Detective For Hire
“I didn’t think anybody was around.” Faced with Duncan’s interrogation, the woman answered as such, her words echoing clearly without guilt, as if she hadn’t just been caught red-handed trying to pick Duncan’s lock and break into his house. Regarding the woman’s answer, Duncan was very surprised and also a bit confused. From what she was saying, because she thought he wasn’t around, her attempting to break into his home seemed justified, like it was her right to do so. It was like an armed robber saying it was his right to rob a bank because the vault was just sitting there, or a sex offender saying he was in the right for assaulting women because they wiggled their waist in front of him while walking. This kind of twisted logic, where a person thought they could do whatever they wanted simply because they could, was highly irregular and incredibly dangerous. Thus, Duncan confronted her logic directly by saying, “Too bad for you then, I just happened to be around and caught you i
Detective For Hire
“Tell me, who are you?” Duncan asked. “My name is Clara,” the woman answered, identifying herself. “Well then, Miss Clara, care to explain why you wanted to see me?” Duncan looked at Clara as he questioned her, his back resting calmly against the backrest of his couch while he crossed his legs, looking very relaxed and leisurely. Currently, the two of them were in Duncan’s sitting room. In the end, Duncan had finally decided to invite Clara into his home and now he was getting to know her. Regarding Duncan’s earlier question, Clara answered, “I came to you because I wanted to hire you.” Unsurprisingly, the reason Clara was here was because she wanted to hire Duncan, which he had already guessed since that was the only thing that he could possibly offer. Unperturbed, Duncan simply said, “I see…” Then he fell silent, allowing Clara to continue speaking. “The job I want to hire you for is to investigate a certain house and the person who owns it. There is something I’m looki
Urban Legend
“The house is actually a manor that sits on a 200-acre plot of private property on the outskirts of the city. It is owned by a very wealthy magnate who makes his money by collecting various rare and precious items and auctioning them off to other wealthy patrons all over the world.” “The manor serves as one of the venues where auctions are held. When an auction is scheduled to be held in the manor, a lot of valuable items will be transported to the manor weeks beforehand and be stored in a vault that’s located underground for safekeeping. That is where the item I want you to retrieve will be kept.” Clara finished speaking. Just then, having given Duncan a simple rundown of the task she wanted him to handle. Listening attentively, Duncan understood everything she said, so when she was done, he added, “I guess an auction is already scheduled to be held very soon in the manor, right?” Nodding, Clara affirmed, “That’s right. In three days, a private auction will be held at night
Special Auction
For Duncan in particular, the manor was an even more taboo location to ever be in. Although the saying that the manor was cursed was only an urban legend, Duncan couldn’t be sure about it, so just to be safe—since his curse developed, he had set a rule for himself to never step anywhere close to that manor in this life, which is all the more reason why he couldn't take this job. Remembering something, Duncan thought to himself, “When I was still in the force, I think I remember news circulating within the precinct that the previous owner had abandoned the manor and put it up for sale, but it hadn’t been bought for a while, even till after I left.” “It seems that somebody eventually ended up buying the property and is now using it to host auctions for his wealthy clients.” Thinking about the new owner of the manor, Duncan wondered what kind of items he dealt with—could they be famous paintings or ancient lost artifacts of previous kingdoms and dynasties that had been uncovered rece
Special Auction
“The answer to that is pretty simple,” Clara began answering. “I told you the auction follows a treasure hunting system, and definitely the information about the items for auction are the clues for the hunt. But each piece of information is only one of many clues that are sealed away and cannot be accessed until every information in the same category is gathered by someone. So even if you have one piece of the clue, you won’t know the item it corresponds to until you’ve gathered the rest of the pieces together.” “I see—” Duncan was finally getting the full picture of how the auction operated. It was simple enough to understand—the information about an item is scattered around waiting for people to collect them. But these scattered pieces of information were sealed away using some method to prevent people from learning what they were, and another clue is provided that will guide you to locating the other pieces of information about that particular item. Provided that every piec

