Chapter 61: The Amber Eye Stare
The Advanced Pattern Reading was going to take some getting used to. That was the polite way of describing what happened every time Erwin activated it inside the Ascendant bracket's building. Three times the detail of Intermediate wasn't three times the usefulness right now. It was three times the noise. The aura layer alone turned the building from a space of black and white into something that looked like a painting done by someone who hadn't been told what colors were for. He deactivated it after about forty seconds and stood there with his eyes closed, waiting for the visual static to settle. "You'll need to practice not shutting it off," Einstein said. "I'll practice when my brain stops trying to process two hundred strangers at once." "The discomfort is the adjustment, not an indication that something is wrong." "Such wonderful insight from a dumb bird," Erwin muttered, then opened his eyes. The building was just the building again—with tiers and walkways and participant
Chapter 62: Establishing Alliance
The amber-eyed creature stopped advancing. It was so close now that he could see the faint vertical slit of its pupils in the dim light of Community 7's ground floor now. The thing held his gaze with Erwin even till now and not worth hostility, yet still, made Erwin's skin crawl more than hostility would have. "Community 7." That was the first thing it said. "I'm aware of which community I'm in," Erwin replied flatly, his fist hanging loose at his side. 'I don't know what this thing's essence anomaly does. Could be offensive, could be passive. I'll keep both options open and refrain from commit for now.' "I know you know." The creature leaned forward slightly, just one or two inches, and when it spoke again its voice dropped low. "You've been watching the building for two days." It paused and then added. "And I've been watching you watch it." Erwin face shifted into surprise but then he quickly surpressed It without letting the expression stay for more than a second, he needed
Chapter 63: Aura Darkness
The cafeteria on the third tier had one table near the far wall that nobody ever sat at. Erwin had noticed this on day one. A perfectly functional table with four seats, and no visible reason for the vacancy, yet no one was using it. Erwin was sitting at it now. Fernando was across from him, working through something that looked like a compressed nutrient block the tower provided, probably the kind of food his kind ate. The tower seemed to have everything suitable for every creature, honestly. Fernando set down the nutrient block and started. "The royale starts in forty-seven hours and thirty minutes. Based on the community breakdown I gave you, the twelve-member faction from the east building will move as a single unit in the first fifteen minutes." "They have three Ascendant C ranks and collective coordination. Against individuals, that combination ends fights quickly." "They're not going to come at us first," Erwin said. "We're not the obvious threats. They'll consolidate aga
Chapter 64: The Start Of The Ascendant Battle Royale
"The Ascendant bracket battle royale will begin now." Xyrros's voice sounded across Community 7 just like always, and all the participants in the tower instinctively halted in their tracks to listen to the announcement, fully focused. "The arena for Floor 21 is The Crownless Basin." "Your objective is to establish community hierarchy. Ranking will be determined by point accumulation, survival, and dominance." "The top five participants will receive priority ranking and recognition." "Bottom five participants will not be given any privilege." "May the cosmos favour the worthy." The entire building went still for one second, then the floor beneath Erwin's feet vanished the next. White light swallowed Community 7. The tiers, the bridges, the cafeteria, the east corner, Fernando's alcove—all of it was engulfed, and then they were all elsewhere. The Crownless Basin was a crater. Not a metaphorical one. A real one. Erwin landed halfway down a sloped wall of black stone and loose g
Chapter 65: First Alliance Battle
While the faction members were herding other creatures, the independent climbers tried to break from the chase for better positions. The fear-alliance tried to stay together and was already failing. Stragglers panicked downhill because the natural instinct in an open crater was always to seek the center, even when the center was the kill zone. [System Notification] [Ranking Established] [Current Rank: 37/61] [Note: Surviving while inactive will not secure top-five placement] Erwin clicked his tongue. "The system is in a hurry." Fernando moved then, crossing the slope in three long bursts until he reached Erwin's position. "Change of plan." "We had a plan?" "Loose framework, then. We need points early, but not from the faction." Erwin nodded once. "Agreed." "The seventeen-member fear-alliance is breaking exactly where it should." Fernando gestured to the left at them. "Six of them are already choosing self-preservation over formation." Erwin followed Fernando's gaze and saw
Chapter 66: Protecting The Node
A scream cut across the basin at the ground bottom. One of the fear-alliance members had made the mistake of trying to strike Kaladian from behind with a chain weapon glowing gold with essence. Rattle! The chain touched and truly wrapped around the Hellmare's body, to everyone's greatest surprise. Kaladian could truly be touched! This was the thought running through everyone's mind with rising confidence. ...Then the chain cracked. The glowing chain, starting from the point in contact with Kaladian, began to shatter backward speedily. The wielder let go too late to drop the chain from his grip, and the price he paid was the loss of three fingers. He began screaming. Kaladian didn't even turn fully. He only half-looked at the wounded participant and, for the first time, spoke. "Die!" Then the screaming stopped abruptly, and the man's entire right body burst into motes of light instantly. That was one death occurring before everyone by Kaladian, without even throwing a fist.
