301 - What Did I Walk Into?
Mei Ling's office. Nine forty-seven PM.Tommy had been there for about an hour. He was sitting against the wall with a bowl of whatever he'd made earlier, the artificial Heart sitting quiet under his shirt, when it shifted. He looked up."Mei Ling," he said."Working," Mei Ling said."Something's different."Mei Ling looked at him. Looked at her screen. Her hands moved fast across the keyboard."Lily's pendant frequency spiked," she said. "About twenty minutes ago."Tommy put his bowl down. "How?""The way it spikes when Lily's actively managing it," Mei Ling said. "But she hasn't moved from her office all evening. Her badge hasn't pinged anywhere. Nothing external triggered it." She turned the second screen toward him. "Look at the shape of the spike."Tommy looked at it. He didn't read frequency data the way Mei Ling did but the artificial Heart was responding to what was on the screen and that told him what he needed to know."She chose to do it," Tommy said."Yes," Mei Ling said.
302 - Case Sensitive
"Lily can feel a sensitive from across the building without equipment," Tommy said.Elijah looked at Lily. Then at Rael. "Is that supposed to happen?""We covered that," Tommy said."Right," Elijah said. He came fully into the room and leaned against the wall. "Carry on.""Sora," Jake said.Sora was already looking at Lily. "Walk us through it from the beginning. Don't summarize."Lily looked at the pendant in her hand. "I was at my desk," she said. "Reading the northern Europe outreach schedule. Nothing sensitive-related. Just a document." She paused. "And then the pendant got warm. The way it gets when something's happening through it.""Like during the forty-eight hours," Sora said."Exactly like that," Lily said. "But the seventh's frequency has a specific quality to it. Heavy. Old. This was different. Cleaner. Like someone doing something for the first time.""Instinctive," Rael said. "Without knowing what they were doing.""Yes," Lily said. "And then I realized I could feel the
303 - She Went Dark On Us
"She's one of ours," Yemi said. "She's an Architect. She's been missing for eleven years and she just woke up."Nobody moved.Jake looked at Rael. Rael was looking at the screen and not at anyone in the room."Yemi," Jake said. "We need the full call. Everyone. Conference room. Twenty minutes.""I'll have Kofi and Amara with me," Yemi said. "Twenty minutes."The call ended.Jake looked at the room. At Lily still holding the pendant. At Tommy with his hand on his chest. At Elijah standing with his arms crossed doing the math on what he'd just heard."Conference room," Jake said. "All of us. Now."***Twenty minutes later.Yemi, Kofi, and Amara on the main screen. Hana, Kenji, and Yuna on the secondary screen from Tokyo, Hana already running something on a laptop off to the side. Jake's full team around the table. Rael standing at the front.Yemi looked at Lily first. "Tell me exactly what you felt. From the beginning.""I already told you on the phone," Lily said."Tell me again," Yemi
304 - I Found Her
"She wanted the Heart system stabilized," Rael said. "She could see where it was heading. She understood that the energy being distributed across multiple wielders was building toward something unstable. She believed the only real solution was for one person to carry all of them simultaneously and form a permanent containment structure." She looked at Jake. "She was right about the solution. She was wrong about the method of forcing it to happen."Jake looked at his hands. At the four Hearts sitting inside him. "She wanted what I am.""She wanted what you became," Rael said. "Three thousand years later. On its own. Without the method she chose." She paused. "She's going to have a great deal to say about that."Elijah, from across the room: "Can I ask something?""Yes," Jake said."When we open the channel," Elijah said. "First conversation with someone who's been sealed for three thousand years. What do you actually say? What's the opening line?"Jake thought about it. "I have no idea
305 - It's Not Funny
Conference room. Nine AM.Everyone present. Hana back on screen from the coastal town two hours north of Tokyo, slightly damp from what looked like early morning rain. The kind of tired that meant she'd been awake since Jake told her to go.The weight of what Hana had said the night before was still in the room. Nobody had quite let it go.Tommy spoke first. "A fourteen-year-old," he said. "Fully developed Architect sensitivity. Developed on its own. Without training. Without guidance. Without even knowing what it was.""That's what Lily did," Elijah said."Lily is twenty-eight," Tommy said. "This child is fourteen."Elijah looked at Tommy. Then at Rael. "Is that supposed to be possible? A fourteen-year-old with fully developed sensitivity that nobody trained?""It shouldn't be," Rael said. "Not at that age. The original Architects who developed sensitivity naturally still needed years of deliberate cultivation before it reached this level." She paused. "Lily developed faster than exp
306 - What Do You Mean Another Wielder?!
