Combat
A murmur spread through the students.John noticed it.He looked at Reyan carefully."Interesting."Reyan raised his guard again.John didn't attack.Instead, he walked around him slowly."Your pain tolerance is unusually high."Reyan remained silent."Your recovery is also faster than normal. That impact should have affected your shoulder for longer."He stopped in front of Reyan."And your endurance..."John's eyes moved over him."...is abnormal."Reyan didn't answer.John's voice became slightly more serious."You've been relying on your body for a long time, haven't you?"Reyan thought about it."Yes."John nodded."I thought so."He pointed toward Reyan's feet."Your body is strong. Your reactions aren't bad either. But your technique is terrible."A few students tried not to smile.Jordan failed. He covered his mouth.Dev quietly elbowed him.John ignored them."Do you know why you couldn't touch me?"Reyan looked at him."You're more experienced.""That's part of it."John tap
Theory
Jordan was already regretting losing the rock-paper-scissors match. He stood outside the Theory classroom with a few dozen other first-year students, staring at the door like it had personally betrayed him."This is your fault," Jordan said.Dev looked at him. "How exactly?""You suggested the game.""I suggested that we use something fair.""You could have suggested anything else.""You agreed.""I was confident."Dev gave him a flat look. "That's not my problem."Reyan stood beside them, holding the wooden sword Instructor Weels had given him the previous day. He had barely spoken since leaving the Weapon & Combat hall.Jordan looked at him."At least Reyan got Combat."Reyan glanced at him. "You lost.""I know I lost. You don't have to remind me."The classroom door opened before the argument could continue.A woman in a dark Academy uniform stepped outside."First-year Theory students. Come in."Jordan sighed."Here goes my exciting military career."The classroom was much more no
Ability Class
The Ability Class was held in a smaller building on the eastern side of the Academy.Unlike the Weapon & Combat hall, there were no racks of weapons or large training circles. The room was divided into several separate testing areas, each surrounded by transparent barriers. Some had metal targets hanging from the ceiling. Others contained machines covered in sensors and glowing lines.Dev stood near the entrance with his hands in his pockets, looking around."So this is where they tell us why we're special," Jordan said.Dev glanced at him. "They'll probably tell you why you're a problem.""That's basically the same thing.""It really isn't."Reyan wasn't with them today. His schedule had placed him in another class, leaving Dev and Jordan to attend Ability Class together.A few more students entered, and soon the room was filled.A woman in her late thirties walked to the front. She had short brown hair and wore a simple Academy uniform with a tablet in one hand."I'm Instructor Elen
Weapon Forging
The smell hit Reyan before he even entered the classroom. It was a mixture of hot metal, coal, and something sharp that reminded him of burning wires. He stopped near the entrance for a moment, looking through the open doors at the room beyond. Unlike the other classrooms in the Academy, this one was filled with workbenches, heavy machines, metal racks, and several large furnaces built into the far wall. Pipes ran along the ceiling, carrying heat away from the working areas, while small lights flashed on the control panels beside each station.Jordan walked past him and immediately covered his nose."Tell me we're not supposed to spend the entire class in here. I can already smell my eyebrows burning."Dev looked at him. "Your eyebrows will survive. I'm more worried about your brain.""What's that supposed to mean?""It means you should probably keep your head away from the furnaces."Jordan gave him an offended look, but Reyan had already started walking inside. There were fewer stud
The First Planet
The announcement came during the morning assembly, just when Jordan had started wondering whether he could skip the rest of the day without anyone noticing. He was sitting between Dev and Reyan in the main hall of House Vanguard, leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed. The three had arrived early enough to get seats near the front, which Jordan now considered a terrible decision. Students who arrived late were still entering through the doors, and he had already seen several people heading toward the back rows with food in their hands."Next time, we're sitting at the back," Jordan whispered. "I don't care if we have to stand."Dev glanced at him. "You said that yesterday, and then you spent ten minutes arguing about which seat had the best view.""Because the best view is important.""You're attending an assembly, not watching a movie."Jordan opened his mouth to answer, but the lights above the stage dimmed, and the conversations around them slowly died.An Academy officer
