Chapter 41
Tono quickly moved away from the crowd of police officers and the forensic team. With slightly trembling hands, he looked up Zaqqy’s contact details and called the young man straight away.“Hello, Assalamualaikum. Tono? What’s up? Calling so early in the morning?” asked Zaqqy straight away from the other end.“Hello, Zaqqy! Do you know what’s going on? There are loads of police at the café! Could it be related to what happened last night?” said Tono, looking anxious.“What happened last night? What exactly happened last night?” Zaqqy asked in return, his voice sounding very calm, as if nothing had happened.“But you were here!” Tono’s eyes widened. “Yes, but I only went there last night to pick up Rahayu. After that, I went straight home with Mum and Dad. What’s going on at the café?”“Oh my God, Zaqqy... Oh God. Mr Darwin has died here! It looks like he fell from the top floor. Then there are the bodies of Malik, Puji, and Aman. They’ve all passed away, Zaqqy!”There was a mo

asked the police officer. A nameplate bearing the name Agung Suteja was pinned to his uniform.“The café closes at ten o’clock in the evening, sir. But sometimes there are special bookings after closing time. That does often happen with Mr Darwin’s permission. It’s just that, for matters like that, the entire responsibility lies with Mr Darwin’s own men—the bodies that were taken away earlier,” replied Doni, trembling.“Oh, I see. Right then, let’s check the footage from when the café closed until perhaps five in the morning.”“Yes, sir,” replied Doni. His fingers danced swiftly across the keyboard. “Here you go, sir. Let’s start with the front car park camera.”The large monitor screen displayed a fairly clear black-and-white image. Tono held his breath. He knew full well that it was at that very hour that the black Kijang driven by Zaqqy had arrived there. He closed his eyes, unable to bear the thought of Zaqqy’s face appearing clearly on the screen.“Hang on, why is it like t

The call was abruptly cut off after the deep voice on the other end demanded the footage. Agung Suteja immediately rushed back into the café, ordered a copy of all the CCTV footage to be made, and sent it straight away to the man he knew as the leader of the Suro Menggala group. Once the matter was settled, the police withdrew, leaving the café now cordoned off by police tape, a rigid barrier marking the bloody crime scene.“What’s going to happen now? Mr Darwin has passed away,” whispered one of the staff, looking dejected.“I don’t know either. Who’s going to run this café? We won’t be working here anymore,” replied another, gazing at the now-silent building. The staff were overcome with utter confusion. Fears for their jobs mingled with horror at the thought of their boss having been brutally murdered along with all his men.Meanwhile, far from the hustle and bustle of the café, stood a luxurious house that appeared quiet yet eerie. Two security guards stood watch at the gate,

said Wak Jul, handing over a few notes.“Yes, Wak. Thank you so much for the pay,” replied Zaqqy sincerely.“You’re welcome. Here, take this—it’ll be enough for your side dish at home,” added Wak Jul, handing him a plastic bag containing about seven ounces of fresh sea fish.Zaqqy’s eyes lit up. “Alhamdulillah, thank you, Wak! Well then, I’ll head home now. Assalamualaikum.”“Waalaikumsalam! Just don’t be late again tomorrow, Zaqqy! You did a good job—quick, clean, and the fish boxes were neat when you packed them!” praised Wak Jul, to which Zaqqy gave a firm thumbs-up before walking towards his motorbike’s parking spot.Just as he was about to start the engine, Ki Braja’s cold voice echoed in his mind.‘Be careful, Zaqqy.’The young man fell silent, his hand frozen on the ignition key. “What is it, Ki? Is something going to happen?”‘They have begun to reveal themselves. A great danger… a deeper, darker existence may soon be upon you. Do you remember what I told you before you re

Several employees whispered amongst themselves at the arrival of the man in the black cloak. His eccentric appearance, complete with sunglasses that concealed his cold gaze, made them exchange glances; some even instinctively stepped back to make way for him.The man, Dwitoro, walked calmly until he stopped right in front of the police tape. His gaze fixed on the paving blocks, which still bore the dark red stain left by Darwin’s fallen body. He closed his eyes for a moment, folding his arms across his chest. Without a word, he gave a wry smile; he could sense the faint remnants of energy still pulsing there.Just as Dwitoro was about to step over the barrier, Jefri, one of the café’s security guards, approached him.“Excuse me, who are you, sir?” Jefri asked warily.“I’m Mr Darwin’s colleague. Upon hearing the news of his passing, I wanted to see the scene for myself as we happen to be collaborating on a project,” replied Dwitoro, his expression completely impassive.“Oh, I see

