Chapter 20
The screen instantly went completely black. The normal white lights in the boardroom slowly turned back on. The silence returned. It was heavier than before. Mr. Henderson looked at Marcus. His tear-stained face suddenly turned into a mask of pure anger. "Do it," Henderson growled. Marcus stepped back. "What?""Do it!" Mrs. Lee yelled. She pointed her sharp finger at him. "Confess! Save our money! Save the company!""I will not go to prison for you!" Marcus screamed. "I am the CEO!""You are nothing!" Henderson shouted. He grabbed a heavy glass water pitcher from the table and threw it at Marcus. SMASH.The glass shattered against the wall right next to Marcus’s head. Water splashed all over his expensive gray suit. "We will not let you destroy our lives!" Henderson roared. He walked toward Marcus. His fists were closed. The other board members began to step forward, too. They looked like angry wolves. They had lost their minds. The fear of losing their money had turned them int
Chapter 21
Marcus Thorne knelt on the thick, soft carpet of his massive corner office. His hands were covering his head. His eyes were squeezed tightly shut. He was shaking like a freezing child. He heard the loud DING of the private elevator in the hallway outside. Then, he heard the heavy footsteps. Thump. Thump. Thump. The footsteps were moving slowly down the hall. They were coming toward his office. The Director had sent his elite clean-up crew. They were coming to kill him. They were coming to erase all the mistakes. Marcus could not breathe. His heart hammered in his chest like a wild bird trapped in a cage. Sweat poured down his face, completely ruining his expensive silk collar. He waited for the loud sound of automatic gunfire. He waited for the heavy wooden door to burst open. But the gunfire did not happen. Instead, the brass handle on his office door slowly began to turn. Click. The door pushed open quietly. Marcus kept his eyes closed. "Please," he whimpered, his face pres
Chapter 22
"Save me!" Marcus screamed into the phone. "I will give you the confession! I will go on live television right now! I will tell the world everything I did to you! Just please do not let them kill me!"Ron was quiet for three heavy seconds. His struggle was burning in his mind. Part of him—the angry, broken man who lived in The Pit—wanted to hang up the phone. He wanted to sit back and watch the Director’s men shoot Marcus. He wanted Marcus to feel the ultimate pain. But Ron was not just an angry man anymore. He was the Apex. He was a Warlord with a plan. If Marcus died today, Ron would be blamed for everything. The FBI would never know the truth. Ron needed Marcus alive to tell the truth to the world. Ron needed justice, not just bloody revenge. "Get under your desk, Marcus," Ron commanded. "Do not move. Do not look up. Cover your ears.""What? What are you going to do?" Marcus asked frantically. "I am coming up," Ron said. Click. The call ended. Marcus dropped the phone. He dov
Chapter 23
Mr. Henderson and Mrs. Lee screamed at the top of their lungs, crawling frantically toward the corners of the room. The rich people who thought they owned the world were now just terrified animals hiding in a crossfire. In Marcus’s office, the four soldiers who had come to kill him turned around to run back and help their team. Before they could leave the office, the ceiling tiles above them exploded. Jax dropped down from the hidden ventilation shaft. He landed directly on top of two of the soldiers. The sheer weight of the giant man crushed them to the floor. The other two soldiers raised their guns to shoot Jax. Jax moved faster than a man his size should be able to move. He grabbed the barrel of the first gun, twisting it upward. He drove his massive knee into the soldier's stomach. The man folded in half. Jax grabbed him by the tactical vest and threw him straight through the glass wall of the office, out into the hallway. The last soldier fired his gun at Jax. The bullets
Chapter 24
Ron stood at the edge of the window. The strong wind blew his hair wildly. He stared at the helicopter. He could have ordered General Vance to shoot it down with a sniper rifle. He could have ended Theresa’s life right there. But Ron’s core struggle held him back. If he shot down a helicopter over the middle of a crowded city, innocent people on the street below would die from the falling metal. He was a Warlord, but he was not a monster. He would not kill innocent people just to get revenge on a guilty woman. He watched in silence as the black helicopter pulled away and flew quickly into the bright blue morning sky, disappearing over the tall buildings. "She escaped, Sir," General Vance said, standing next to Ron. The General sounded very angry. "Give me the order, and I will track that bird down.""Let her go, General," Ron said softly. He did not look angry. He looked completely focused. "She is no longer the Queen of this city. She is just a prisoner on a different chessboard n