For a moment, Duncan hesitated. Like he thought before, all of this was very interesting and Duncan wanted to know more, so he was definitely tempted to accept on impulse. But in the end, reason overcame Duncan’s impulse and he resolutely declined the job once again. “Sorry lady, but I’m not interested. If that’s all, you can see yourself out.” Duncan’s rejection was final and that was supposed to be the end of the discussion, but despite his signal for Clara to leave his home, she continued remaining seated where she was, showing no indication of wanting to leave. Seeing this, Duncan frowned and asked, “Is there something else?” Clara nodded her head, answering, “There is, yes.” “What is it? Spit it out quickly if you have anything else to say—I’ve got things to do.” Duncan was already getting impatient. It took a lot of effort for him not to forcefully see Clara out, but he still urged her to say what she wanted to say so he could go on with his day. But despite Duncan’s
Blessed Object
Somebody once said, “The world exists in cycles of two entwining forces revolving around each other in an eternal ballad of opposition and balance.” The two forces this person talked about in his quote were the forces of chaos and order. They were abstract forces with no real physical presence that could be manifested in the world. That is because these forces embody everything and could be observed simply by witnessing the very world around you. Order manifested in rules, and it is what caused all things to conform to certain predictable patterns, following clearly defined principles. Chaos, on the other hand, is also manifested in the same rules, but it transforms the predictable into the unpredictable and introduces new elements of uncertainty into its underlying principles. In essence, order is the embodiment of destiny and fate, while chaos is the embodiment of growth and change. When translated into the real world, the power of order allows one to seize a certain fixed pa

“What is the meaning of this?” Clara repeated. “It’s obvious, isn’t it… I’m giving you the exact things you’ve been seeking for a very long time. You didn’t really think I would come to you without making a few investigations of my own, did you?” “I had to make sure you would agree to take this job, so I pulled all the necessary stops to do so.” Duncan sat there motionless as Clara explained herself; meanwhile, his impression of her refreshed itself. Professional, collected, wealthy… these were Duncan’s earlier impressions of Clara based on the brief interaction they’d just had. But now, Duncan had added two more words that could be used to describe her: mysterious and scheming. Duncan had to admit that apart from using these words to describe Clara based on their short interaction just now, he didn’t know anything else about her. But it seemed that Clara knew a whole lot about Duncan and what goes on in his life, which is why she appeared very mysterious and full of schemes t
Blessed Object
Tempted… that’s how Duncan was feeling right now. Everything else aside, the blessed object that Clara was offering him as payment for his services was already enough for Duncan to change his earlier decision of refusing the job. That is because a blessed artifact—and one that specifically weakens curses at that—is just too important to Duncan right now. A blessed object, as its name suggests, is a supernatural item that embodies the path of order and is diametrically opposed to curses, which embody the path of chaos. Where cursed objects draw their power from unpredictability and consequence, the powers of blessed objects are highly structured and rule-bound, and they require only a sacrifice to be able to wield them. Everything comes at a cost, especially when it concerns the supernatural, so one still has to pay a price if they want to wield a blessed object—therefore, the only difference lies in whether you had any control over what price you had to pay. Cursed objects enfor
Wish Pearl
The box was simple and unadorned, and at first glance, it didn’t draw any attention to itself at all. It was hard to imagine that something like this actually contained a blessed object within it and that Clara would actually be carrying it around so casually. Wasn’t she afraid that something would happen or that it would be stolen by someone? Although that thought crossed Duncan’s mind, he didn’t really care about it at all. All he cared about was that it was finally in his hands and now he could potentially get rid of the curse that had been plaguing him for such a long time. Immediately, Duncan opened the box, and his eyes instantly focused on the content within. It was a round pearl the size of a ping-pong ball. It was blue and glowed with a shimmering, hazy luster like it was surrounded by a faint mist. Taking a very close look at the pearl, Duncan tried to make heads of what he was seeing, but he could not do so. Despite his knowledge, Duncan came up blank when he tried
