081 The Black Witch
Morgana stepped out of the crater, and the broken asphalt cracked under her boots.Smoke curled off the hem of her cloak. She stood a full head taller than Jack, and her gloved fingers flexed at her sides, slow and hungry. The flat calm Jack knew from her voice was gone. From behind the veil rose a low, ragged, animal snarl."Traitor."The word rolled across the empty highway. Her eyes blazed above the veil. "Snake. Ungrateful dog. I gave you the black bar. I raised you above every general in my city. I trusted you with the highest position in my administration, and this is how you repay me?""My highest officer vanished the same night the governor was taken. My generals can't reach you. And I find you strolling away from the wreckage, without a scratch on you."Jack's reply was precise and immediate. "You've got it wrong.""Don't lie to me! You aided terrorists in my own backyard! You tried toppling my administration through them!""I aided nobody," Jack said calmly. "And since we're
082 The Salute
The highway lay quiet under the returning stars, cracked and gouged where the Black Witch had stood.Jack pressed on alone, hands in his pockets. Behind him the crater still smoked. That claw had hit with the strength of a hundred men, maybe more. In all his years in the underworld, nothing had ever pushed him back a single step. The Black Witch had driven him a good distance down the highway. That alone made her worth remembering and being cautious of. How did Morgana become so strong? Was she even human? Why did his father never warn him about her powers? On Jack's wrist, the second hand of his watch jerked and began to tick again. In his pocket, his phone buzzed. He pulled it out. The screen was cracked and flickering, but it was alive.Whatever Morgana was, her power had choked every machine around her temporarily. He thumbed the cracked screen and dialed Vandrake. The King of Clubs' voice was tight with relief. "Sir! The line went dead. Our people lost your signal. Are you hurt?"
083 Honored Guest
The governor's Sparta residence blazed with light on its hill, and it looked more like a fortress than a home.Secret Service agents in dark suits paced the white marble steps. Around them, an entire regiment of the National Guard had dug in for the night. Armored trucks blocked every road.Dozens of soldiers held the iron gate, and hundreds more patrolled the walls with rifles and dogs. After tonight's attack, nobody was taking chances with the governor's life.Beyond the barricades, a swarm of reporters jostled under the floodlights."Governor Ryker Sullivan survived tonight's terrorist attack in what witnesses are calling a miracle...""Sources say his fiancée, Forbes heiress Juliet Forbes, was also held hostage...""The big question now is whether next week's wedding will go ahead, or be postponed!"Jack walked out of the dark on foot, highway dust still on his boots. Before he reached the gate, two cars purred up the drive behind him. A gleaming black Rolls-Royce Phantom and a si

Ryker's voice boomed out of the captain's phone, loud enough for the whole gate to hear."Captain, do you want to be thrown out of the National Guard tonight? Because I'll do it myself. Not only will I fire you, I'll make sure you can't get a job hauling lumber anywhere in Garrison State!"The captain went pale as paper. His shoulders folded in."Mr. Governor, it was my mistake, sir! I'm so sorry! I'll fix it immediately!"The line went dead. The captain spun around, snapped his heels together and threw Jack a rigid salute.Down the line, rifles swung back to shoulders. One after another, the soldiers at the gate sprang to attention and saluted. The order of the National Guard rippled outward along the walls, and dozens of Guardsmen turned to face the man in the dusty boots and raised their hands to their brows.Under the blazing lights, it looked like an army paying tribute to a single man.Dean and David stood frozen in the flowerbed. Their mouths hung open. Whatever they were tryin
085 The Offer
Jack didn't blink at the governor's revelation.Ryker studied him with his head tilted, the way a cat studies a mouse that refuses to run.He sounded almost disappointed. "Not even a flinch! You don't seem surprised that I know about your real identity. Did you already figure out that I knew?"Jack scoffed."The governor of Garrison State doesn't pick a woman out of the crowd and propose to her by chance," Jack said. "Not when she happens to be my ex-wife. You went after Juliet to get to me."Ryker laughed so loudly it rang down the empty corridor."Yes, of course! But I must admit, she's a beautiful woman. The perfect bride. She'd have lasted a month, maybe, before I killed her and disposed of the body. That would have been a record. No woman has ever lasted that long with me."Jack's jaw clenched. The Jaguar Cartel committed horrific acts on their captives, and much of it was under their leader's supervision. Ryker Sullivan enjoyed torturing and killing.Somewhere deep in his chest,

