The World Trembles
Silence. What type of silence is even heavier than sound. The White Villa, the place of the luxury and calmness, was in ruins. The roof had been ripped open, the walls burnt black and the costly furniture burned to ashes. At the heart of the living room was the body of the Master, the nightmares of the underworld, the one that was now reduced to a mound of meat cooling down on the floor with its head cut off.Alex was sitting on the floor holding Sarah in his arms. His grey coat was dipped in blood--his and theirs. His breathing was in choking gasps. The Soul Crushing Palm had disappeared with the death of the Master, yet his body still smarted as though it had been squashed to death by a tank."Lord..."With a groan came the debris in the entrance.General Talon heaved a piece of concrete off his bosom. He got to his feet, and made his broadsword his crutch. His armour had been bent, his nose was bruised, but he lived. He looked around the room. When he saw the headless corpse his ey
The Council’s Envoy
The lobby of the Dragon temple private hospital was where one usually found refuge of silence and healing. The sunlight penetrated through the glass windows on the floor and the walls, covering marble floors and the costly artworks. There was a soft-soled wearing of shoes, and a fragrance of fresh lilies.CRASH!The calmness was broken immediately. The large revolving glass doors did not merely open, but were beaten off.A huge armored boot came down on the clean white marble and powdered the debris."Secure the perimeter! No one leaves!"A dozen men attacked the lobby. They were by no means typical soldiers. They were giants. They were all at least six and a half feet tall, and were clad in heavy grey tactical armor with the blue badge of the "Global War Council" on the breast of their armor. Their bodies were unnaturally broad, and their muscles were swelling out of the fabric they wore which was reinforced. They had a faint, chemical blue light in their eyes--the mark of genetic en
The Black Market King
"We need a fortress."Alex was on the curb out of the hospital, seeing the black SUV of the escaping Titans vanish into traffic. The sky was in bruises of purple and orange as the sun was setting.Sarah stood beside him. She made no answer, but was gazing at her own hands. Her palm skin was still vibrating with a slight residual warmth on the bullet stop. The Villa is dead, I said, in a low voice. "The Council knows we are here. The Dark Soul Sect knows. The ants in the sewer know even. We can't stay in a hotel. We must have a place down below. And somewhere the law is out of reach.Sarah looked up. Her eyes were brown once more, and they had a newness of sharpness. The terror was dead, in its place, cool and predatory consciousness."Where do we go?" she asked.Alex drew out a burning phone. The number he dialed had not existed in five years. To the one place in the whole city that makes the government scared of me more than it would be scared of me, Alex said.An Hour Later: the Old
The Blood Sect Tournament
The North. It was a country of perpetual winter. Where the wind did not blow, but bit. It tore through the flesh and solidified blood in a couple of seconds. There was a terrific snow-storm and the world had been become a sheet of white blindness. But even in the storm two figures were walking down the street like those in a spring garden. One of them was dressed in a long black coat, and his face was covered by a plain black mask. The other had a white fur-lined robe on, and a white porcelain mask on her face."Black" and "White.""Are you cold?" Alex asked, his voice muffled by the wind.Sarah—now "White" shook her head. "No. The fire inside me... it likes the cold. It feels like it wants to eat it."They topped a swell of crashing ice.Beneath this, hewn straight out of the side of a giant, purple glacier, was a gigantic edifice. The Blood Coliseum. It was old and was constructed in the past by a vanished people. It was now black with red banners. There was a sack of witch-fire bur
The Tournament of Death
"Welcome to the Meat Grinder!"The voice of the announcer was roaring in the icy air, and was echoed by sound-stones in the walls of the ice.The Blood Coliseum was shaking. Ten thousand people--cultivators and murderers and thieves-- shouted out blood. The floor of the arena was a huge circle of frozen rock tinged red by centuries of murder. The prize was on a pedestal of black ice in the middle of it.The Dragon Slayer Sword. It was corroded away, and bound in heavy iron chains, but still underneath the rust it throbbed with a low, wailing heartbeat.Alex was standing in the holding tunnel with his eyes focused on the sword. He could feel its pain. It was waiting for him."The rules are simple!" the announcer called, and it reverberated on the glacier. "One hundred fighters enter. One fighter leaves. Killing is allowed. Maiming is encouraged. The final contestant makes it to the finals!"GROUP A! ENTER!"The iron gates groaned open.Alex--now called "Black"--got out into the blindin