"I don't know," Hana said. "The house is quiet. Both signals are present. Neither has moved since I got here.""They're waiting," Lily said."Yes," Jake said. "They are." He looked at the room. "We go to Japan. Me, Elijah, and Lily. Hana coordinates from the town. We approach Nadia first. Lily's frequency is the best introduction we have.""Why Lily specifically?" Elijah said."Because the child activated toward Lily," Rael said. "Whatever the child felt that made them push through Nadia's containment was Lily's frequency in the environment. Taking Lily there is the clearest message we can send that we found them because of the child and not because something else tracked them.""We tell them it's safe without saying it's safe," Tommy said. "We show it.""Yes," Rael said."When do we go?" Lily said."Tomorrow morning," Jake said. "Harrison books flights tonight. Hana holds position and stays invisible until we l
307 - The Watcher
That night.Mei Ling had three screens running and the description Jake and Sora had given her spread across all of them. Security footage from every external camera the building had. She'd been at it for forty minutes when Jake came to stand behind her and look at what she'd found."She knows where the cameras are," Mei Ling said. She pulled up a map of the building exterior with the camera coverage zones marked. Then she overlaid the woman's movement pattern from the footage. "Watch how she moves. Every time she repositions she stays just inside the edge of the coverage zone. Never steps into a blind spot in a way that would trigger the motion anomaly alert. Never stays in one camera's frame long enough to get flagged by the duration tracker.""She mapped our system," Jake said."She mapped our system," Mei Ling said. "That takes time. You don't do that in a day.""How long?" Jake said."Based on what the footage can confirm," Mei Ling said, "at least two weeks. Probably longer. The

The room was quiet for a moment.Jake looked at the photograph on the screen. At the woman in the back row of a 1931 Berlin conference photo who looked exactly like the woman who had made direct eye contact with him on a street corner two hours ago.'She knows who it is,' the Whisperer said.'Obviously she knows,' Jake thought. 'That's the most Rael response possible to finding out someone you recognize is outside your building.''Are you going to talk to her tonight?' the Whisperer said.'No,' Jake thought. 'She's not picking up. And I need to think first.'He looked at the room. At everyone still there waiting."Go home," Jake said. "Six AM tomorrow. All of it can wait until six AM."Nobody argued. They knew the tone.Jake went home.He didn't sleep much.***Six AM. Third floor corridor.Rael's office door was closed. Jake knocked once and opened it.She was at her desk. She'd been there for a while. The lamp on. The photograph still open on her screen. She looked at Jake when he c

The park two blocks from Titan was quiet at eight AM. Dog walkers. A few joggers. The specific low-population morning version of a public space before the city fully woke up.Tommy had given them a direction at six-thirty. North-northwest from the building. Within walking distance. Stationary.Jake walked north. Elijah walked beside him."What's the plan?" Elijah said."Find her. Talk to her," Jake said."That's not a plan," Elijah said. "That's a goal.""What's the difference?" Jake said."A plan has steps," Elijah said. "Find her. Talk to her. That's two steps. What happens between find and talk? What if she doesn't want to talk? What if she's been watching this building for fourteen months and now that we're approaching she decides she's not ready?""Then we have a conversation about why she's not ready," Jake said."That's still just talking," Elijah said."Elijah," Jake said."I'm asking legitimate questions," Elijah said. "She's three thousand years old. She survived everything
310 - What Do You Want?
They walked back. The city was properly awake. Morning traffic. Someone with a coffee cart on the corner doing good business. Normal Tuesday things happening completely unaware of a three-thousand-year-old wielder who had just stood up from a park bench and walked away.Elijah was quiet until they reached the lobby doors. Then: "She said Sora needs to be in the room.""Yes," Jake said."Did she explain why?" Elijah said."She said I'd understand before we open the channel," Jake said.Elijah held the door. "That's an answer that sounds like an answer but isn't actually an answer.""I know," Jake said."Are you going to tell Sora?" Elijah said."Today," Jake said."Good," Elijah said. "Because Sora is going to want more than I'd understand before we open it.""I know that too," Jake said.***Jake found Sora in her office at eleven. She was in the middle of something but she looked up when he knocked and closed her laptop before he sat down."Tell me about the park," she said.Jake tol
