Chapter 41
A moment later, an Abyssal slowly stepped out. Its skin was a pale purple color. The body resembled that of a human, but its head looked like a skull barely covered with thin flesh. The stretched skin made its nose appear grotesquely large. And it was massive. Nearly three meters tall. “Hide,” Gaelion whispered sharply, slapping the back of Rhys’s head as they ducked deeper into the bushes. The Abyssal scanned the surrounding forest, as though it had sensed someone watching. Rhys held his breath. A faint rumbling sound echoed from the hill. Carefully, Rhys shifted his position and peeked through a small gap in the bushes. What he saw made his stomach sink. The Abyssal had a tree slung over its shoulder. An entire tree. And it was clearly using it as a weapon. If that thing swings even once… Rhys thought grimly. We’re dead. Worse still, the five Lesser-class Abyssals nearby were clearly guarding it. Gaelion would have to focus entirely on the Common-class Abyssal. Whic

Wait… that’s not how your script is supposed to go. Rhys had the strange urge to say those exact words out loud, but the situation around them didn’t give him the chance. The Abyssals quickly recovered from the sudden ambush and began pushing back against the familiars. Their numbers were simply overwhelming. Even with Xander’s group assisting, the monsters still outnumbered them. Rhys narrowed his eyes. He couldn’t bring himself to fully trust Xander and his companions. Still, this chaos created a perfect opportunity. “Gaelion!” The wolf immediately reacted. With a powerful leap, Gaelion lunged toward one of the Abyssals that was already locked in combat with a hobgoblin. The hobgoblin flinched in surprise when the wolf suddenly appeared beside it. However, Gaelion’s movements were precise. His tail flicked through the air with incredible accuracy, slicing straight through the Abyssal while avoiding the hobgoblin entirely. Once the hobgoblin realized what had happened, it

“We should have crushed that lowly farmer when we had the chance!” one of the boys shouted, unable to hide his frustration with Xander’s decision. Another member of the group lowered his head guiltily. “I’m sorry,” he muttered. “I didn’t expect a mutant to be among those Abyssals.” “!!!” The remaining three immediately turned toward him in shock. “What did you say?” Xander simply waved his hand dismissively, as if the matter wasn’t worth dwelling on. “It doesn’t matter anymore,” he said calmly. “What matters is that we’ve seen what he’s capable of.” His eyes narrowed slightly as he thought back to the fight. “That boy’s Mana Manipulation has already reached the stage of manifestation.” The others fell silent. “That alone is impressive,” Xander continued, “but that wolf of his is even more troublesome.” He crossed his arms. “It can speak, and its strength is already far beyond any of our familiars.” “But—” “There is no ‘but.’” Xander cut the protest off immediately. “I

“I think I found the solution.” Rhys smiled faintly as he said those words. The person who had just arrived at his campsite was none other than Maeve. He had no idea how she had ended up wandering this far, but one glance was enough for him to realize that something was wrong. Her condition was terrible. Dark circles hung heavily beneath her eyes, her skin looked pale, and her entire posture seemed unstable. She swayed slightly as she stood there, as if her body could collapse at any moment. Compared to her, even Xander and his group had looked far more energetic. Behind her, the vampire familiar still carried her usual calm demeanor, but the tension in her eyes revealed how worried she truly was. “Well, well…” Rhys narrowed his eyes slightly. “To what do I owe the pleasure of two lovely ladies visiting my camp?” He tilted his head with a teasing smile. “Did you come all this way just to surrender?” Maeve immediately bit her lip. She hadn’t expected Rhys to look this relaxe

Risa hesitated. “If I do that,” Rhys continued, “she’ll assume I’m pitying her.” He sighed. “That will only make her even more reckless.” He glanced at Maeve. “At least she’s just exhausted. If she had fallen sick instead, things would be much worse.” Risa lowered her eyes. She couldn’t deny that Rhys had a point. “I don’t know what else to do,” she admitted quietly. Rhys crossed his arms. “The only real solution is to make her admit defeat herself.” He paused before adding another thought. “Although… there might not even be a need for that.” Risa looked up in confusion. “What do you mean?” “If she keeps pushing herself like this—” “I know,” Rhys interrupted. “But there’s another way.” He smiled slightly. “A way for her to keep going… without destroying herself.” Risa stared at him in disbelief. She couldn’t imagine any method that would actually change Maeve’s mind. Of course she couldn’t. Rhys himself had only realized the possibility an hour ago. “But I’ll ne

