The structural minimum reached ninety-seven point four before anyone thought to note the decimal. Sabine saw the figure only after the instruments had already absorbed it into the continuous record. The ascent no longer presented itself as progress toward a limit. It presented itself as the progressive erasure of the idea that a limit had ever been required. She did not record the new value as an event. She wrote: the floor rises by the amount required to make the previous floor unremarkable.Iris arrived without paper. She stood for a time in the center of the room, then said, “The contours have stopped overlapping. They have begun to occupy the same coordinates.”Sabine waited.“The restored material and the discarded material no longer require separate description. What remains is a single surface whose density is determined by the degree to which attention consents to remain incomplete.”Pavel, still near the window, spoke without turning. “Then the instruments are no longer parti

The sixteenth month began without a beginning.Sabine discovered this only because the date remained printed at the top of the morning report. The instruments had not marked the transition. Neither had the correspondence, the studio, or the field that had gradually made distinctions between these things unnecessary. She read the first line twice.“Structural minimum: ninety-eight point six.”Iris stood beside the instrument cabinet. “There was no intermediate record.”“There was.”“No,” Iris said. “There was an interval in which the record would previously have described itself as intermediate. That distinction no longer survives.”Sabine closed the report.Pavel was already at the window. “The increase is becoming irrelevant.”“Then why record it?”“Because the instruments still possess enough residue of their former function to produce a number.”Sabine looked toward him. “And when that residue disappears?”“The number will not disappear. Our reason for calling it a number will.”No

The continuation did not announce itself.Sabine remained seated long after the others had shifted their positions in the room. The closed journal lay on the table exactly where she had left it. No one reopened it. The depth inside the covers required no further verification. It simply persisted, continuous with the floor, continuous with the residual numbers still faintly visible behind the glass of the instrument cabinet, continuous with the faint vibration that no longer needed a source.Pavel stood near the window. The glass had ceased to function as a boundary in any reliable sense. What passed on the street below—vehicles, footsteps, the intermittent sound of voices—entered the room without crossing a threshold. The distinction between outside and inside had become another residual habit, like the numbers the instruments continued to display.Iris kept her hand against the wall for a time that could no longer be measured by the old methods. When she finally lowered it, the wall
