"Is being managed," Wren said. "Qin Moonwater's network has been working through the practitioners Mao is approaching for three days.”"The approach success rate for Mao has been declining because the community is already present in the spaces she is trying to reach." She paused. "She has not found twelve to fifteen willing practitioners yet. At the current rate, she is not going to find them quickly." She paused. *"Sera is monitoring her movements through the Unmarked's surveillance infrastructure." She paused. "You are not the active variable in the Mao Shensong situation at this moment.""The accounting…""Elder Magistrate Sunderbrand, Elder Cho, Dara Coldspring, and Hara Moonstone's growing cooperation are managing the accounting," Wren said. "Hara Moonstone, after reading Aria Starfall's testimony in full, has been providing the most comprehensive inside account of the Elder Council's operational history of any cooperating member.”“More so than Elder Prime Shen, who provides

Fen Brightstone entered the meeting and did not provide a report for four hours.Four hours. Then the formation stone channel that Song Lianhua was maintaining produced the specific, activation quality of an incoming communication.Fen Brightstone's voice."She's coming," Fen said. "Not immediately. She needs time. But she's coming." She paused. "I told her what Qin Moonwater told me." “What sixty years of developing the heritage correctly produces. What the nine practitioners I have been in contact with since the emergency protocol described about their independent development." She paused. "I told her that the degradation problem is real and that the right response to it is not the extraction technique because the extraction technique is the same mechanism that was used on her and that she spent four years being used by, refined and made voluntary rather than involuntary but not fundamentally different." She paused. "She argued. For three hours." She paused. "In the fourth hou

Three weeks after the morning after, the Nine Heavens was still deciding what it was. This was not a metaphor. This was a practical, concrete, daily reality that expressed itself in specific, individual ways across every heaven and every sect and every practitioner who had woken up on the morning after and found that the framework they had been using to understand their world had been removed overnight without a replacement being available yet.The New Cultivation Academy had sixty-three practitioners in its garden space and a curriculum that Wren had built in three days and was revising daily based on what the sixty-three were producing in their interactions and a communication channel to the Devourers that was still, three weeks in, producing information that nobody had been prepared to receive and that required significant processing time before it could be incorporated into anything useful. The accounting process had eleven cooperating former Elder Council members, three thousand

Lian Veil was sitting at the table's far end with the flat, professional quality that was her characteristic mode and that was, this morning, doing more work than usual to maintain itself over the specific, personal quality that was underneath it.Kaelen Ashwright looked at her."Elder Advocate Lian Beaumont," he said. She looked at him."She is on the Irongate Authority's governing council," he said. "She raised you after your parents died. She submitted your application to the Celestial Inquisitor program." He paused. "I want to know what you know about her and what you think about her involvement in this."Lian Veil was quiet for a moment. The quality of the quiet was the quality of someone who has been waiting for this specific conversation and who is, in its arrival, neither relieved nor dreading it but simply present in it with the full weight of what it contains."My aunt," she said, and the word had the specific quality of a word that carried a relationship's entire history

"The Irongate Authority's compliance certification process requires practitioners to provide cultivation frequency identification," she said. "Standard procedure. Formation stone scan at the gate." She paused. "One of the seven people they detained produced a cultivation frequency scan that the gate's formation array classified as anomalous." She paused. "Not Convergence-adjacent. Something outside the gate array's classification system entirely." She paused. "The Irongate Authority's enforcement team escalated the anomalous scan to their formation specialists, who spent six hours trying to classify it." She paused. "They cannot." She paused again. "Kaelen Ashwright. The formation specialists' report describes the anomalous frequency as pre-dating the Nine Heavens' cultivation tradition's formation classification system." She paused. "They are saying the frequency appears to originate from a cultivation tradition that was active before the Nine Heavens existed."The meeting roo
