CHAPTER 170. OLD SYSTEMS.
First was a man standing at the center of the circle, his posture relaxed but commanding, his hands clasped loosely behind his back. He was older, perhaps in his late fifties, with silver-streaked hair and a face that had been handsome once and was still striking despite the lines that age had carved into it. He wore a simple dark suit, no tie, and his eyes, pale grey, almost colorless, swept across the assembled crowd with the easy confidence of someone who was used to being listened to.The other was Marcus. He stood in the shadows at the far edge of the room, partially concealed by one of the pillars that supported the upper levels, but Zachary recognized him immediately. The posture, the lean frame, the way he held his arms crossed over his chest. Marcus's eerie eyes were fixed on the man in the center, and his expression was unreadable.Zachary lingered at the edge of the room, still half-hidden by the corridor's archway, and watched. The man in the center was speaking, his vo
CHAPTER 171. NEW AGE.
The crowd began to dissolve. People rose from their seats, stretching and murmuring, forming small clusters that drifted toward the exits. Zachary watched them go, cataloging faces, noting who looked at him and who looked away. The woman he had stabbed passed close enough that he could smell her perfume, floral and sharp, and her partner's shoulder brushed against his as they walked by."You're lucky," the woman said, her voice low and venomous. "If Marcus hadn't stopped me, I would have done worse than stick you with a tiny knife."Zachary met her eyes and let his mouth curl into an infuriating smirk, "Next time, aim for something vital." He drawled. Her face redeened immediately and she looked five seconds a way from punching him, orders be damned but her partner pulled her away before she could respond, and Zachary watched them disappear through one of the archways, his heart pounding harder than he wanted to admit. He had not really planned to threaten her but the words had com
CHAPTER 172. ATTACK OF THE FALLEN.
"Why didn't you just approach me directly?" he finally asked, tone hushed. "Why all this? Why not just send a message and ask for a meeting?"Caius sighed, soft and low. "It is because we do not have time for meetings, Young Lord. We do not have weeks or months to spend convincing you to trust us. The conflict is coming faster than we anticipated, and we needed to see what you were capable of. There was debate among our members about whether you would be strong enough to survive what is coming.""Debate," Zachary said flatly. "You debated whether to kidnap me.""We debated whether to approach you at all." Caius's voice was gentle, almost apologetic. "You are new to this world, Young Lord. You have only been aware of your bloodline for a little over a year. Some of our members worried that you would not be ready for what is coming. That you would be more of a liability than an asset."Zachary felt his face heat. "And now? After all this, what do they think?"Caius smiled. "Opinions r
CHAPTER 173. THE LION'S SHADOW.
Morwen's blade caught the fading light as she lunged, and the courtyard, which had been so still and peaceful just moments before, exploded into chaos. The masked figures poured from the tree line like water through a broken dam, their dark clothes and crimson masks turning them into a swarm of shadows against the amber glow of the setting sun. Zachary felt something cold settle into his chest. This was more so very direct and although he had sparred against three and four opponents at once during his training, that had been different. That had been controlled. Safe. There had been mats beneath his feet and handlers watching from the sidelines and Seraphina's voice in his ear telling him where he had gone wrong. This was not training. This was a kill box, and he was standing in the middle of it with two knives still in his arms and his energy reserves scraped raw by the pin dagger's influence.Caius did not flinch. The man who had been so warm and conversational just moments before
CHAPTER 174. TEAR.
In the meantime Morwen hit Caius like a wave crashing against a seawall. She came in fast, her axe already in motion, and the two masked fighters flanking her moved with her, their swords cutting arcs of silver through the amber light. Caius met them with his water blades, the transparent swords flashing as they parried and thrust, and the sound of metal on water was strange, a soft, wet impact followed by a sharp hiss, like rain falling on hot stone.Zachary lost track of the fight almost immediately. It moved too fast, the participants blurring together into a tangle of limbs and blades and desperate, violent motion. He saw Caius block a strike from the left, deflect a thrust from the right, and then Morwen's axe was coming down toward his head and he was forced to give ground, stepping back, his water swords rising to meet the blow. The impact sent a shockwave rippling through the courtyard, and Zachary felt it in his chest, a physical pressure that made his ears pop."Don't jus
CHAPTER 175. THE AMULET.
