Chapter 0011
Adam Smith“What do you think about my outfit?” Rosa was dressed in a white T-shirt, a white short skirt, and white sneakers. Her hair wasn’t made into a bun. It was free, cascading over her shoulders as she posed by the mirror. I smiled in admiration of her and slowly walked up to her, bare-chested but in pants. I slowly crossed my hands around her waist and moved my face menacingly close to hers, like I was about to steal a sudden kiss from her. “You look gorgeous,” I whispered into her face. “My angel.” She smiled. I kissed her cheek and released her waist. “We should hurry up,” I said as I returned to the bed to pick up the white T-shirt Rosa had laid out for me. “Grandpa would be eagerly waiting.” She nodded and watched me wear the shirt, then she grabbed my golf shoes and walked up to me. She gave me a gentle nudge on the shoulder, and I sat on the bed. She went down on both knees and helped me with the shoes, but in utter silence. I let out a breath and placed a hand on
Chapter 0012
Mr. Conrad“Comrade Conrad.” A shaky voice called me from behind as I filed in with my friends, all of us holding our golf clubs in firm grips while chatting and laughing at those of us who performed terribly badly in the tournaments. One of us was making mockery of another, citing the fella’s poor performance in the past, and another was cracking himself up with laughter when the call came. I turned to see who it was, and there he was, standing between his son and daughter, all of them dressed in white T-shirts and brown trousers, paired with white shoes and white caps. “Kennedy,” I hollered, drawing every other person’s attention to us. He wobbled to meet me, and as he closed in, I spread my hands wide and wrapped him up in a hug. His children joined us, both smiling. His son was slightly older than Adam, and from what I knew of him, he loved playing with us, not with the young men. While the daughter, I believe Kennedy brought her here to find her a suitor. She looks more like h
Chapter 0013
RosaEscaping the first attack was a miracle, but the second was crafty. Adam’s boss wanted to use me as a human shield after we managed to escape the building through the lift that had a half-eaten corpse dumped on the floor by one of the violent zombies looming around. How those silly beasts managed to surge up the building was still a shock, and the fact that Adam was already infected was another big shock. Had he told us the city was under a zombie outbreak, we could have figured out a safe way around things, but he chose to be emotional. I worry for him, but not more than I worry for myself. As we ran out of the lift, both of us naked, a female zombie lunged at us. Adam’s boss ignored the metal seat on the floor and chose me instead. He shoved me toward the zombie and took off. The zombie snapped her jaws at me, but she missed. I was quick. I ran down the long passage. She chased, snarling as she did, while the rumblings of zombies devouring everything in flats behind the win
Chapter 0014
Adam SmithNight came fast after a quiet drive back to the estate. A light lunch kept us going till the maids knocked on my door to announce that they had brought the designated outfit for the dinner. Rosa received the neat package and shut the door while I lay in bed, playing with a golf ball I brought home from the golf course. Rosa took the package to the sofa by the window and laid it out while I watched her spotless body gleaming through her see-through nightwear. We hadn’t touched each other since we returned from the hospital, and I had never thought of it, but not now. Her spotless legs now looked too attractive to ignore, but a part of me was unsure what business I had with her before the accident, and the reason why Grandfather, James, and Maria were clearly not comfortable having her around me. Why was she fighting so hard to remain by my side, and why were they keeping mute rather than pouring out their minds? Maybe everything she ever told me was true, or they were ke
Chapter 0015
Maria I’ve always known patience and heartbreak. The fact that the maid’s daughter stole Adam’s attention the very first time he set eyes on her was enough for me to stay awake all night and weep in silence. It all started ten years ago, during a summer holiday. Like always, Uncle James brought me to the Smith estate in Seoul to spend the holiday with Mr. Conrad and his grandson, Adam Smith, who had been my bosom friend from the very day it was announced that his parents died in a plane crash. I was with him throughout those depressive years, and that was how we became bosom friends, and most times, Mr. Conrad and Uncle James would joke that the both of us would surely end up someday as husband and wife. What they failed to realize then was that even though we were young, Adam had already won my heart without knowing, and I was his best friend. I kept dreaming of that day, learning more about him and believing I would be the one, until the maid brought her daughter to Seoul. At
