Chapter 161. In Stitches.
Saul immediately stepped forward, relief crossing over his features at her interruption."You have to check on Kim first. She's worse off than-"Cross held up a hand, cutting him off mid-sentence. Her eyes were flat and unyielding as they met his. "I'll decide who needs what. Sit down." She spat.Saul opened his mouth to argue, but Cross fixed him with a look that made him close it again. There was something in her gaze that brooked no argument and definitely no negotiation. Saul knew she would do whatever she wanted regardless of his feelings on it.Glaring at the woman, he begrudgingly sat down in the armchair across from the couch, his jaw tight, his arms crossed over his chest. The position put pressure on his ribs, and he winced involuntarily, but he didn't move.Cross started with him, much to his displeasure. She knelt in front of him, her movements surprisingly gentle and began her examination. Her hands were firm as she checked his ribs, pressing gently on his side."Your r
Chapter 162. Catch Up
The drive to the automobile building was tense and silent.Kim sat in the back seat beside Saul, her head resting against the window, her eyes fixed on the passing cityscape without really seeing any of it. The pills Cross had given her were starting to take effect, dulling the sharp edge of the pain in her head, but they couldn't do anything for the exhaustion that seemed to have settled into her very bones. Every muscle ached, every joint protested, and there was a part of her that desperately wanted to close her eyes and sleep for a week.Unfortunately for her, she couldn't. Not yet. Not when they were so close.Saul sat beside her, his body angled toward her even though he wasn't looking at her. His ribs were still aching, the ice pack Cross had given him long since melted and discarded, but he didn't complain. He just sat there, his hands resting on his knees, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. The wound on his temple throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, and he could feel
Chapter 163. Wrecking Ball.
The door flew open with a crash, the wood splintering around the lock, the sound echoing through the office like a gunshot. Pieces of wood scattered across the carpet, and the lock mechanism clattered to the floor, useless.Aldric jumped to his feet, his chair scraping against the floor, his eyes wide with shock. "What the hell?!"The guest on the other side of the desk, a young woman in a business suit, was already on the floor, her hands pressed against her ears, her face pale with confusion. Her glasses had flown off her face and landed somewhere near the window, and she was frantically patting the carpet, searching for them.In the midst of the chaos, the three of them walked in, Cross taking the lead, her badge already in her hand. Saul followed, his eyes scanning the room with the same careful attention he had learned to apply to everything. Kim brought up the rear, her gaze fixed on Aldric's face.Aldric's eyes widened further as he saw Saul. His mouth opened, then closed,
Chapter 164. Hanged Man.
Cross's expression didn't change, but something in her eyes hardened. "You were at the warehouse this morning. The one that exploded."Aldric's smile didn't waver. "I don't know what you're talking about.""No?" Cross tilted her head, her gaze drifting to the small bandage on his temple. "Then how did you get that injury on your head?"A flicker of something crossed Aldric's face, worry, maybe, or fear, but it vanished almost as quickly as it had appeared. "Home incident," he said smoothly. "I hit my head on a cabinet. It was nothing serious."Cross raised an eyebrow. "A home incident. That's interesting." She paused, letting the silence stretch. "Because it looks very fresh. Very new. Almost like you got it while fleeing a building that was about to be demolished."The fear on Aldric's face was plain as day this time. His composure cracked, just for a moment, and Kim saw the panic flicker in his eyes before he forced it down."I don't know what you're talking about," he repeated, b
Chapter 165. Method Questioning.
And then the door was abruptly closed behind them, and a moment later, there was a scraping sound. Cross had wedged a chair against the door, blocking them from coming back in.Saul and Kim stood in the hallway, their ears straining for any sound from within. Honeslty, both of them expected to hear shouts or even screams. The normal sounds of an interrogation gone violent. But the room was silent. For a long moment, nothing happened. The silence stretched, thin and fragile, and Kim found herself holding her breath. Then, slowly, muffled voices began to seep through the door. The words were indistinct, too quiet to make out, but the tone was clear. Cross was talking and Aldric was responding. It was a conversation, not a confrontation like they had feared.Kim leaned closer to the door, straining to hear, but the voices remained frustratingly indistinct. She could catch a word here and there…."No," "want,".... but nothing she could string together into meaning.Beside her, Saul
Chapter 166. Matty And Tony.