Across the courtyard, the battle between Caius and Morwen reached its climax.Caius had been masterful in his defense, his water swords moving in patterns that seemed to anticipate every strike, every feint, every attempt to break through his guard. But defense was not victory, and victory was not the same as survival. He was fighting on Morwen's terms, in her rhythm, and he knew it. The knowledge was there in the set of his shoulders, the tightness around his eyes.Morwen pressed her advantage. Her axe came down again and again, each blow heavier than the last, and the two fighters flanking her moved in perfect coordination, cutting off Caius's exits, forcing him to stand his ground or be cut down from the sides. One of them overreached.Caius's water sword moved faster than Zachary's eyes could follow, and the man's arm came off at the elbow, a clean cut, the blade so sharp that the limb seemed to hang in the air for a moment before falling to the stone with a wet, heavy thud.
CHAPTER 176. RECOVERY
Consciousness returned to Zachary in fragments, each one sharper than the last, like pieces of a shattered mirror being pressed back into place one by one.The first thing he became aware of was the soreness, a deep, bone-deep ache that seemed to radiate from every joint and muscle and sinew in his body. He had been sore before, had pushed himself past exhaustion during training on Sanctuary, had woken up on countless mornings feeling like he had been run over by something large and unforgiving. But this was different. This was the kind of soreness that came from having one's body pushed to its absolute limits and then beyond, the kind that whispered promises of long recovery and longer nights. He tried to move his arm and immediately regretted it. A sharp, bright flare of pain shot up from his shoulder, and he heard himself make a sound that was not quite a groan and not quite a gasp, something in between that seemed to sum up his entire situation better than words ever could. The se
CHAPTER 177. IN THE MIDDLE
That meant the amulet was important, important enough to kill for, and the fact that she had been willing to leave without killing him suggested that she had gotten exactly what she wanted. He looked at Marcus again, at the cast on his arm and the bandage on his chest, and felt something twist in his chest. The man had protected him, had stood between him and death more than once during the fight, and he had almost died for it. If Morwen's axe had struck a few inches higher, if the back of the blade had caught Marcus's throat instead of his chest, they would be having a very different conversation right now."Why did he do it?" Zachary asked, and he was not sure if he was speaking to the woman or to himself. "Why did he protect me? He barely knows me. We were fighting each other an hour before she showed up."The woman was quiet for a moment, and when she spoke, her voice was softer than before. "Marcus believes in what we are trying to build. He believes that you are essential to
CHAPTER 178. EQUAL MEASURE
Zachary turned toward the door, then stopped. There was something he needed to say, something that had been sitting in his chest since he woke up, and he knew that if he did not say it now, he probably never would."I'm not going to apologize," he said, and he did not have to specify what he was apologizing for. They both knew. "For what I did to you. For stabbing you. I'm not sorry."Sey's expression did not change. "I did not expect you to.""You were going to use that awful thing on me. My instincts were right.""They were." She touched her stomach, where the bandages were hidden beneath her shirt, and something flickered across her face. "I do not blame you for defending yourself. I would have done the same in your position."Zachary stared at her, searching for the lie, the angle, the hidden meaning behind her words. He found nothing. Just a woman who had tried to hurt him and been hurt in return, who was now standing in front of him with no apparent resentment and no desire fo
CHAPTER 179. THE ROAD BACK
It was another vehicle, parked sideways across the road, its engine off, its lights dark. It was impossible to see who was inside, impossible to tell if it was friend or enemy, and Zachary's hand moved instinctively toward the door handle, ready to fight or flee depending on what emerged. He honked the horn. HONK!!The sound was loud in the quiet night, sharp and demanding, and it echoed off the trees on either side of the road. The vehicle did not move.He honked again, longer this time, and still nothing. The car sat there, dark and silent, blocking his path with no indication that anyone was inside."Now what?" Zachary muttered to himself, his voice tight with frustration. He was about to put the car in reverse, to back up and find another way around, when the driver's door of the blocking vehicle opened.A figure stepped out.The headlights caught her face, pale and familiar, and Zachary felt his heart stop.Seraphina.She was dressed in dark clothes, her hair pulled back in a s