Departure
The Academy grounds were busier than usual that morning.Military vehicles stood in long rows outside the main transport building, their engines humming while staff members checked equipment and called out names. First-year students gathered in their assigned groups, carrying bags that looked far less impressive than the weapons strapped to their backs. Some were excited about leaving Earth for the first time, while others kept checking their equipment as if they expected something to go wrong before they even reached the transport area.Jordan was doing both."Tell me again why they gave us so much stuff," he said, struggling to close the straps on his backpack. "I've got medical supplies, food packs, a water filter, a communication device, spare clothes, and something they called an emergency shelter. At this point, I think they're sending us to live in the forest permanently."Dev looked over his shoulder. "You're carrying half your equipment in the wrong pockets. That's why your b
The Village
The first thing Jordan noticed about the village was that nobody seemed happy to see them.He had expected people to come out of their houses, thank the Academy for sending help, and perhaps offer them something to eat. Instead, most villagers watched the students from their doorways with worried faces. A few whispered among themselves, while others returned to their work without saying anything.A little boy stood beside an old woman near the village well. He stared at the weapons carried by the students until the woman pulled him closer and told him to stop looking.Jordan watched them for a moment before turning to Dev. "I thought people would be excited to see us.""They probably are," Dev replied. "They're just waiting to find out whether we're actually useful.""That's a lovely way to welcome someone."Reyan walked ahead of them, studying the village. The buildings were simple, most made from wood and stone, with metal sheets covering their roofs. Some had small gardens surround
First Hunt Part 1
The warning came shortly after breakfast.Reyan was standing near the northern side of the village, checking the straps on his equipment, when a bell rang from the watchtower. It was a rough, unpleasant sound that carried across the fields. A second bell followed, then a third. The villagers stopped what they were doing.A woman carrying a basket hurried toward the nearest house. Two men abandoned a broken cart and ran for the village gate. From the watchtower, a guard shouted something that Reyan couldn't hear clearly, but he understood the meaning when the soldiers began moving.“Arcanes!” someone yelled. “They're coming from the forest!”Reyan looked toward the distant trees. Their dark green tops moved gently in the wind, and for a moment, he saw nothing unusual. Then something emerged from between the trunks. It was low to the ground, roughly the size of a large dog, with four thick legs and a body covered in dark, rough plates. A pale glow shone through the cracks between those
First Hunt Part 2
For several minutes, the area around the northern fence became a mess of shouting, broken wood, fire, and moving bodies. The students were not fighting in neat pairs as they had during their Academy lessons. They stumbled, missed attacks, lost their weapons, and sometimes had to retreat because they had no idea what a creature would do next. One Arcane ignored a student who had injured it and charged toward a wounded soldier instead. Another pretended to retreat before turning around and attacking the person following it. Their behavior was difficult to predict, and their armor made them harder to kill than Reyan had expected. He burned another Arcane after it tried to bite through his shoulder. The creature's jaws closed against his arm, and he used the brief opening to send fire into its mouth. It released him and staggered away, allowing Reyan to finish it with a second attack.By the time the last Arcane fell, Reyan's clothes were torn, his forearm was bleeding, and the air around
The Soul Hunt Part 1
Reyan left the village without telling anyone where he was going. The others were busy helping the guards repair the northern fence and checking the equipment damaged during the attack. Dev had noticed him heading toward the fields, but Reyan had simply said he needed some time alone. It wasn't unusual for him to keep things to himself, so Dev hadn't stopped him. Reyan continued past the broken fence until the village was hidden behind the tall grass. Beyond it stood the forest, its trees growing close together beneath the blue-green sky. Sunlight passed through the leaves in thin patches, lighting up the uneven ground. He stopped near the first trees and looked at the System window. \[Daily Quest: Consume the soul of a hostile ability user.\] \[Time Remaining: 00:36:12\] \[Reward: +100 EXP, +1 Free Stat Point\] \[Failure Penalty: Soul Hunger intensifies.\] The remaining time was a problem.
