Chapter 21 - Lessons in Steel
Kalen and Anthos advanced through the white snow, still firmly rooted to the ground, as the sun peeked through the clouds and dazzled their eyes. The terrain was uneven, but it had become much flatter now that they were moving away from the mountains. A few trees scattered in small clusters weren’t nearly enough to cover the horizon, not even on the hills. A calm yet freezing wind struck their weathered faces. For Anthos, following the trail of the druid apprentice wasn’t too difficult. Though not an expert tracker, he knew enough and had the necessary experience to pursue his prey without issue. Perhaps it wasn’t his strongest skill, but he was better at it than the rest of his companions—except Begryn. He remembered once again the Blood Claws, when he had to act as a tracker for a group hired to hunt down an ogre. That had been near the city of Proco, in southern Trabarioth, where the orcs of the frozen lands lived. In fact, it had been those very orcs who had hired them, and there
Chapter 22 - Old Habits Die Hard
The guide was not surprised, but he did watch in silence as the Paladin prayed. He had arranged three slightly oval stones around an ember he had taken from the fire. On them, he placed a small waterskin on one, a gold ring on another—which he removed from his left hand—and on the middle one, a small reliquary that always hung from his neck beneath his robes. Apparently, it held prayers or something of the sort. He recited a few words that Anthos did not quite catch, and the ember flared for an instant as if someone were blowing on it. He gathered his belongings and, after a bow toward the sun, rose to his feet. The morning came cold, but with a sun that began to take shape through a thin red line on the horizon, turning the few clouds into pink tufts of cotton in the clearing sky. In little time, they gathered the few things from their makeshift camp and pressed on, following Ertai’s trail, which, though fading, was still fairly visible.Around midday, with the trail now even clearer
Chapter 23 - Fool Me Twice
For several hours, they advanced at nearly a trot, without exchanging a word, until they stopped by the banks of a stream to drink water and eat some salted meat.“I want to make something perfectly clear,” said Kalen ‘Fal through clenched teeth, glaring at Anthos with fury from beneath his thick brows and the strands of hair that fell across his face. “What you did back there was the act of a petty thug, devoid of any kind of virtue. Had the circumstances been only slightly different, it would have been the last time we stood as colleagues. I want to believe that what I saw was nothing but a shadow of your past, not something you’re still suppressing.”“We got the information, Kalen. We didn’t have time to waste talking.”“Did you see that man? He wasn’t some filthy bandit who deserves to be hacked to pieces, nor a mindless monster.” He pointed furiously back in the direction they had come from. “Did you see his face, the fear in his eyes? Did you see how he looked at you? He said he
Chapter 24 - Shame On Me
The beasts began to circle around Kalen, but aside from the occasional rush, they didn’t attack right away. The knight noticed the macabre smiles on their feminine faces, filled with sharp, pointed teeth. Their arms were the wings that kept them aloft, but their massive legs bore three powerful black claws.“By the grace of Leiorus… I’ll end you all,” he said as he swung his sacred sword through the air. There was a moment of tension when time itself seemed to halt, until suddenly, without warning, they let out frenzied screams and hurled themselves at him. The knight dodged the first two, tracing half-circles with his blade and cutting them clean in half, showering himself with the beasts’ guts and blood. A third managed to reach him and slash his back, but it was her final act in life, for her head was severed from her shoulders by a swift strike. The harpies attacked with dizzying ferocity, while the knight moved in circular patterns to cover every angle, also trying to guard his b
Chapter 25 - Blood and Barley
After moving Galfrido to a sheltered, more comfortable spot—no easy task, since the enormous man must have weighed a ton—the half-blood elf began gathering branches and logs to start a fire. There was a small grove not far from there. She found herself wondering if it had been a good idea to stay behind instead of going with Kalen, but that no longer mattered. They had left several hours ago. She trusted fully in the knight’s skills, and, in large part, she had learned to trust Anthos as well.Once the fire was lit, she cooked some of the remaining legumes. It wasn’t much, enough perhaps for that night’s supper and one more lunch, but nothing beyond that. She hoped Galfrido would be better by morning. The night wrapped Galfrido and Begryn in a cold, starry mantle, with the moon still casting light over the valley and, farther away, over the Ramei Mountains. The elf could not help but wonder what had become of the cursed witch Baba Yaga. She had heard a thousand tales of that infernal