The Dragon Slayer Awakens
"Come to me!"The cry of Alex shook the Blood Coliseum. The rusted mass of iron which constituted the Dragon Slayer Sword screamed back on the black pedestal in the middle of the arena.PING!The chains of iron that connected the blade did not snap, it was vaporized. The sword struck out at the air like a lightning bolt made of gold. It turned round, and through the freezing wind, flew straight at the open hand of Alex.THWACK.Alex caught the hilt. With one touch of his skin on the leather grip a shiver of golden energy went rolling away.BOOM!The rusty-corrosive thicker than ever layer which had been coating the blade in the past decade snapped off in a second. It flew off like dust in a hurricane, and showing the real character beneath, it did so.It was magnificent. A rope of Dragon Steel of four feet length, and with a light of shining golden warmth. The metal sang like an angel choir--or demon choir, as was the bearer.Oh, old friend, I said to myself, and touched the old weigh
Dragon vs. Dragon
"WHO... DISTURBS... MY... SLUMBER?"The Ancient Ice Dragon did not wait to be answered. It unclenched its huge jaws and showed lines of crystal-swording teeth.HUUUUUUU.It inhaled. The dust in the colosseum was then blown into its mouth, thus forming a vacuum that dragged the rubble on the floor."Run!" Sarah screamed, with her waist in the grasp of Alex.BOOM!The dragon exhaled. It wasn't fire. It was a cone of white, pure frost. "Absolute Zero Breath."Alex jumped to his right and tested his method of movement to the fullest. Just before the breath struck he and Sarah were rolling behind a huge piece of the fallen wall of the arena.CRACKLE.The sound was terrifying. The sound of physics breaking was it.The position they had held a moment ago did not simply freeze; it was no more. The air was transformed to solid ice crystals. The body of the Blood Sect Leader that was on the ground did not rot--it disintegrated into a million blinking diamonds.Like a cold wave swept over the ro
The Guardian's Test
"Prove you are worthy."The voice of Glacia was like a diamond cutting glass. She was standing in the remains of the Blood Coliseum to which the transparent Dragon Slayer Sword lay gently in her hand. The air was so cold that the snow she had fallen upon had been frozen in mid-flight forming an ice-curtain of floating crystals.Alex defended himself, and his breath smoked greatly. I did not go here to play games, he said, and his hand was close to his waist where a combat knife was sheathed. "I came for my sword.""Your sword?" Glacia laughed softly. It was a chilling sound. "Boy, this blade is my fang. I lost it ten thousand years ago to heal the Rift of the Void. The tip of the sword she was pointing on the dead body of the Blood Sect Leader.Do you believe that this insect was the danger? The Blood Sect? The Council? They are nothing. Symptoms of a disease."She looked up at the grey sky."The Void is opening. Here comes the Darkness which devours stars. I woke up because I smelled
The Return of the King
The Underground City: The Entrance. The situation was critical. The entrance to the Underground City was a secret door which, though unseen by outsiders, had now been enclosed by a fringe of steel. There were also 50 tanks of the class of Titan, in a semi-circle, and with their cannons pointed towards the barred blast doors. In the sky, thousands of black attack helicopters were circling round as vultures.General "Iron" Graves stood on the deck of the mobile Command Carrier. That was a man who did not subscribe to cultivation; he believed in firepower. He was in a sharp uniform with medals of the wars which were not official."Status report!" Graves barked into his radio."Sir! The Spirit-Damping Gas pumps are 80 percent pressure! a technician replied. Pumping the gas into the ventilation shafts. Within ten minutes, all cultivators there in that hole will be deprived of their Qi. They will play as weak, as kittens.Graves grinned. "Excellent. The Underground City is desired to be cle
The Void Rift Opens
"Victory!"The scream was in the Dragon Guards. Flung in the air behind them their helmets, with shouts of joy as the last of the armored transports of the Council ran away into the open, their tires screaming on the asphalt.Alex was approached by General Talon, who was limping on with a broad smile on his blooded face. "We did it, Lord! We drove them away, like whipped dogs! The Underground City is safe!"Alex was on the wreckage of the Command Carrier and the dust was settling. Sarah was standing beside him, her hands still hot with the flash of Phoenix fire. But Alex didn't smile. He gazed down at the great Ice Dragon which was wrapped about the debris."Glacia," Alex said. "Why aren't you celebrating?"The huge head of the dragon was turned towards the sky. Her crystalline blue eyes became narrow. The temperature in her vicinity plummeted considerably, and the puddles of the melted steel were frozen on the ground.Glacia was speaking in their heads, and said: DO NOT CELEBRate YET
