Chapter 101
Their eyes widened as the smoke slowly cleared. Through the thick haze, they could make out the silhouette of a man standing near the damaged wall. He wore what appeared to be a slim, full-body suit of armor, and somehow, that armor had allowed him to shield most of the survivors stationed along the wall from the worst of the missile barrage. Two of the missiles in particular would almost certainly have killed everyone caught in their path, yet the stranger had intercepted them before they could reach the survivors. His armor was badly scorched from the explosions, but it remained intact. “Ahhh… That person.” “Isn’t that the guy we saw before?!” They were right. This was no ordinary survivor. The man was an Augmented Human, and every part of his equipment looked far more advanced than anything Max’s group currently possessed. His armor covered his entire body, while several unfamiliar weapons and devices were attached to his gear. When Max heard the survivors talking about him,
Chapter 102
Max had no intention of telling Hale too much about himself. He appreciated the fact that Hale had saved Ryan and the others, but gratitude wasn’t enough to make him careless. The Titles were part of his identity and belonged to the strange system that only he and a handful of other “Foreign Survivors” seemed to possess. Giving that information to someone he had only just met could easily come back to haunt him later. Max narrowed his eyes. “Why do you want to know my titles?” Hale chuckled when he noticed how guarded Max had become. “If I wanted to hurt you, it would’ve happened already… You’ve seen what I can do. I’m stronger than your entire group combined.” Atom seemed to pick up on the change in Max’s mood. The A-Grade Reaper adjusted its stance slightly, its sensors immediately focusing on Hale. The Augmented Human didn’t seem bothered by the sudden attention. Instead, he looked almost amused by Max’s suspicion. He slowly raised one hand. “I’m not here to take your loot or
Chapter 103
Max already knew from the system notification that the Gene Trader could appear in random locations. Even so, asking Hale didn’t hurt. There was always a chance the Augmented Human knew something the system hadn’t bothered to reveal. Hale took a moment before answering. “If you’re serious about finding him, check the areas where Field Tyrants have spawned. Traders often stay near places where dangerous variants appear… it draws attention, and it’s also where customers come looking for resources.” Max nodded as he took in the information. Hale, however, still had more to say. “If you can’t find him there, search the ruins. Look around shady places, broken structures, and anywhere sunlight doesn’t reach. The heat drives them underground. They prefer to stay hidden from sight until someone who knows what they’re looking for comes along.” Max nodded again, committing every word to memory. The Gene Trader still sounded incredibly difficult to find, but at least he now had somewhere t
Chapter 104
The night before, Corin joined the others outside the shelter to bury the three bodies. They no longer had the Special Furnace in Ark-45, so there was no reason to use the corpses as fuel. Instead, the survivors dug three shallow graves beyond the damaged section of the wall and placed a simple stone over each one.Corin had known all three men well. They had once worked as scouts, but injuries sustained while escaping from Reapers had made it impossible for them to continue. After that, they had taken whatever small jobs were available inside the shelter and contributed in whatever way they could.Seeing them lying there without a breath left in their bodies affected Corin more than he wanted to admit.“Haa~” Russel sighed as he looked at them.He had seen plenty of people die since the beginning of the A.I. apocalypse. He had even grown accustomed to the sight of bodies being buried, but knowing death was common did not make losing people any easier. These men had survived alongside
Chapter 105
About an hour earlier, Max and Atom had also started searching for the Gene Trader. They headed north, gradually leaving Ark-45 Shelter farther behind. Atom walked beside Max, close enough to intervene immediately if anything dangerous appeared. The first part of their journey took them across open ground scattered with rusted vehicle frames. Most of the wrecks were half buried in dirt, while anything useful had clearly been stripped away by scavengers long ago.Max stopped beside several of them, checking for footprints, discarded supplies, fresh tracks, or any other indication that someone had recently passed through the area. Unfortunately, he found nothing.Atom simply continued beside him, its sensors scanning the surroundings as it followed Max’s movements and waited for instructions.About thirty minutes later, the landscape began to change. They reached the outskirts of what had once been a small settlement, but there was very little left to suggest that people had ever lived
