Chapter 41: The Eastern Wall Breach
Dawn on the vampire planet looked like the sky was bleeding—which, Erwin had come to understand after proper scrutiny. Also, the day is Tuesday here. It was a surprise that these vampires used some familiar naming system like back on Earth. The twin moons still hung at the horizon, gold and silver—the same ones he'd been staring at through Vance's window two nights ago when the Sovereign had told him about Godhood Rituals and centuries of planning and the inevitability of war. He stood on the eastern deck of the Fourth Castle, sixty feet above the approach roads, and watched thousands of vampires approaching. They moved like a tide. Not the disorganized rush of the soldiers he had trained against for the last two days. He didn't need anyone to tell him that these ones were different, but as far as they weren't as strong as the Sovereign, he'd be fine. "How many are they?" he muttered. "Twelve thousand," Vance said from beside him, his mismatched eyes calm as always, his silver ha
Chapter 42: One Sacrifice
"Do not attack Gideon, fall back!" Malachai's voice boomed with authority from atop the wall deck. "First and second cohort hold the courtyard. Third and fourth to the—" Behind Gideon who had already destroyed the gate, another wave of five hundred vampires rushed into the castle perimeter through the gate. Vance, who was thirty meters away along the wall, raised his hands to signal for Malachai to stop. "I'll take it from here." Vance added as his eyes began go gleam red, activating his blood anomaly. *SLAY YOUR ALLIES* Vance ordered using Blood Decree again, and instantly it took effect. The five hundred vampires from the Sixth Castle that were charging through the breached wall suddenly froze, losing control of their bodies for one moment. When their bodies gained control the next, it wasn't in accordance to their will again, but rather to the will of Vance. The bloodbath began. "Vance." Malachai's voice mattered in a low tone, staring at him. "Release them." Vance didn't
Chapter 43: The Cost For Survival
"You killed him," Erwin muttered, his eyes fused on Malachai face unblinking. "I did what the war required." Vance's voice carried no emotion, his gaze coldly staring down at Erwin still kneeling with Malachai's body in his arms. "I'll kill again if you proceed with his last wish, I heard it you know. Too bad the dying man's last wish is unfortunately not something attainable. "Don't forget your place as a tool for me and no one else, or you will join him." Erwin looked at him for a long moment. 'Vance, the sovereign of the Fourth Castle, is not your friend... Malachai, the sovereign of the Fifth Castle, is not your ally.' The words were replaying in his head. 'I'll agree with the first part of that statement you once made, Selene,' Erwin turned his gaze from Malachai's corpse. 'But not the second part.' He laid the body away and turned to Selene, who had been standing at the far end of the deck since Malachai fell and had not come closer, only watching expressionlessly. She wa
Chapter 44: Apologize In The Afterlife, Erwin.
The servant underground passages beneath the Fourth Castle were narrow and dark and old in a way that the castle's upper levels weren't bad and that was no surprise. No one would expect an underground to be bright, let alone in the vampire world. Up above, the architecture was deliberately excessive—high ceilings, chandelier bones, crystallized blood orbs mounted into the wall like trophies and so on because Vance had built the upper levels to be looked at. Down here, the architecture was just stone cut to allow passage and nothing else. Erwin moved fast, Pattern Reading extended in every direction, mapping the passage system through the dimensional skeleton of the stone around him. Malachai's ring got him through two locked junctions earlier, acting as a key to doors that practically didn't exist until discovered. Whoever had designed this system had designed it for someone who needed to hide something precious. "You are heading to the underground chamber," Einstein said besid
Chapter 45: Haemagogi
Herria's fists flared with pure essence energy as she lowered into a fighting stance. She and Erwin were locked in gaze, no one making a move yet, but now Erwin was also taking a stance, staying on high alert. "Herria, I don't know what has gotten into you, but you need to stop. I was warned to destroy the ritual chamber and prevent anyone from ascending, and lastly, this Haemagogi thing! You need to—" She was already moving again. [Dimensional Creation Activated] Erwin wasted no time as fifteen dimensional swords materialized simultaneously in a spread formation, launching toward her from different angles and heights. Not to kill. Not aimed at anything vital, but at positions that required her to deal with them instead of striking him. 'Damn! He's cornered me!' Herria's jaw tightened in realization as her eyeballs frantically darted around the swords coming at her. 'My Impact requires me to strike a particular object and make the impact manifest elsewhere. I can't strike all t
