The ceremonial dinner began at the sixth hour of the evening.Forty-one chiefs. Twelve palace officials. The king's personal staff arranged along the reception hall's western wall with the practiced invisibility of people who had learned to be present without being noticed. The Drum of Sango on its carved platform at the hall's far end, lit by four directional lamps, positioned to be seen from every table — not as furniture but as statement, the centerpiece of an evening designed to confirm what the public display had begun.Adewole stood at the hall's head and looked across his assembled chiefs and understood, with the specific intelligence of a man who reads rooms accurately, that what he was looking at was a council that had not yet decided. They had come. They had dressed appropriately. They were performing the loyalty that attendance required. But underneath the performance, in the quality of their attention when they looked at the Drum — a fractional hesitation, the barest withh

The contractors worked in pairs. This was their standard methodology — one person to make the approach, one person visible at a distance to communicate that the approach was not singular, that declining it had implications beyond the immediate conversation. Professional. Efficient. The specific craft of people who had learned that violence was less effective than the credible promise of it.The first outer contact approached was a grain merchant in the northern market named Abiola. He had been supplying the Thunder network's outer distribution system for eight months, moving grain through his ordinary commercial channels to destinations that appeared on his records as legitimate bulk sales. He was careful and had been reliable and had understood, when he entered the arrangement, that what he was doing carried risk.At the second hour of the afternoon, a man sat down across from him at the merchant's usual midday tea location and said, in the tone of someone making a business observati

He came back through the western gate at the second hour of the afternoon. The return journey had taken slightly longer than the outward one — not because he had moved differently, but because the checkpoint at the forest road's city end had added a second guard post since morning, the kind of rapid defensive expansion that indicated someone in the palace's security apparatus had flagged the outer road as a priority. He had gone around it through the forest's edge, which added forty minutes and produced the specific physical cost of forty minutes of uneven ground at pace.He noticed the poster before he had cleared the western market's first row of stalls. Not the original notice — he had seen that one, knew its dimensions and its text and the reward figure that had been making outer contacts nervous. This was larger. Posted at the market's entrance column where posted things were guaranteed the most traffic, at eye level, with the specific placement of something that had been put the

Bamidele reached the drop location at first light. It was an administrative office in the palace district's records quarter — a small building that processed official documentation for twelve senior officials simultaneously, the kind of institutional node that existed in every large administrative system as a necessary but unremarkable function. Birth records, property transfers, household registrations, movement authorizations. The specific category of documentation that touched every significant name in the city at some point without anyone thinking of the documentation office itself as significant. He stood outside it for three minutes, looking at the building and the street around it and the specific quality of its ordinariness. Then he understood. The leak had not come from inside the Thunder network. The contractor's updated intelligence — the location of Taiwo's secondary meeting point — had come from here. From a cross-referencing of network-adjacent names against the official

The spiritual hunters received the suspension at the sixth hour of the evening. It came through the administrative channel — a formal document delivered by the palace's standard courier system, which was the channel that official commissions used and which the hunters were required by their operating protocol to treat as authoritative when it arrived through the correct verification sequence. Three people at the ancestral column in the western quarter, in the middle of their assessment of a resonance signature that was real but not current, received a sealed document and opened it and read it and verified its authenticity through the confirmation code that matched the one on file from their original commission. The commission was suspended pending administrative review. They were to cease operations immediately and await further instruction through official channels. The lead hunter folded the document. Looked at the column. Looked at the signature on the suspension — Yetunde's admini
