CHAPTER 21: RACE AGAINST TIME
Marcus reached the reinforced door first and immediately saw the problem they faced. The entrance was protected by both a keycard reader and a biometric scanner that required an authorized handprint to unlock the heavy steel barrier."Can you bypass this?" Marcus asked Montgomery while keeping his weapon trained on the passage behind them where their pursuers would emerge at any moment.Montgomery examined the security system and shook his head in disapproval. "This is military-grade equipment. I can crack a simple lock, but this would take specialized tools and at least thirty minutes that we do not have.""Then we find another way in."Marcus looked around the basement searching for alternative access points or ventilation shafts they could use. His eyes landed on a large electrical junction box mounted on the wall about twenty feet from the secure door."The control room needs power to function. If we cut the main power to this section it will trigger emergency protocols and the do
CHAPTER 22: THE ARCHITECT REVEALED
The federal safe house was a nondescript building in a quiet residential neighborhood that resembled every other house on the street. Agent Torres pulled the SUV into the garage and closed the door behind them before anyone emerged from the vehicle.Inside the house, the atmosphere was surprisingly comfortable, with modern furniture and equipment that suggested it was used regularly for protecting witnesses and assets. David was already there with his laptops set up on a dining room table and Elena sat nearby holding sleeping Leo in her arms.Elena's face flooded with relief when she saw Marcus walk through the door. "Thank God you are alive. I watched the news coverage of the explosions and I was terrified that you might have been caught in one of them."Marcus went to her and gently touched Leo's sleeping face with his fingertips. "I am okay. We stopped the explosions before more buildings could be destroyed but the cost was still too high. Too many people died tonight because of de
CHAPTER 23: SIEGE AND SURRENDER
Marcus grabbed Elena and Leo and pulled them away from the windows into the interior hallway where they would have the most protection from gunfire. Leo had woken fully now, and his eyes were wide with fear as he clung to his mother."What is happening daddy?" the boy asked in a small frightened voice."Some bad people found where we are staying, but I am going to make sure nothing happens to you or your mother. I need you to be very brave right now okay?"Leo nodded but tears were already forming in his eyes. Elena held him close and looked at Marcus with a mixture of terror and determination that showed she was ready to fight if it meant protecting their son.Torres was on her phone calling for backup from the FBI while Montgomery positioned himself at a window with a rifle he had pulled from a hidden weapons cache in the safe house. David worked frantically at his laptop trying to upload all their evidence to multiple secure servers before the attack began."How long until your FBI
CHAPTER 24: THE PROCESSING FACILITY
The Covenant soldiers threw Marcus into the back of an armored transport vehicle with enough force that he slammed against the metal wall and felt pain shoot through his already injured shoulder. His hands were still zip-tied behind his back making it impossible to brace himself as the vehicle lurched into motion. Two guards sat across from him with weapons trained on his chest ready to shoot at the first sign of resistance. Marcus studied them carefully noting their body language and equipment looking for any weakness he could exploit when the opportunity arose."Where are you taking me?" Marcus asked even though he did not expect an honest answer. One of the guards smiled coldly. "Somewhere you will never be found. The Covenant has facilities all over this country where people disappear and no one ever asks questions about what happened to them.""You really think you are on the winning side? Victoria is using you just like she uses everyone else. Once you are no longer useful to he
CHAPTER 25: : THE GENERAL'S STAND
Marcus stood outside Processing Facility Seven watching the sunrise paint the sky in shades of orange and pink while his team loaded equipment and evidence into vehicles. The beautiful morning felt wrong given everything that had happened during the dark hours before dawn.Captain Rodriguez approached with a tablet showing satellite imagery of the military base where General Stone remained barricaded. "Sir we have updated intelligence from your tech specialist. The Covenant has approximately forty men surrounding the command center where Stone is holed up. They have not breached yet because Stone threatened to detonate explosives if they tried to force entry.""How long can he hold out?""Unknown but our sources say he has been awake for over thirty hours uploading classified files and preparing defensive positions. He is running on pure determination at this point and that only lasts so long before exhaustion makes mistakes inevitable."Marcus studied the satellite images noting the