Chapter 46: Gideon's True Might
Moments earlier. The dust settled slowly as Vance stood at the broken edge of the deck, staring down at the narrow gap in the wall where the passage opened into the castle's lower underground floor levels. To no surprise, the passage was empty and Erwin was gone by the time the last of the rising dust thinned out and dissipated into nothing. "That boy had the ring." His mismatched eyes stayed fixed on the gap for a long moment. "I need to take care of him before Xed arrives, or he might truly prevent the ritual." He stepped over the rubble calmly and dropped into the gap and— Swoosh. Vance's eyes widened as something flashed towards him. Not from below, but from beside the passage entrance, where a figure had been waiting patiently for a surprise attack. Gideon. That was right. Selene and Malachai had been the ones keeping an eye on him, but they were no more. The champion of the Sixth Castle stood with his crystal blade extended, narrowly missing a sliced at Vance neck, and
Chapter 47: Xed Arrival
Blood sprayed out from Gideon's nose and his will also finally gave up. Gideon's hand dropped that was looming above slowly dropped, then his body followed. Thud. He hit the floor with a soft thud and the crystal blade rolled and came to rest against the wall. By now, the crystallized blade has melted into blood. And now, Vance stood over him. Looked at the scar-covered face still, the black eyes no longer open. "You warm up would have been well appreciated if only you hadn't come when I had something else to take care of." Vance wiped off the blood stains on his lips and turned his focus back to the gap leading underground where Erwin had escaped to. "Now, it's time to... "GIDEON!" The voice boomed from a distance away, hitting Vance like a physical force that caused his eyes to widen. He turned and he could see who he was hoping he wouldn't see yet, Xed! Xed stood at the far end of the deck wall, having come over the top of the castle's inner battlements. He had not arri
Chapter 48: The Surface Of The Underground
Vance may have been dependent on Blood Decree most of the time, but the fact that he was a sovereign-rank entity just couldn't be changed. The Blood Decree holding Xed's breath had ended, signifying that either he was dead or he had resisted the blood decree. Turns out Xed was breathing, meant he was alive and kicking. No one expected a sovereign to die that easily. He raised his head to look at Vance through the hole his body had created on the wall and smiled. Don't get it wrong, this was a crazed smile that carried no warmth. "Your Blood Decree lasts mostly one seconds against me," he said. "Internal and external blood decree that is." Swoosh! He blasted forward from the wall crater at Vance with his inhuman speed and threw his clenched fist, but Vance caught it. However, that didn't stop the force from the shockwave of the brute strength attack from shattering the unrelated floor behind Vance. *YOUR EYES SHALL CLOSE.* Vance commanded and activated his control over his blo
Chapter 49: Haemagogi Awakening
It began when the godhood ascension ritual was introduced into the vampire world over a thousand years ago. It is common knowledge that vampires are creatures that take pride in strength. War was normalized in the vampire world, but the moment the ritual became known, the war rate skyrocketed and intensified. With the uncontrollable urge to be the strongest, all the vampires wanted to perform the ritual and ascend above their peers. Unfortunately, however, the ritual had a major restriction. It needed the blood of all six blood anomaly possessors. And blood anomaly, unfortunately, was not something all vampires possessed because it cannot be learned, only passed down from the previous owner. Due to the fact that a blood anomaly is not learned but inherited in the vampire world, there were only six anomaly possessors at a time. The six total blood anomalies in the entire vampire world were owned only by the sovereigns of the first to sixth castles, respectively: the instant telepor
Chapter 50: Will Of Destruction
Sovereigns are fast. However, Haemagogi was faster. I mean faster than Xed, who was already moving at a speed that left an afterimage in the air where he'd been standing in the eyes of a mortal. Haemagogi crossed the thirty-foot distance between himself and Xed so fast that Xed wasn't able to react in time. 'That's what sovereign speed looks like to me,' Erwin watched from the sidelines. 'And Haemagogi is faster.' Wham! His lower-right arm delivered a strike that Xed blocked with both forearms crossed. Yet, the force of the block sent Xed sliding backward twelve feet across the black stone floor, his heels carving lines in it. Turns out Haemagogi wasn't merely stronger—he was faster as well. "Erwin," Vance said, appearing beside Erwin with that same sovereign quickness. "I'll need your help on this fight." Even battered as he was, he'd moved without Erwin registering the motion. "I have good news and bad news. I'll start with the good news: he is still disoriented because he j
