Chapter 11. Little Mouse
The alley wasn't very wide, only enough for four people to walk side by side, its walls tall from stone and wood that had already blackened at the lower sections from dampness.Five people on each side blocked the left and right exits, each standing at a calculated distance, not too close together but enough to anticipate every possible escape route.A large man stepped forward from the right line, his body nearly half the width of the alley itself, his hands empty but their size was reason enough not to carry a weapon. "This time you won't be able to get away, little rat."From the left side, another man stood with his hands on his hips, his build smaller than the large man but the way he stood was different, more relaxed, more certain. His eyes went to the large man. "Torn, I can't believe I had to bring this many people just to catch one little rat."Torn turned toward the man who called him. "Don't underestimate her, Jason. She has magic abili
Chapter 12. She's Mine
Ash stood in front of the rear cargo bed of the tactical vehicle, his eyes on the iron cage on top of it.The elf woman was still sitting inside the cage, her green hair disheveled after her hoodie had been forcibly pulled back, but her expression didn't reflect someone who had just been caught. More like someone waiting for something boring to finish."Give my money back." Ash's voice was flat. The elf woman furrowed her brow. "I didn't take your money.""I can smell my wallet on you."The elf woman went quiet for a moment, her eyes blinking once. "What?" Her voice dropped half a tone. "Is your nose like a dog's?"Ash didn't answer, his hand going straight through the gap in the iron bars, reaching toward the inside of the cage. The elf woman stepped back two paces to the far side of the cage, just outside the reach of that hand. She exhaled shortly, then her hand went into her trouser pocket and pulled out a thin walle
Chapter 13. Ash vs Jason
Jason pulled the trigger without warning.BANG!The gunshot shattered the noise of the marketplace, and the bullet pierced Ash's chest on the left side. His body staggered half a step back, then Ash cried out once, short and sharp, before his knees hit the ground. Blood poured heavily from the wound, falling onto the cobblestones beneath him, and the color was not red.It was bright purple.Jason stood still. Bruno beside him did not move either. Both of them stared at the puddle forming slowly beneath Ash's knees, a color that made no sense, too vivid to be called blood. The puddle spread for a few seconds before the ground absorbed it entirely.Bruno swallowed hard. "Boss ..."Jason did not answer. His eyes did not move from the figure kneeling before him.Ash coughed, once, twice. His hands pressed the wound on his chest, then slowly he lifted his head. His breathing was still rough, but his body began to move. Not li
Chapter 14. Cold Wind from the East
Several officers stood in the building lobby when Jacker entered, their uniforms neat and their posture straight. They saluted the moment they saw him, a brief and practiced greeting, but Jacker walked past all of them without turning his head. The building corridor was long and bright. White lights were embedded flush into the ceiling, the walls were clean without excessive ornamentation, the floor reflected a faint shadow with every step of Jacker's shoes. A cold and efficient design, with no room for anything unnecessary. Jacker pressed the elevator button without stopping, stepped in when the doors opened, then stood still for the ride up. His room was on the highest floor. Spacious, with high ceilings and large glass windows facing the city. From there the entire district was visible, buildings packed tightly together, busy air lanes, a city that never stopped moving. Jacker did not look outside. He walked directly to a private room
Chapter 15. Darkside of Blackridge
The eastern road of Blackridge was wider than the market road, and busier. Stalls crowded both sides, the sounds of bargaining mixed with the noise of carts pushed over cobbled streets. Ash walked through all of it without slowing his pace, and Shiva followed behind him with lighter steps."So that purple blood of yours," said Shiva, "what caused it?""Don't know.""Don't know, or don't want to answer?"Ash did not answer. Shiva took that as an answer."Fine." Shiva jumped over a small puddle on the pavement. "Then where are you from?""Pinedale.""Where is that? Is it far?" Shiva stared at Ash's back for a moment. "Did you walk from there?""More or less.""More or less, more or less what?"Ash did not answer again. Shiva let out a short breath but did not stop asking."That regeneration of yours, has it been long?""Long enough.""Is it genetic, or because of someth
Chapter 16. Oh Shit!
