Chapter 141. Amends
Saul leaned forward, scanning the list. The names meant nothing to him, but the pattern was unmistakable. "Someone's been funding the kidnappings. Using the stolen money from the company.""It looks that way." Kim rubbed her eyes with the heels of her hands. "I can't prove it yet. The connections are circumstantial. But the timing is too consistent to be coincidence." She dropped her hands and looked at him, and for a moment, the mask slipped. He saw the exhaustion underneath, the grief, the desperate hope she was trying so hard to contain. "We need to talk to Cross. She has access to the official investigation. She'll know when the kidnappings started, who the first victims were, how the pattern evolved. We have pieces, Saul. We have so many pieces! But we need context to make them fit."Saul nodded. "We agreed we'd reach out to her in the morning. It's morning now.""It's morning," Kim echoed. She looked down at the notebooks scattered around her, at the hours of work she had pou
Chapter 142. Beeak Fast.
At the sight Infront of her she couldn't help but stop in her tracks right there at the doorway, her eyes going wide.Saul was standing at the stove with his back to her. He had rolled up the sleeves of his sweater to his elbows, exposing forearms she had once known as well as her own. A dish towel was slung over his shoulder, and he was moving a spatula through a pan of eggs with the careful, slightly hesitant motions of someone who had learned to cook from instructions rather than instinct. The toaster popped behind him, and he turned to retrieve the slices, balancing them on a plate with ease. And placed on an already set table. It was not the formal dining table in the other room, but the small breakfast table in the corner of the kitchen, the one she used when she needed to cook something quick. He had set two plates, two forks and two mugs of coffee, one black, one with a carton of cream waiting beside it. A small vase held a single purple flower from the garden, the kind
Chapter 143. The Hour Before.
"I was just thinking." She cleared her throat and walked into the kitchen, her bare feet cool against the tile floor. Edging closer she let her eyes linger on the plates of food."You…. made breakfast.""Eggs. Toast. Coffee." He gestured at the table with the spatula, a small, almost sheepish motion. "I wasn't sure how you liked your eggs, so I went with scrambled. That seemed like the safest option.""Scrambled is fine." She pulled out a chair and sat down. The flower in the vase caught the morning light, its petals a deep, bruised purple. "Scrambled is what I always eat." She murmured flippantly but saul gave her a slightly relieved look all the same."Good." He slid a portion of eggs onto a plate and set it in front of her. "Because I don't actually know how to make them any other way."Kim nodded, mind still distant.Tentatively, she picked up her fork and took a small bite. The eggs were perfect. Fluffy and golden, seasoned with something she could not quite identify. She took
Chapter 144. Cross.
"Fine," he sighed, his hands tightened briefly before releasing her, “I won't let you oversleep Kim,” He promised and he meant it.Head bowing in acquiescence, Kim slowly lowered herself onto the sofa. Her body sank into the cushions with a heaviness that surprised her, her muscles finally surrendering after days of being held taut against an enemy she could not see. She turned her head into the throw pillow and let out a breath that seemed to come from somewhere deeper than her lungs. The morning light fell across the floor in warm rectangles and it gave everything a softer more lulling mood….. she couldn't help but bask in it as her eyes closed, fluttered open once, then closed again. Between one breath and the next, she was gone.Saul stood over her, his hands at his sides, watching the tension drain from her face. Her jaw, which had been locked tight since the hospital, went slack. Her shoulders, which had been squared like she was bracing for impact, relaxed into the cushion
Chapter 145. Location
Saul's jaw tightened. He looked toward the living room again, toward the sofa where Kim lay buried under the cream duvet, her breathing still deep and even. This was not his home. It was hers. And she was asleep, completely unaware that he was about to invite a police detective through her front door. She might not want Cross here. She might wake up, still groggy and disoriented, and find a stranger in her living room asking questions she was not prepared to answer. She might look at him the way she had looked at him last night, after he had told her about Veronica. (and a small part of him was not sure he would be able to handle that again so soon.)But the alternative was leaving her alone to meet Cross somewhere else, and that was worse."Fine," he said, and the word came out rougher than he intended. "I'll send you the address of somewhere we can meet up. How long?""Soon."The line went dead before he could respond. He lowered the phone and set it on the counter, staring at
Chapter 146. Worth It.