Kim let out a shaky breath, her gaze dropping to her lap so he wouldn't be able to read them, "There isn't. Everything is okay." She assured, tone a touch more cold. Saul was silent for a moment. When he spoke, his voice was thoughtful, measured. "Alright. If… if that ever changes, you can… you have to tell me." Kim nodded slowly. The feelings of suffocation had thankfully reduced but the fear was still there within, coiled in her chest like a serpent waiting to strike. "Wait here," Cross suddenly said. Both of them startled, forgetting about the woman for a second. Cross meanwhile wasn't even looking at them, her eyes fixed on some other point, "I need to talk to the captain. I'll be back in a few minutes." She disappeared through a door marked "CAPTAIN'S OFFICE" before either of them could respond.
Chapter 167. Fed Up
Finally, the door opened. Tony emerged, followed by Cross, and they walked toward Kim and Saul with identical expressions of grim determination."It's ready," Tony said, handing Cross a piece of paper. "I've sent you the location. You're in good hands, Matty. You've worked with them before."Cross took the paper and folded it carefully, tucking it into her pocket. She looked up at Tony, and her entire expression softened. She stepped forward and hugged him, a quick, tight embrace that seemed to surprise even her."Thank you," she said quietly. "For everything."Tony patted her back, his face warm with affection. "Be careful out there, kid. And come back in one piece."Cross pulled away and nodded, her composure already snapping back into place. "I will."The other man simply smiled at her fondly, hand lifting to squeezing her shoulder.Saul and Kim simply watched the sweet scene on the sidelines, but something was churning in Saul's gut.Regardless of their camadrie, the cryptic co
Chapter 168. Or Else.
Saul could feel his heartbeat growing louder in his ears, his pulse rising. A thin sheen of sweat had broken out on his forehead. He didn't know what they were going to do. He didn't know how they were going to get out of this. But he knew he couldn't just sit here and let Cross take them wherever she wanted.Earlier, while they were waiting at the precinct, he had taken a pen from one of the desks. He didn't know why he had done it. It had been pure instinct as he slipped it into his pocket without thinking, and now it was there, a small, sharp object that he could use if he had to.The car continued deeper into the woods, the trees growing thicker, the light dimming. Saul could see a clearing ahead, a space where the trees began to open up to wherever it was that the detective was taking them.He felt something inside him snap."Stop the car," he said, his voice low and dangerous. The woman didn't even act like she heard his words. She just kept driving, her eyes fixed on the roa
Chapter 169. What Will It Be.
Cross had been leading them around for hours now. She had been keeping secrets, hiding information, treating them like pawns in a game they didn't understand. And now, finally, someone was pushing back.Kim knew that Saul had crossed a line. She knew that threatening a police detective with a weapon was a crime, that it could land them all in serious trouble. But she wasn't going to be against him now. Not when they were this close. Not when Leo's life might depend on getting answers. He might as well carry it through. To her credit, Cross didn't even seem bothered by the threat sual posed to her. She didn't even flinch at his breath in her ear.She just sat there, her body relaxed, her eyes fixed on Saul's face through the rear mirror. A sharp pen was pressed against her throat, a millimeter away from breaking the skin, and she looked as calm as if she were discussing the weather."You know," she said, her voice conversational, almost bored, "if you do manage to puncture my carot
Chapter 170. Listen.
He looked at her, and something in his expression shifted. She could physically see the tension in his shoulders ease, even though it was just slightly. He sighed, a long, weary sound that seemed to come from somewhere deep in his chest. He thought about it, weighing the options, running through the scenarios in his head. He could still sense that strange feeling of anxiety in his gut that did nothing to assure him of the woman's trustworthiness even as he weighed the woman's words and found them truthful. Not trusting his gut might be wrong.Letting cross go be an even bigger mistake… but staying here and threatening her and threatening her wasn't going to help anyone with anything.Hence his current dilemma. After a few more tense seconds, he brought down his arm. With clammy hands, he repocketed the pen and crossed his arms over his chest, his expression still guarded, still wary."Fine," he said, his voice flat. "Carry on."Cross let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been ho