“Why were you even born as a woman?!” The shrill scream echoed through the large mansion, sharp enough to pierce the silence of the hallways. Inside one of the distant rooms, an eight-year-old Maeve sat curled up on the floor. She pressed her hands tightly against her ears, trying to block out the voice that continued raging somewhere beyond the door. Her small body trembled. She buried her face into her knees, biting her lips to keep herself from crying out loud. In her heart, she wanted to scream back. Shut up. But the words never left her mouth. “Father… please help me…” The words slipped out weakly, barely louder than a whisper. If her father had been there, things would have been different. She was certain of it. Every memory she had of him was bright and warm, filled with colors and laughter that seemed to belong to a completely different life. Her father’s voice echoed softly in her mind. “I know you’ll grow up to be strong, Maeve.” “You are my pride and joy.” “

Maeve pulled a letter from her sleeve and placed it on the desk. The moment her uncle saw the seal, his expression changed. The symbol of Valaris Academy. “I will be enrolling at Valaris Academy as a Beast Tamer,” she said firmly. Her uncle scoffed. “You think becoming a Beast Tamer will change your destiny?” His voice was cold. “That’s meaningless.” Maeve lifted her chin. “Maybe it is.” “But maybe it isn’t.” She met his gaze directly. “What we do know is that you won’t be able to touch me while I’m under the protection of Valaris Academy.” Her uncle’s hands tightened into fists. “Do you think three years will save you?” he sneered. “Do you think that’s enough time to escape your fate?” His voice grew darker. “Or do you think it’s enough time to find your father?” He laughed coldly. “If he hasn’t returned after all these years, then he’s already dead somewhere.” Even if you graduate, no matter how talented you are… you still won’t summon a progenitor.” Maeve’s voi

“Mmm…?” A faint sound escaped Maeve’s lips as her eyes slowly opened. “…It’s warm.” Her voice came out rough, as though her throat had gone dry from exhaustion. Her muscles ached, and her entire body still felt heavy, but strangely enough, her mind felt far clearer than before. The cold that had tormented her earlier was gone. “You’re awake?” Rhys’s voice reached her ears. The sound instantly reminded her of the events before she lost consciousness. “!” Maeve jerked upright in surprise. Her eyes widened as she realized Rhys was sitting beside her. Well… not exactly beside her. A line of neatly arranged stones separated them, forming a small barrier between two shallow trenches in the ground. “I…” She didn’t know what to say. Rhys raised a hand casually and pointed toward Risa. “Just to be clear,” he said calmly, “I didn’t do anything strange. I only moved you here. Your familiar saw everything.” Maeve quickly turned her head. Risa stood nearby, calmly stirring someth

The next morning arrived quietly. Rhys and Gaelion slipped away from the shelter shortly after waking up. Before leaving, Rhys casually told Risa that the two of them wanted some privacy to discuss their strategy for fighting the Common-class Abyssal. Risa didn’t question it. Maeve was still eating breakfast, so the two simply walked off into the trees until the shelter was no longer visible. After a few minutes of walking, Gaelion finally slowed down. “Alright,” he said, glancing around. “This should be far enough.” Rhys nodded. Without wasting any time, he opened his palm. A faint shimmer appeared in the air before a scroll materialized in his hand. “Let’s finish this,” Rhys said. “Soul Contract.” He looked down at the scroll thoughtfully. “We didn’t do it yesterday, but if we want to take down that Common-class Abyssal safely, this is necessary.” Gaelion gave a short nod. “Right. I already stated the terms.” “I know.” As soon as the words left Rhys’s mout

Both of them returned to the shelter soon afterward. Maeve and Risa were already preparing for the fight. But the moment they saw Gaelion, both of them froze. The wolf was much larger than before. With his current size, there was no way he could sit comfortably on Rhys’s head like he used to. Maeve stared at him in disbelief. “…You grew?” Her eyes shifted back and forth between Rhys and Gaelion. “Yeah,” Rhys said casually. “With this, our chances against the Abyssal just improved.” Maeve frowned slightly. Familiars becoming stronger wasn’t unusual. But dramatic physical changes like this usually only happened when a creature evolved into a higher race. Gaelion hadn’t evolved. He had simply regained part of his original strength. “Enough talking,” Gaelion grumbled impatiently. “Eat faster.” His tail flicked irritably. “I’m getting tired of waiting.” “I want to tear that Abyssal apart already.” As they walked back toward the campfire, Maeve couldn’t stop thinking abo