Chapter 106
Ark-62 looked peaceful from the outside, but the shelter was barely holding together. It had not been long since the Mech Siege had nearly destroyed the entire place. The previous leaders had died during the fighting, and with them disappeared the last of Ark-62’s high-level Augmented Humans. What remained was a struggling community of thirty-two survivors, damaged walls, dwindling supplies, and the faint hope that the A.I. Army would simply overlook them.Farrah woke early every morning during the ten-day period leading up to the Global Event. Her responsibilities were simple. She spent several hours each day patrolling a specific section of the shelter, mainly the garden, the animal pens, and the well.Ark-62 still had some food, but their supplies were far from comfortable. A small garden occupied part of the courtyard, and although the soil had turned dark from the effects of the Apocalypse, it remained fertile enough to grow a few vegetables. That garden had to be protected.Farr
Chapter 107
“What the heck?”Farrah narrowed her eyes as the strange figure finally came into view.At first, she assumed he couldn’t be a Foreign Survivor like her and Alfie. His equipment looked completely different from the rough, practical Tier-1 Survivor Gear they had received when they were brought into this world.Farrah still remembered her own outfit clearly. She wore a simple shirt beneath a dark jacket, durable pants with six pockets, sturdy boots, and a belt fitted with several basic pouches. It wasn’t fashionable, but it was comfortable and practical enough for surviving in the Apocalypse.Alfie’s equipment was almost identical. Every Foreign Survivor she had encountered wore the same type of clothing. The material was surprisingly durable and resistant to scratches, almost as if some kind of invisible enchantment had been placed on it.But the man standing before them was different. His equipment was clearly a much better version of what Farrah and Alfie had been given. His jacket l
Chapter 108
Max blinked when he saw the notification. He had expected the system to identify the machine as another Field Tyrant, so the different name caught him off guard. It wasn’t a Field Tyrant at all.The system had classified it as a War Tyrant, and although Max didn’t have enough information to be certain, he had a feeling that this version was considerably stronger.’I guess I’m lucky its joints were already damaged.’ He mused. That wasn’t the only thing that made this enemy special. The War Tyrant had dropped something Max had never received from the previous Field Tyrants.A Survivor Medal.’A Survivor Medal just like that… This is just so perfect.’Max clenched his fist in excitement. He had just received confirmation that the Gene Trader had been found, and now he had another Survivor Medal to use when he met him.If the medal could be exchanged for something valuable, having an extra one could make a huge difference. But the system still had more to offer.Another familiar notificat
Chapter 109
After giving Farrah and Alfie their test, Max turned away and started walking. He didn’t run. Conserving his energy was important, especially since the industrial zone was still hours away. If another enemy appeared along the way, arriving exhausted could put him in a dangerous position. He needed to stay in good condition. During his fight with the War Tyrant, he had already spent 140 Spirit Points, which meant he wouldn’t be able to rely on Spirit Pulse again for some time.“Right… I should check it now…” Max muttered as he glanced around.Atom walked beside him, its optics constantly scanning the surroundings for anything unusual.“Stay on guard. If anything moves, you react first.” Max spoke quietly. The Reaper’s eyes briefly brightened as it acknowledged the command. As they continued along the ruined road, Max opened his system interface. His inventory appeared before him, and he quickly searched through the newest additions until he found what he was looking for.“Ahhh… It’s he
Chapter 110
A few more mutants broke away from the larger group and charged toward them.Their swollen muscles bounced beneath their pale skin as they rushed forward with frightening excitement, almost as if the sight of living humans had triggered some deep instinct inside them. Max still had no idea why they were so aggressive or what they actually wanted. Were they trying to kill them? Did they want to eat them? He couldn’t say for certain. For now, it didn’t matter.Whatever these creatures were, they were attacking his people, and that made them enemies.Atom’s two devastating shots had already reduced their numbers considerably. If Max and the others kept their formation, they should be able to finish the remaining mutants.Max raised both revolvers, one in each hand, and moved forward. His aim wasn’t nearly as accurate as Xander’s, so he had to compensate by getting closer. At short range, missing was much harder. He squeezed both triggers in quick succession.Bang! Bang! Bang! One mutant