Chapter 25
The city of Oakhaven was completely black. The Director had shut down the main power grid. Millions of people were trapped in the dark. There were no streetlights. There were no traffic lights. The tall skyscrapers were just massive, dark shadows against the night sky. Down in the streets, sirens cried out like angry animals. Fire burned in small pockets where cars had crashed. But high above the dark city, one building still had lights. It was a secret penthouse on the top floor of a luxury hotel. The Director owned the hotel. The penthouse had its own private emergency generator. The lights inside burned a bright, cold white. Theresa Sterling stood by the massive glass window. She held a crystal glass in her shaking hand. The glass was filled with dark red wine. She stared down at the black city. The red wine looked exactly like blood in the bright light of the room. She took a deep drink. The wine tasted bitter. Three hours ago, she had been on the ninetieth floor of Sterling
Chapter 26
Theresa walked into the huge, white marble bathroom attached to the bedroom. She looked at the ceiling. There were no cameras in the bathroom. The Director liked to watch, but even he had limits. She walked to the large silver sink and turned the water on full blast. The water rushed out loudly, hitting the marble. The loud noise of the water would hide the sound of her voice. Theresa sat down on the cold floor next to the bathtub. She reached down and took off her left high heel shoe. It was a very expensive designer shoe, custom-made in Italy. But it was not just a shoe. Theresa dug her long, sharp fingernails into the thick red sole of the shoe. She pulled hard. The red sole ripped away from the bottom of the shoe. Hidden inside a small, hollow space in the heel was a tiny, flat, black piece of plastic. It was an emergency satellite phone. Theresa had bought it on the black market three years ago. She had hidden it in her shoe in case the police ever came for her. The phone
Chapter 27
Griggs walked slowly down the hallway toward the master bedroom. His heavy shoes made no sound on the thick carpet. He stopped at the locked wooden door. He pulled a small silver key from his pocket. He pushed the key into the lock. Click. Griggs turned the handle and pushed the door open. The bedroom was empty. Griggs raised his pistol. He stepped into the room, pointing the gun at the bed, then at the closet. He heard the loud sound of rushing water coming from the bathroom. He smiled a cruel, cold smile. He walked slowly toward the open bathroom door. He raised his gun, aiming right at the center of the doorway. He was ready to shoot the moment he saw her. He stepped into the bathroom. Theresa was sitting on the floor in the corner, holding her knees. She looked up at him with wide, terrified eyes. "Time to say goodbye, Mrs. Sterling," Griggs said. He aimed the black gun directly at her face. His finger tightened on the trigger. FIP.A tiny, sharp sound cut through the no
Chapter 28
The green text glowed on Vane’s computer screen in the dark penthouse. HELLO VANE. I SEE YOU FOUND MY WIFE. I AM WAITING FOR YOU AT THE RIVER.Theresa Sterling stopped breathing. She stared at the words. She felt a cold sweat break out on her neck. Ron was not just a step ahead; he was inside their minds. He knew where they were. He knew their escape plan before they even started it. "Vane," Theresa whispered, her voice shaking violently. "He knows. How does he know?"Vane did not panic. He did not yell. He simply pushed his round glasses up his nose. His face remained completely boring and empty of emotion. He reached out and closed his laptop with a soft snap. "He hacked the city's traffic camera network before The Director shut down the power grid," Vane said calmly. "He saw my car. He calculated the fastest route out of the city. He guessed the river. It is simple math, Theresa. Do not let him scare you.""Simple math?!" Theresa cried. She pointed at the closed laptop. "He is w
Chapter 29
Cross looked toward the exact center of the huge warehouse floor. He had missed it when he first walked in, but now he saw it. Sitting all by itself in the middle of the empty concrete floor was a single, cheap wooden chair. Sitting on top of the wooden chair was a small, black radio. It had a small red light blinking on top of it. Next to the radio was a thick, black wire. The wire ran from the radio, across the floor, and disappeared into a massive metal box bolted to the wall. Cross walked slowly toward the chair. His combat boots made soft sounds on the dusty floor. He stared at the blinking red light. His radio earpiece buzzed. "Cross," Vane’s voice said. Vane sounded slightly nervous, which was very rare. "My sensors just picked up a massive power surge inside your building. The power is not coming from a generator. It is being pushed into the building from the city's hidden sewer lines. Get out. Get out right now. It is a trap."Before Cross could turn around and yell to h