Chapter 26 - Hell's Horseman
The sunbeams that slipped through the wooden lattice of the open attic struck her eyes and pulled her from a deep sleep. It was clear she had needed it after so much time exposed to the elements—especially after having had a beer. In the bed beside her, Galfrido was snoring loudly, a thin line of drool trailing from the corner of his mouth. The room they were in was fairly spacious, with wooden floors, ceiling, and walls—worn and slightly damp. It held two beds and a small chest beneath the window, empty and battered. At the center stood a pedestal with a bowl full of water. The elf rose, approached the vessel, and splashed her face, trying to fully shake off her drowsiness. She gathered her loose, tangled violet hair and tied it back as she usually did.She slipped on her worn leather boots, and almost immediately the blisters reminded her of the long march she and Galfrido had endured on their way to the village. She went down the stairs and sat at one of the tables nearest the wood
Chapter 27 - Among the Ashes
They noticed the looting had ended. They couldn’t tell whether hours or minutes had passed, as the adrenaline coursing through their bodies warped their perception—sharpening their senses but distorting their sense of time. They saw groups of orcs pass by, carrying supplies such as barrels or crates. Others passed with corpses slung over their shoulders. At first, they didn’t understand why, but then they realized they were preparing to impale everyone who had fallen in Rivero, surely to leave their mark of terror.“It’s a stroke of luck they haven’t spotted us yet,” Begryn suddenly said. They began to notice a light drizzle falling. “But if we stay here, they’ll find us.”“The way’s clear now,” said Galfrido, peering out from between the crates, straw, and filth. “If we make it to the river, we might find some place to hide. Orcs hate the water—it’ll give us an edge.”“Alright… let’s follow this path to the watermill. From there, it’ll be easier to skirt the river.”“Agreed.” They ad
Chapter 28 - The Only Road Left
Night fell beneath a thick shroud of clouds and a fine, icy drizzle. Around the village, there was no snow, and the path taken by Faradax’s vanguard could still be seen. The warrior and the elf were inside the mill when the unmistakable crack of breaking branches startled them.“I sense something… listen…” Galfrido said suddenly, reaching for the greatsword on his back.As if by magic, Begryn vanished into the shadows, bow in hand, arrow drawn. Her violet eyes gleamed like those of a feline in the darkness. A figure cautiously appeared at the mill’s entrance. The elf loosed an arrow in warning, its shaft landing just inches from the stranger’s face. He flinched and raised his sword.“Begryn?” he said almost in a whisper, recognizing the dark-feathered arrow.“Kalen?” the elf stepped out from the shadows.“Thanks be to Kramer!” Galfrido exclaimed, lowering the greatsword he had been ready to cleave in two anyone who dared enter looking for a fight. “What a joy to see you alive! And you
Chapter 29 - The Dragon Hunters' Keep
It didn’t take them long to find a bridge to cross to the other side of the Diamond River. The wooden crossing was quite precarious and didn’t even have a guard post, but it was located at a rather narrow stretch of the water, so they managed to cross without difficulty. Several days had already passed since they had left behind the village of Rivero, with its funeral pyre and charred buildings. After that, the days had been gray and rainy, marked by a bout of snowstorms one night. From the smoke and the stench of death, they could deduce that Faradax and his army had crossed the main bridge toward Epsilia, and that the city had fallen. They hadn’t come across any survivors or refugees from the ravaged villages, but that was only logical, since the adventurers were traveling through inhospitable and sparsely populated lands. Not a very appealing choice for those who had survived. With that sorrowful image lingering in their minds, they pressed on through the frozen lands. More than on
Chapter 30 - Nightmares and Firelight
Now it was Begryn and Galfrido’s turn, as they sat contemplating the glow of the fire, drinking a hot tea that Kalen had prepared for their watch. It was those small details that made the elf look at the knight in a different way. At one point, Begryn noticed that the warrior couldn’t take his eyes off her.“Is something wrong?” asked the elf.“Nothing… It’s just that… I always knew you were a half-elf… but that whole mix of races among elves seems rather strange to me. Strange, in fact.” Begryn couldn’t help but burst into laughter.“What? What’s so funny?”“After all these years, and now you suddenly bring this up?”“Not all of us deal with time the same way, my friend. Besides, we’ve barely spent that much time together on a mission. And I remembered how odd it seemed to me, that thing about hybrid elf races, when you mentioned it to Anthos while we were still in the lands of Doknar.”“Well… what do you want to know? I should tell you I don’t usually share this kind of thing with a
