Countersued
The room fell completely silent as every board member looked at Caro in confusion.Marcus moved around the table, his expression clouded with fear. "Caro. Tell me what just happened. Now!"Caro looked up at her father, her eyes glassy, her lips trembling."The law firm," she whispered. "They were bought out. They withdrew from my case."Marcus blinked in surprise. "Bought out? By whom?"Caro swallowed hard. "ABC Holdings. They're the same company that bought the television studio I was suing."Marcus's face lost all its color. "What?""And now," Caro said, her voice cracking, "they're countersuing me for $100 million."Marcus looked at her as if he had lost his mind. For a long, terrible moment, he didn't move, or speak, or even breathe.Suddenly, his legs gave out, and he sank into the nearest chair, his face as pale as ash.Marcus looked up at his daughter, and for the first time in his life, there was real fear in his eyes."How?" he whispered. "How did this happen? Bruce doesn't h
A desperate mistake
Outside The Black Orchid, Bruce pulled his gray sedan up to the valet stand. A young valet in a crisp uniform approached with a frown on his face as he accessed the car with one glance. Unlike the luxurious cars he was used to parking, Bruce sedan was a modest 2018 Toyota Camry with a small dent on the passenger door. Not the type of car that graces this establishment."This?" the valet asked, gesturing at the Camry with disgust. "This is your car?""Yup," Bruce stepped out, tossing the keys toward the valet. "Please treat her with care."The valet made no move to catch them. Instead, he let the keys clatter on the pavement. The valet crossed his arms. "Just who do you think you are, pal? This is The Black Orchid. We don't park junk here."Bruce regarded him calmly. "I'm here on business.""Business?" The valet laughed. "In that? Look, buddy, this restaurant is for elites and businessmen. Not commoners like you who probably can't afford a glass of water inside."Bruce bent down, pic
Landlord
Victoria and Jonathan watched while the Griffins got into their car and drove off from the restaurant. The moment the Griffins were gone, the smiles on the two representatives for ABC Holdings vanished.Jonathan rose from his seat, tucking the folder under his arm, and together they crossed to the next private dining room.Bruce sat alone inside, stirring a glass of wine in his hand. He didn't turn when they entered; instead, he straightened up.Jonathan and Victoria approached the table together and bowed respectfully before him. "Chairman," Jonathan murmured. "It is done. Marcus signed the contract."Bruce's lips curved gently. He slowly sipped the wine, savoring its taste, then set the glass down."Sit," he requested. "Tell me everything."Jonathan and Victoria sat down in the chairs opposite him. "Marcus Griffin signed without asking a single question about the clause of the contract," Jonathan said as he placed the signed contract on the table between them. Victoria nodded. "
Late payment
The landlord's eyes narrowed as he looked Bruce up and down, taking in his plain clothes, the worn shoes, and the modest car parked behind him. A sneer curled his lips. "Why you asking?" he spat. "You want to pay for her?"Bruce held the photograph carefully, his thumb brushing over the cracked glass. "Yes. She seems to be in a tough position right now after losing her job. I'll cover the debt she owes until she gets back on her feet."The landlord stared at him for a moment. Then he threw his head back and laughed. The two goons joined in, laughing mockingly at Bruce."You?" The landlord wiped his eyes, still chuckling. "You're going to pay? With what? Your Uber job?" He gestured at the gray Camry parked behind Bruce. "I saw you pull up in that heap of junk. You think you got what it takes to cover what she owes?"Bruce's expression didn't change. "How much does she owe?"The landlord crossed his arms, his smirk widening. "Well, since you're feeling like a billionaire, I'll tell y
New landlord
The landlord laughed harshly after hearing Bruce's words."You're crazy," he said, shaking his head. "You think I'm going to grovel? For some broke single mother? I'll do no such thing."Bruce shrugged his shoulders. "Very well."He turned to the two goons. They stood with their arms crossed, ready to carry out their employer's orders.Bruce looked at them calmly. "How does half a million dollars sound to both of you? If you beat the shit out of the landlord, each of you will get $500,000."The goons stared at Bruce as if he had grown a second head. The laughter died on the landlord's face as he froze at the mention of the money."What did you just say?" the larger goon asked, his brow furrowing.Bruce repeated himself. "You get $500,000 each. Right now, directly into your accounts. All you have to do is teach this man a lesson about hitting his tenants."The goons shared a glance. The smaller one let out a nervous laugh. "You're insane, pal. You don't have that kind of money. You dri