Chapter 67: Two Vs Three
The battle royale was similar to the one Erwin had experienced during Floor 1 of the Mortal bracket. However, this one had two parts. The first was survival, which was the normal rule for battle royale. The second was dominance. And dominance, from what Erwin had figured out, was node occupancy. The silver-lit object behind him wasn't just a checkpoint or a decorative objective the tower had thrown into the basin for fun. It was a measuring scale. Hold the node long enough, beat back challengers, prove you could keep territory under pressure, and the tower would count that as more than survival. It would count it as hierarchy. Below them, the basin was still chaos. One node near the rim had already changed owners twice. Another had gone dark with corpses around it and no one willing to step close again. And the center node... The center node belonged to Kaladian now. Not because the system had said it. Because the whole damn battlefield was unconsciously avoiding the thing
Chapter 68: I've Been Using It Wrong!
Good news, the effect of the golden wave disruption faded off fortunately very quickly, and Erwin regained his control over his essence anomaly. Bad news, whether or not his essence anomaly was functioning, he never truly stood a chance against these three figures rushing towards him and Fernando. [Dimension Creation Activated] Slash! [HP: 131/150 → 108/150] His warm blood soaked his clothes instantly as an attack from Veyr's talon sliced through his skin. Erwin barely caught the next strike, this one from Sarvek, with a short sword created at the last second. He twisted, trying to redirect the force to the ground, but then Brokk roared again. Yeah, that's right. How could he expect the creature to roar just once when it could do it again? ROOOOOOAAAAARRR!!! A golden pulse from his mouth slammed across the node's open side, and the sword in Erwin's hand dissolved while still touching Sarvek's blade arm. The loss of resistance nearly got him killed, but again, he dodged at th
Chapter 69: Everyone's Horror In The Crownless Basin
Erwin's eyes widened as he came to realization the absolute fact of the momen. 'I've been using it wrong.' 'I've been using my gravity wrong.' 'Gravity is supposed to grant me way more tricks than what I can do. If I use it properly, it could grant me the ability to fly, or lift objects, or use incredible offensive force like Terrax.' 'It may consume a load of essence energy, but if I use it properly, I could get its worth.' ROOOOAAAARRR! Erwin felt the golden wave coming at him, traveling across through the roaring sound from Brokk. Turns out the damn creature had decided to give Fernando a breathing space now and come at Erwin instead of Veyr and Sarvek. However, though, the thunderous sound felt muffled in Erwin's ears. He was starting to build up something from the inside... Even the air and aura around him was changing. [Warning: Gravity Output Exceeding Current Safe Threshold] [Warning: Muscular Strain Detected] [Warning: Fearless Fool Title Reacting] The notification
Chapter 70: The Black Flame Of Disintegration
Nobody ran... and that was the stupid part. Not because they didn't want to, but in fact, the only thought going through the minds of Erwin, Fernando, Veyr, Brokk, and Sarvek at this moment was running. However, instinct and actions had begun disagreeing again. The moment Kaladian smiled, the entire basin changed. Other fights had been noisy before, but now the noise was starting to die strangely, and participants who had also been fighting their own battles here and there all turned to look. Even those who shouldn't be affected by what was about to play out still felt the terror. Fernando got up, swaying, with one hand pressed against the hole in his shoulder. His left eye was still green with time anomaly ready for use, but his right had gone hard and focused. "Don't split, no matter what," he said, not just at Erwin but at the entire crew, and they knew that. Sarvek spat black blood and looked disgusted that he was going to agree with a weaker participant. Brokk had stoppe