Dwitoro slowed the car down, breathing heavily. “Just how powerful is his energy that I can’t penetrate his face? It looks like this search is going to take a bit longer,” he muttered. He pressed the accelerator again, speeding through the night with a burning sense of curiosity.Elsewhere, the police had also received a report regarding a body found in a former tofu factory. Agung Suteja and his police colleagues were already there. The young officer stood in front of the former tofu factory, now cordoned off by police tape. The pungent smell of blood and old dust assaulted his senses.“There are no CCTV cameras here, are there?” Agung asked his subordinate.“There are, Commander, but they’re not working. We’ve already checked every corner.”“Then, were any identification documents left behind?”“Yes, Commander. The bodies are identified as Rinto, Ardito, Andrianus, and Sugianto. We’ve also secured their mobile phones. The last call was made to Darwin’s number. It seems they were

Bang!A loud bang shattered the silence of the night outside the rented flat. Zaqqy jumped; his instincts immediately put him on high alert. He scanned the area and spotted three mysterious men wearing vests, hats and face coverings. They stood defiantly beneath the dim glow of the streetlamp.Noticing Zaqqy watching them, one of them waved his hand in a mocking gesture, then gave a thumbs-down—a clear sign of contempt. Without a second thought, Zaqqy’s blood boiled. He immediately ran after them.“Zaqqy! Where are you going?” shouted Mrs Sri, who had just come out, startled by the sound of the explosion.Zaqqy stopped in his tracks. He turned around, his face tense as he approached his mother.“Just go inside, Mum! Don’t come out. I’ve got a bad feeling—there are thugs out front,” said Zaqqy as he ushered his mother inside. “Lock all the doors from the inside. I’ll lock this one from the outside too!” shouted Zaqqy firmly. After making sure the doors were securely locked, he ran

He muttered to himself, recalling how he had crushed the market thug’s hand the day before. He took a deep breath, then stared at the palm of his hand, which was throbbing once more. His veins glowed red, creeping slowly up to his elbow in time with his racing heartbeat.“Ah, never mind. We’ll see. If they’re really looking for trouble, I’ll finish them off. I’m no longer the weak Zaqqy. This strength won’t let me be oppressed again like when Rinto nearly killed me,” he said to himself with iron resolve.'Be careful, Zaqqy. You’re being targeted from all sides,’ Ki Braja’s voice rustled again, causing Zaqqy to immediately look left and right, hoping no one was there. “What do you mean, Ki? Am I really in grave danger?” Zaqqy asked in return. ‘Be on your guard. I cannot always warn you. I’m only reminding you at the start; the rest you must handle yourself.’The voice faded away. Zaqqy chose to stay on guard outside, lying on a long bench with his hands propping up his head. He didn

The thug flinched. He tried to break free from the stranger’s grip, but his hand felt as though it were locked onto his shirt. “This wound…” The man pointed directly at the bruise on the thug’s chest. His eyes darted downwards, and he swallowed hard as he felt a cold aura radiating from the man’s fingertips.“What’s wrong with my wound? What’s it to you?! Let me go!” snapped the thug. He tried to pull his shirt free from the stranger’s grip, but the well-dressed man didn’t budge. His grip was so firm, though his face remained as calm as a lake.“Hey, you smart alec! Don’t cause trouble here! You just turn up out of the blue and bother my men. Get out, or we’ll all finish you off!” shouted Sapto as he stood up. Tasssh! Wusssh...However, as Sapto stepped forward, the man simply flicked his left hand through the air.BRAKK!Sapto was sent flying violently. Tables and chairs shifted roughly; a jug of palm wine shattered on the floor. “Aaaaaaaa....” The women who had been singin

muttered the man in a cold, barely audible tone. “I don’t need to get close to attack now. I just want to see what kind of face makes the leader of the Suro Menggala group so uneasy.”The man in the black cloak exhaled a long, slow breath, letting cold vapour escape from his mouth even though the night air wasn’t that cold. He then swung his left hand in a precise circular motion, before patting his own chest three times in a strange pattern.Instantly, the aura around him seemed to be sucked back into his body. His figure still stood there, yet his presence seemed to fade, blending perfectly with the shadows of the trees and walls around him.Wusssh... “Halimun Rogo…” he muttered, darting like the wind, as he spotted Halim talking to Zaqqy. “Is what you’re saying true, Lim?” Zaqqy asked, startled, though he kept his voice low so it wouldn’t be heard inside the house.“Yes, I swear! They’re back, but this time they’re not wearing masks. You know who they are? Two of them are thug