Scarlett plot
When Marcus and Caro got back home, it was already late at night."You're making a mistake," Caro said as they pulled up the driveway of the Griffin estate. "Signing that deal. It's going to cost us."Marcus stopped his car in front of the main mansion. "What makes you say that?"Caro leaned in. "I don't trust these people, Dad. ABC Holdings came out of nowhere. One minute they're suing us, and the next they're offering us the deal of a lifetime. It just doesn't add up.""It's good enough for me," Marcus said as he stepped out of the car and walked up the steps. Caro hurried after him. She reached out and grabbed his arm, forcing him to slow down. "You should have taken more time and done further research."Marcus stopped and turned to face her, his expression hard. "You read the contract with me. The documents and the financial records. They're legit, aren't they?"Caro hesitated. "Yes, they look legitimate."Marcus folded his arms. "They have government contracts, don't they?""The
The set up
The next morning, Bruce stood before the small bathroom mirror, adjusting the collar of his plain button-down shirt. He was just reaching for his keys when the doorbell rang.Bruce crossed the small living room and opened the door. He found Lucy at the doorway, her hands folded in front of her. She had changed into a clean blouse and jeans, her hair brushed back from her face. The dark circles under her eyes were still there, but she looked better than she did last night. "Lucy," Bruce said, leaning against the doorframe. "You're up early."She smiled nervously, "I wanted to thank you. Again. I don't know how to repay you. What you did last night, no one has ever done that for me before." Bruce gently shook his head. "Lucy, we talked about this yesterday. There's no need for you to pay me back. Just try to get back on your feet, alright? That's all I ask."She nodded quickly, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand. "I will. I promise." She took a steadying breath. "I'm going
Busted
Bruce quickly backed away, his eyes widening as he understood what she was doing. The torn fabric hung from her shoulders, exposing her brassier. Before he could react, she lunged forward, grabbing his wrist with surprising strength. Her fingers wrapped around his hand and pressed it firmly against her bare breast, squeezing his fingers around the soft flesh so his fingerprints would be imprinted on her skin."There," she hissed, her breath hot against his face. "Now you're trapped here with me, Bruce."Bruce couldn't believe Scarlett would go to such length. Was she really this desperate to destroy his life?"This is your end," Scarlett laughed wickedly. "I have your fingerprints on me. Your DNA will be everywhere. The court will believe my story over yours. A struggling Uber driver against a Hollywood actress? You're finished."Bruce looked down at his hand resting on her chest, then back at her face. His expression remained surprisingly calm."So, this is your plan?" he asked. "T
Scarlett grovels
"No," Scarlett’s voice trembled as she shook her head violently. "No. It's not possible. You cannot be Bruce Dominic Shepherd. I refuse to believe it. I refuse!"Bruce regarded her indifferently, as if her doubts meant nothing to him."I have nothing to prove to you, Scarlett," he said quietly. "You are the least of my concerns. My beef is with the Griffin family. Not with you. You're not even worth my time nor my effort."Scarlett swallowed hard, her mind spinning. The man she had just tried to frame for sexual assault was the richest person on earth."Wait," she said, her voice cracking. "Let me get this straight. You're actually Bruce Dominic Shepherd? How? Last I checked, you were a nobody. You lived off my daughter's money. You couldn't even afford a doormat!"Bruce's eyes hardened. "I'm not going to bore you with the history of how it happened. You don't deserve an explanation." He stepped closer, his eyes narrowing into sharp slits. "But I am going to make you suffer for what y
Trapped
Bruce looked down at Scarlett as she crumpled at his feet, her tears soaking into the floorboards.Watching her grovel and seeing her body tremble with genuine terror made his heart race with excitement. It felt so good to have control and power over his former mother-in-law. To crush her pride and force her down to her knees. He had her right where he wanted her. It would have been easier to crush her to dust, but Bruce was thinking about the long term. Now that he had her in the palm of his hands, he could use her however he wants. He crouched down, bringing himself to her level. Scarlett flinched, expecting another slap. Instead, Bruce reached out and gently tilted her chin upward, forcing her tear-streaked face to meet his eyes."Look at me, Scarlett."She obeyed, her breath trembling. In a quiet voice, he said, "I'm not going to destroy you."Her eyes grew wide with hope. "You're not?""No. Not yet." He released her chin and stood, looking down at her with the same cold detachm