CHAPTER 26: THE FINAL GAMBIT
Marcus looked at the hard drive in General Stone's weathered hand and then at the monitors, which showed the Covenant forces preparing their assault outside. Every tactical instinct he possessed told him that Victoria would kill them all regardless of whether he surrendered the drive or not."I need five minutes to consider your offer," Marcus said into the phone."You have two minutes. After that, I give the order to breach and you all die. The clock starts now."The call ended and Marcus turned to face his team and General Stone. "She is lying. Even if we give her the drive she will kill us to eliminate witnesses. Victoria does not leave loose ends."Stone nodded in agreement. "The girl I knew twenty years ago might have kept her word, but the woman she has become cannot afford to let any of us survive. We know too much and represent too great a threat to the Covenant."Captain Rodriguez checked his ammunition and looked at Marcus. "So what is the play, sir? We fight until we are ov
CHAPTER 27: SEEDS OF DOUBT
The transport vehicle hit a pothole and Marcus felt the chains digging into his wrists as he was thrown against the metal wall. The two guards sitting across from him barely glanced up from their phones clearly bored with their assignment of watching a chained prisoner.Marcus shifted position trying to get comfortable while actually testing the strength of the chains and looking for any manufacturing defects he could exploit. The chains were of high quality and properly secured but the mounting point on the vehicle wall showed signs of rust around the bolts. His phone vibrated again in his hidden pocket, but he could not risk reaching for it with the guards watching. Whatever David was trying to tell him would have to wait until he had privacy or freedom. The vehicle slowed and turned onto a highway heading out of the city. Marcus watched through the small window as Grandview's skyline grew smaller behind them. Wherever Victoria was taking him it was not in the city limits which mean
CHAPTER 28: THE HUNTER BECOMES THE HUNTED
Marcus ran through the forest listening to the sounds of pursuit growing louder behind him with every passing minute. The dogs were getting closer and he could hear men shouting coordinates to each other as they spread out to cut off his escape routes. His military training kicked in and Marcus began looking at the terrain with tactical eyes searching for advantages he could use against his pursuers. A rocky outcrop to his left offered high ground but would leave him exposed. A creek bed ahead might mask his scent from the dogs but would slow his movement. He chose the creek and splashed through the cold water for several hundred yards before climbing out on the far bank and changing direction. The dogs would lose their trail at the water and need time to pick it up again on the other side.Marcus found a thick cluster of bushes and crawled inside to catch his breath and assess his situation. He was unarmed and exhausted with no clear destination and limited options for survival. Howe
CHAPTER 29: AFTERMATH
Marcus sat in the hospital waiting room with Torres and Montgomery while doctors worked to save Victoria's life. News played on a television mounted in the corner showing footage of FBI agents raiding Covenant properties across the country, and politicians being led away in handcuffs."The media is calling it the biggest political scandal in American history," Montgomery said while watching the screen. "Forty-seven arrests so far including three senators, a dozen federal judges, and the former head of the CIA. The whole Covenant leadership is being dismantled in real time."Torres looked exhausted but satisfied. "My office has been flooded with tips from people who worked for the Covenant, and now want to cooperate in exchange for leniency. Everyone is scrambling to be the first to turn on their associates and cut deals.""What about Thomas Hayes?" Marcus asked. "Has anyone found him yet?""He is in custody at a federal detention center receiving medical treatment for his stroke compl
CHAPTER 30: BROKEN PIECES
Marcus sat on the floor of the safe house living room building a tower out of colorful blocks with Leo while Elena watched from the couch with a soft expression on her face. The simple domestic scene felt surreal after everything they had been through over the past week."Make it taller, Daddy," Leo said excitedly as he handed Marcus another block. "I want it to reach the ceiling.""If we make it too tall it will fall over. We need a strong foundation first before we build higher."Leo considered this wisdom with the seriousness only a five-year-old could muster. "Like how you needed to catch all the bad people before we could be safe?"Marcus smiled at his son's insight. "Exactly like that. Sometimes you have to do the hard work that nobody sees before you can build the good things that everyone notices."The tower wobbled and collapsed sending blocks scattering across the floor. Leo laughed and immediately started gathering them to build again. Marcus watched his son's resilience an
