Alex was surprised when Derek did not leave immediately. Instead, he came back to see him.“Congratulations, Derek. But why did you come back?” he asked curiously.“Well, I just felt like waiting for your performance so we can go together. Maybe have dinner or something. What’s your number?”“Number forty,” Alex replied. He was confident he would be called for screening today, even if it would be late.Derek seemed to know what he was thinking and casually hit him on the back.“Don’t worry, buddy. It’s not as if I have any work to do. I’ll stick around with you,” he assured him. “Anyway, where do you come from?” he asked.“Saint city,” Alex replied.“Saint city!” Derek exclaimed. “That place is far. Are you sure you can go today? Why don’t you come over and crash at my place after this, then go tomorrow?” he suggested.“No.” Alex shook his head. “It’s not really far. I just have to take the train, and I’ll be there soon,” he said, turning him down gently. He barely knew Derek anyway a

Finally, Alex strung the last note. Without realizing it, the judges had their eyes shut tight throughout his performance.“Eh, are you done?” Bruce asked in surprise when he realized Alex had stopped.“Yes. The one minute is over,” Alex replied.“Ehnm.” The first female judge cleared her throat. “I will be honest with you. This song, by itself, is a masterpiece. If you choose songwriting and composing as your career, you will make it.” She paused.Alex nodded. At least something positive. Even though he had not heard the rest, he believed it would also be positive. It seemed possible that he might get a pass, judging by how impressed she appeared.“But…” she continued. “The issue is your singing. You have nice control and all that, but your singing is bad. It is not up to a superstar standard, not even close. And it is all because of your voice. It has the ability to resonate with people and pull them into your storytelling, but it is too crude and unrefined.“You need to work hard o

After Alex left, the two of them fell silent. A moment later, the first female judge disconnected her microphone and spoke.“What kind of judgment did you all give today? Especially you, Bruce. Cynthia is still young, so it’s understandable if she gets sentimental about certain things, but you are well experienced.I never imagined you could give such an amateur judgment.”Bruce smiled and switched off his own microphone before responding.“You just said it yourself that I’m experienced, right?” he said, a faint smile tugging at his lips.“Yes. You’ve been in the industry for many years and worked with top talents. I expected far more from you, especially since you’ve been rigid with all your past judgments until now,” she replied, nodding.“Good. I judged him based on my experience with many top artists, and I know exactly what I see in him. Veronica, between you and me, who do you think has more authority when it comes to music? You’re only sitting here because of your connections.

Alex found himself moving with the flow. Mandy was a very bold girl, and she made him feel the heat of the moment. Eventually, she took him to her house nearby.“Your home looks nice,” he commented as he carefully set his guitar down. She did not give him a chance to continue admiring it and instead planted a kiss on his lips. It was a good thing this was not this world’s Alex’s first kiss.Mandy’s right hand roamed over his body. She squeezed his biceps, hardened by the harsh training he had been subjected to these days, then slid over his chest and brushed against his nipples.Soon, she yanked off his upper cloth and tossed it aside, then pulled off her own clothes completely. It was easy for her since she was wearing only a singlet and a very short skirt, with absolutely nothing underneath. As an experienced hookup girl, she never wore anything inside.Reality dawned on Alex. He was letting himself down for cheap pleasure. What happened to maintaining a solid celebrity image and di

Alex was taken aback by her extreme reaction.“Alright, I’ll go, but please, can I have my upper wear?” He could not possibly go out wearing only trousers with a guitar draped behind him. People would either think he was mad or a street drug addict.“I don’t care. Get out!” she yelled loudly, unafraid of alarming the neighbors. Not wanting more trouble, Alex decided to take his guitar and leave. He had brought this upon himself, but it was one of life’s lessons. He did not think Mandy was a lesser human for being a hookup. Not at all. He did not judge how people chose to live their lives, but he did not feel comfortable sleeping with one either. Back in his original world, he had been more disciplined than this, and no matter how simulated it was, he would never have followed Mandy back home. When he reflected on it, it seemed to have a lot to do with his new body being very young, at an age where it could be easily stimulated. It was his responsibility to bring it under control, and