The Obsidian Palace was quiet at this hour. The Mayoress was out hunting cartel men through the alleys again, and the guards on Jill's floor dozed at their posts.Jack slipped through the dark corridor and eased open the door to his sister's bedroom. Ryker's morbid offer still rang in his ears, but there was one person he had to see before anything else.Jill lay asleep under a thin white blanket. Her black hair was spread across the pillow, and her face was paler than the sheets. Sweat glistened on her forehead. Her whole body trembled with fever.Jack's chest tightened at the sight."I'm sorry you had to suffer for me."His little sister had spent her whole life in this city without knowing she had a family who never stopped looking for her. The last time he had tried to abduct her and drive home, she had nearly died in his arms at the city border.Jack crossed the room carefully, as if one creaking floorboard could shatter her. Then he bent down and pressed a kiss to her forehead.

Floodlights blazed over the barricade in the old heart of Sparta City. Hundreds of fingers tightened on hundreds of triggers. Then an engine coughed somewhere behind the barricade. It wheezed, banged and sputtered like an old man choking on his soup. Every soldier jerked toward the noise. A few rifles swung away from Jack and pointed into the dark."Is that a lawnmower?" a soldier yelped.A battered scooter rattled out of the shadows. Its headlight blinked on and off, and black smoke puffed from its exhaust with every bang. The rider was a slender young man swimming in a jacket far too big for him. He wrestled with the handlebars while the scooter bucked under him.The engine gave one last ugly bang and died a few feet from Jack's Triumph motorcycle. The sheer contrast between the two vehicles was obvious. The young man hopped off and gave the seat a fond pat.Jack's lips twitched. Only one man in the world would ride into an army on a dying scooter.Brakus's cheeks puffed with rage.
088 Diabolic Indeed
The barricade in the old heart of Sparta City still blazed under the floodlights.Brakus clutched his bleeding hand to his chest and sneered at the young man in the oversized jacket."Your precious lord ran off and left you behind, clown. We'll deal with him later.""Jack Hardy won't be back to save you though. When I'm done with you, I'll tie you to my truck by your ankles and drag you through every street in Sparta.""Yeah, yeah, yeah," Vexler retorted, waving his arms as if trying to silence a class full of school children. "But my lesson comes first.""A lesson? From a clown on a scooter? What lesson would that be?"Vexler didn't answer immediately. He strolled back to his dead scooter, humming to himself. A long bundle wrapped in a gray cloth was strapped along its side."Captain, let me put a bullet in him!" a sergeant growled.Brakus raised his good hand to hold his men back. The clown had made a fool of him in front of the whole army, and he wanted to watch him beg first.Vexl

A cold wind rattled the broken shelter of the bus stop.Ashley didn't answer her son. She sat frozen on the bench and stared at the empty road ahead with glassy, unseeing eyes. Tears kept sliding down her cheeks, but she never blinked.Jack's chest tightened. He crossed the cracked pavement in three long strides and knelt in front of her."Mom, what's wrong with you? Why aren't you answering me?"Slowly, she turned her head.Up close, he barely recognized her. Dark shadows sank deep under her eyes. Lines he had never seen cut across her forehead. The woman who had cried happy tears at his wedding seemed to have aged years since then. She looked so sad and worn out that his throat closed up at the sight.Ashley's lips trembled for a moment."Jack. You're here."She barely whispered it, and fresh tears spilled down her face."I'm so sorry, sweetheart. This was a mistake. Don't come inside.""Inside where? What are you talking about? Where's Dad?""Your father… Victor… He…"Jack reached
090 Done for Today
Blue light blazed across the ruined lot in front of Morgana's dome. The beam held Jack by the chest. Crackling electricity crawled under his skin and clamped his jaw shut. A second beam lanced out of the dark and seared his shoulder. A third struck his thigh."Target struck. Increasing output."The turrets whirred down together and opened fire again. This time the bullets didn't bounce off. They sparked blue against his skin.Every round bit like a taser. Shocks jolted into him from every direction, and his muscles twitched uncontrollably across his arms and back.Jack gritted his teeth and kept walking. He had marched through gunfire his whole life."Target slowing. Full array engaged."Every emitter in the lot fired at once, and a cage of crisscrossing beams closed around him.His boots dragged through the dirt. Each step took more out of him than the last.Jack clenched his fist. In front of Brakus's army, that same fist had shaken the ground and split the asphalt. Now nothing happ