The drive to his building was quiet. Kim sat in the passenger seat with her hands folded in her lap, her eyes fixed on the window, watching the city slide past in a blur of gray and greens. Saul kept his hands on the wheel and his attention on the road, but every few minutes he glanced at her, checking for signs that she was still angry, still distant, still holding onto whatever had passed between them the night before. Her expression gave nothing away. His phone buzzed in the cupholder. He glanced at the screen and saw Cross's name. Again."She's called three times already," he grumbled, even as he forced his eyes to stay on the road."Are you going to answer?" Kim asked boredly, barely flicking her eye to him. Saul made an indignant noise in his throat."I'm driving! You can answer if you want."Sighing through her nose, Kim picked up the phone and stared at the screen for a moment, put it on do not disturb, then set it back down without answering. "You can call her back when we
Chapter 147. Coming Together.
Kim's pen stopped moving as soon as the words landed and her jaw tightened, the muscle flexing beneath her skin. Saul saw her take a breath and hold it, saw her shoulders rise and then fall with deliberate control. Kim was steadying herself from lashing out at the other woman, and it was taking everything she had not to at cross's condescending tone.Trying to descalate the situation, heleaned forward, interrupting Kim before she could speak. "It's worth your time," he drawled, eyes meeting the detective's with defiance. "But it's going to take a minute to lay it all out. So if you're quite done being in a hurry, we'll tell you what we know."Cross held his gaze for a long moment. Her eyes were the color of winter slate, cold and unblinking. Then she nodded once, a small, almost imperceptible dip of her chin. "I'm listening."Saul nodded sharply, before turning to Kim, “You start." Kim exhaled slowly, the breath escaping through her nose, and following his urging, she began. She

‘Were getting somewhere,’ Both of them thought, hearts feeling close to busting with elation.Just at that moment, Cross cleared her throat, bringing their attention back to her immediately. The woman looked very weary as she looked between them"The kidnappings have been going on for seven months," Cross said, and her voice was quieter now, almost reluctant, as if she were sharing something she had not intended to share. "At least, that's when we started noticing the pattern. The first victims were low-profile. Most of the family members taken had money but no real influence. And it made them easy target's who could disappear without making headlines. But over time, the targets got bigger and once the media got hold of it, the ‘Rich Takers,’ were born. Capricious kidnappers who had no ransom demands, no bodies and no trace."As the woman spoke, Kim was already flipping through her notebook, her finger tracing down a column of dates she had scribbled in the margins during the night.
Chapter 149. Bridges.
"She can't do this," Kim continued, turning towards Saul abruptly and her voice was rising already, the control she had been clinging to since the hospital beginning to fracture into nothingness. "She fucking can't!"Saul said nothing. He had risen to his feet as well, standing before her with his hands limp by his sides. The afternoon light caught the side of his face, and she could see his jaw working, could see the muscle in his cheek flexing as he ground his teeth together. " Kim,” He groused, "Wait a-,” but the woman snarled at him, cutting him off."How can you just stand there?!" she demanded, turning away from him and pacing toward the sofa. "How can you be so…so calm about this? My brother is out there somewhere. He could be in one of those warehouses right now, and the one person who has the resources to find him just walked out that door like we were nothing. And you're just standing there." She felt something like a sob grow in her throat and the feeling of it choked her,
Chapter 150. The Stake
Kim gaped at the man's almost lazy response. "And how the hell do you know where she lives?" She nearly screeched, hands tightening to fists at her side, fighting the urge to hit him with one of them"I made a call while you were sleeping." Saul responded, still as coy but hi's eyes stayed fixed on the house across the street, tracking the silhouette in the upstairs window as it moved from one side of the room to the other. "I know a guy in city records. He owed me a favor."Kim scoffed, eyes rolling."And how long have you been planning to spy on her?"At this, he turned his head then, just enough to meet her eyes, and the corner of his mouth twitched upwards. "Oh but we're not spying." He said in a mock innocent tone, lowering his voice like he was sharing a secret, “We're just…. scouting. There's a difference.""Is there?" "Scouting sounds better don't you think?. Atleast it's less likely to get us arrested if she looks out her window and sees us sitting here." He settled back ag