Balton came out of the meeting room pulling up his trouser zipper. He stopped briefly in front of the door, adjusted his belt with a casual movement, then stepped into the mayor's office like someone who had just come out of a dining room. The man was tall and large. His shoulders nearly touched both sides of the door frame as he passed through it, his arms as thick as an adult's thigh, and his long black hair was left loose and untidy down his back. His way of walking was strange, his body swaying left and right with each step, like someone who had just finished drinking but was not drunk, simply carrying that large body in a way he found comfortable."Sorry about that, Mr. Mayor." Balton raised one hand toward the floor near the meeting room door without looking there. "I dirtied your floor. Have someone clean it later."Harven Dross sat behind his desk with both hands folded on top of it. Every muscle in his jaw appeared to be working hard, but
Chapter 17. Stop Ash!
Shiva hung in the air with one ankle gripped in Ash's hand. Blood rushed back to her head because of her inverted position, and her vision that had been dark began to find shapes around her. The small fire between those rocks was still burning, reflecting orange light onto the surface of Ash's skin covered with bright blue veins, spreading from his neck to his jaw, from his shoulder to the back of his hand, like something alive and moving beneath the layer of his skin. Shiva pushed her body upward with one hand, trying to reach Ash's wrist. "Let me go." Ash did not answer. His eyes looked at Shiva from below, and Shiva immediately knew that gaze did not belong to the man who had been eating beside her earlier. His focus dropped, stopped at her chest area covered only by thin cloth, and did not move from there. Not the gaze of a human being with consideration. More like the gaze of something that only knew des
Chapter 18. Burned Inside
Nothing moved for a few seconds.Around 30 armed men on their flying boards, Jason with his hand half raised, Balton with his smile that had just changed shape, all of them stood still staring at the figure standing in the middle of that circle of boulders.Ash's skin was pale white like ash, and across its entire surface, from the back of his hands to his neck to his jaw, elongated cracks radiated red-orange light like embers forced out from beneath the earth. His mouth was pulled back in a snarl, sharp fangs visible, both eyebrows drawn together toward the center with eyes that blazed with fierce anger, glowing red.Among the dark trees at the edge of the boulders, Shiva who had already half entered the forest stopped walking. Her eyes opened wide, her breath caught.Ash moved. Not running, more like his body relocated, one step and he had already shot into the middle of the first group standing closest to him.His sha
Chapter 19. Escape
Ash did not move.He stood among the boulders that were still smoking, both his hands at his sides, small fires from the cracks in his skin moving slowly following his long breaths. The two red points in his eyes did not focus on a single target, but moved slowly from one direction to another, like something that was calculating."Let's see what he will do next." Balton stood on his flying board several meters above the ground, his bat still in hand, his eyes not moving from the figure in front of him.Ash opened his mouth slowly.Inside his throat, red light glowed, moving like embers being blown from within, growing brighter the wider he opened his mouth."Everyone be careful!" Jason shouted.A blast of fire shot out from Ash's mouth, long and large, shooting at a speed that gave no room to think toward the positions of Balton and Jason. Balton banked his board sharply to the right, Jason to the left, and the fire passed between them before hitting the boulders behind.A deafening e
Chapter 20.. Fire.in the Dark
The darkness of the forest moved. Not wind and not an animal, but something faster than both, leaping from one tree trunk to the next without sound proportionate to its speed. The red-orange light from the cracks in Ash's skin flickered between the gaps in the trees, appearing for a second then vanishing again before anyone could lock onto his position. Two hovering boards that had lost their riders were still swaying among the tree roots when panic began erupting in every direction."Where is he! Where!" A man spun his board left then right, its light sweeping tree trunks without finding anything, then something struck his board from above and he fell spinning into the bushes below.Shots fired from three different directions, uncontrolled, punching through tree trunks and some hitting the boards of people on the other side. Someone screamed, their board lurched then slammed into a large tree trunk in front of them with a loud crash, the rider thrown and hitting the ground hard."Cea