Chapter 0016
MariaI have a role assigned to me by Mr. Conrad. That role is just one thing: deciding what clothes Adam and the rest of the Smith estate wear for special functions. Even Rosa was part of my responsibility. I always chose the best brands and styles and assigned the maids to pass them around, but even though Adam always showed up in the designated attire, Rosa always showed up differently. She loved to flaunt her spotless legs, her angelic beauty, and her wonderful figure. Yes, Mr. Conrad condemns her mode of dressing, but I feel he hasn’t done enough. I want him to snuff her out of the story. I want her done away with, but someone, everyone, is scared of acting rashly, because if she could make him abandon the estate and all his inheritance and flee with her to New York City some years ago, she could do worse if care is not taken. “Handle this with care, you,” I said to the maid standing before me as I handed her a package of Adam’s clothes for the dinner. I had carefully selecte
Chapter 0017
Adam SmithRosa made the choice this time around. She chose all-black outfits for the both of us, and she called it the rebel couple’s attire. We walked into the dinner hall, her hand trapped in mine, as we stepped in majestically, drawing everybody’s attention towards us. Grandfather was sitting at the high table, while every other person was seated around the massive dinner table. Among them were old and young men from the golf course, then lots of young ladies seated next to the young men. Not a single old woman. But there were a few empty seats that looked like they were reserved for some people. We chose the two seats at the tail of the table. It wasn’t my intention to do that, but Rosa had wanted to. Everyone watched us till we sat, then Grandfather cleared his throat. “Adam,” he said, “if you don’t mind, that’s not the right place for you.” I nodded. “Yes, but I think I feel more comfortable sitting here than there,” I said, faking a smile. “Why not declare the dinner sta
Chapter 0018
Adam SmithThe music in the second hall, otherwise called the ballroom, was different. Stewards were waiting with trays of wine glasses for whoever was in to drink themselves to stupor, but people barely gave attention to the stewards and what they had on the trays. “The man of the night should open the floor,” one of the old men hollered. I took a breath and stretched my hand out for Rosa, who was standing beside me. She placed her soft hand into mine, and together, we stepped onto the dance floor, my hand holding her waist and her slightly raised hand, while her head rested over my shoulder. More couples joined us. They were mostly young men swapping their sisters with other young men. Soon, the dance floor was full of young couples dancing, while the older ones watched and whispered among themselves. One of the old men drifted to the stewards. He took a glass of wine from the trays and guzzled every drop without breathing. He dropped the now empty glass on the tray and grabbed
Chapter 0019
Rosa I never thought Adam would casually let another man take my hand on the dance floor, but that’s the rule of the dance, and he had to yield even though Seth had a dark glint in his eyes.I feel he’s the most daring man I have ever met in all my years of meeting men. A man who knew how powerful the Smith family is and still wouldn’t mind putting his hands on the heir’s woman. He danced like a pro, far better than Adam, whom all the young and old men in the dancing hall were shoving their sisters and daughters toward. One of them was Kirk, who kept looking his way, maybe intending to shove his own sister toward him and watch them bond on the dance floor, just because he believed Adam deserved better.I danced absentmindedly with Seth until he spun me around and caught me by the waist. That’s the dance though, but I felt disgusted to be spun and caught in such a manner.A wicked smile broke across his face, and he gradually whisked me up and danced like he was
Chapter 0020
Mr. Conrad“Your grandson is a good dancer, Conrad,” a voice behind me rose amidst the loud music and the loud cheering of the young dancers doing their thing on the dance floor with so much energy.I turned slowly to meet Kennedy standing behind me, dressed in an expensive tuxedo, his fingers clasped around the stem of a slim glass of sparkling wine. I forced a smile and offered him a handshake, knowing he had come not for the dinner party, but for the matter at hand; his niece. He passed the glass to his son and shook hands with me, then I led him out of the hall. We did not utter a word to each other even as we strolled past the dining hall.I led him outside the mansion and stopped by the garden. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed an unsaved number while Kennedy watched in silence.“Sir?”“Come.”“Okay, sir.”I returned the phone to my pocket, drew out a breath and released it while waiting. Kennedy, now looking impatient, decided to speak up.“Who did y