Alex’s order was brought to him, tea and buns. That was all he could afford. It might have sounded strange to have tea in the evening, but people of this world did not have such rules.Tea could be drunk anytime. He sipped his tea and ate the buns while thinking about the mess he had gotten himself into today, dreading the possibility that his guitar might have been spoiled.Suddenly, he saw a police car drive in a few houses away from Mandy’s apartment. He was seated at a table outside the tea shop, facing the street, so he could see every movement clearly.“What are the police doing here this time? It’s never a good sign seeing them park on our street,” the server from the tea shop said. She was beautiful and young, her body showing she was still developing.Alex guessed she might be around his age, eighteen or nineteen. She was serving a new customer who sat directly opposite him. The girl was average-looking, her hair scattered carelessly. She did not seem to care about her appear

Alex didn’t understand what the man meant by calling him a very lucky man, or what that had to do with what had happened. Still, he didn’t interrupt. He waited patiently. The man paused on purpose, letting the silence stretch and tension build, before continuing.“The police aren’t here for the scar faced man. They came for Mandy. The scar faced man was just collateral.”“What? They came for Mandy? How is that even possible? What did she do?” Alex asked, stunned.“Well, she got involved with a new drug substance in the city. It was her friend Keisha’s fault. There’s this substance that recently showed up on the streets. Keisha, Mandy’s best friend, got connected to the owner and started hawking it for them.“The police rarely search women, so hawking the substance is easier and less risky. Before that, she was in the same business as Mandy, but she quit after she started making money.“She tried many times to convince Mandy to join her, but Mandy always insisted she didn’t want anythi

“What do you want?” he asked warily. “I don’t have anything with me. No cash.”The man did not slow down. As he drew closer, Alex could see his full frame clearly. He was not taller than Alex, but he was bulkier, thicker through the shoulders, and looked much older.“What do you want?” Alex repeated, his voice tighter now.The man reached to his belt, pulled out a dagger, and pointed it straight at him.“Give me everything you have,” he said, his voice low and hoarse.“Please, I don’t have anything on me. Just let me go, please,” Alex said, tugging at his pockets and turning out the inner lining to prove he had no money. The robber narrowed his eyes.“What’s that on your back? Give it to me,” he said coldly.“No way.” Alex stepped back. There was no chance he would ever give up his guitar.(Ding! First thing Alex thought of was to pin him down, so he immediately wrapped his arm around the man’s neck and grappled him tightly, trying to choke him out.He didn’t know any grappling techniques. He was only hoping his raw strength might be useful in this situation, and for once, it was.Suddenly, the man tried to bite him. Alex released his grip instinctively and jerked back to avoid the bite, but that brief hesitation gave the robber an opening to roll away. The robber tried to rise, and Alex moved with him, but the man was surprisingly a little slower. Perhaps it was because Alex had choked him so hard and the robber was still struggling to catch his breath.Alex didn’t stand around to find out. He kicked out hard and fast, putting his full strength behind it, aiming straight for the robber’s head. The man was still bent over and couldn’t dodge in time. The kick landed cleanly. The robber fell backward and did not rise again.Alex suddenly felt as if all the strength had been drai

After the treatment, the landlady gave him food before he returned to his house. He did not have the strength to check his system and went straight to sleep. The next day, when he woke up and came down, the first thing he did was check his system.(Mission complete: defeat the robber and protect your guitar at all cost. Reward no 1: a random level increase. Acting level 5.Reward number two: new technique. Fighting proficiency level one added.)“Shit! Why acting?” Alex felt like crying. His Singing level was the only thing he wanted to increase. It would greatly boost his chances in the reality show Superstars Of Tomorrow. But the system was quite unreliable.(Fighting proficiency is integrating with host.)The system announced suddenly. He felt a sharp headache as new information surged into his mind. A few minutes later, the headache subsided. Information about fighting was ingrained into his mind and body. There was nothing visibly different, but Alex felt that if he fought the rob
