. The usual panorama. It should have been comforting, predictab
