Ch. 071 Mysteries surrounding mom's death
Ragnar shoved down the food as fast as he could and gulped down water. With a flick of his finger, he compressed the trash till it became a tiny box. The snack cabinet closed behind him and he made his way to the door. The now compressed trash was turned to ash and flicked out in the corridor. Everywhere appeared dry, but Ragnar knew there were advanced monitoring systems everywhere around the house. After all, dreadful killers were the most cautious around others. He would have to rely on his soul power for movement. He walked down the stairwell, into the connecting passage that led to the main building. He had mentally mapped out every inch of the house and possible routes in and out of it. The area was a little bit secluded. The household staff were either busy with dinner prep or taking care of other things. No one had the time to use the old stairwell, reducing his chances of running into anyone. Ragnar's eyes went to the monitoring system a few distance away. Despite this a
Ch. 072 Falling into his trap
Kelvin pulled into the manor, stopping just before the portico of the main building. He noticed a strange car parked further away, near the exterior garage and assumed it was a car Ragnar borrowed from one of his roommates. “He's a sucker, trash of the highest order, but he sure knew how to keep wealthy old money friends.” Perhaps if his tone wasn't so snarky, he would have managed to hide the jealousy dripping from every word. He never understood it. Ragnar was obviously unable to make anything good out of his life, but his two roommates were fiercely loyal and protective, each of them from powerful families in the top ten list of most powerful organizations in Eadom. They were cold to the rest, not allowing other people to come close to them. Their cordiality was always surface level, even with heirs from powerful families of similar standing. But with Ragnar, they lowered their guards, always playful and genuinely cared for him. In the past, one had even mocked Kelvin saying he
Ch. 073 Feeling your world burn
Ragnar’s expression remained manic, not revealing the fact that every calculation he made since today led up to the stab just now. Every word, every pause, every forced smile had been a thread pulled tight for this moment. “Since we were kids, you kept attacking and suppressing me,” he said, voice low and trembling. “I kept giving in because I’m your elder brother, and I’m expected to care for you. Understand you!” Ragnar’s voice broke on the last word, raw and ragged. “I did everything to keep the peace and make you happy. And what did you do? You went behind me, making out with the girl I liked, playing house with her and messing around. You even laughed about it, calling me an idiot to my face.” Kelvin was in deep pain, both from the dagger, and Ragnar’s hand which was clamped around his throat like a vice. Each breath came as a wet, ragged gasp. Meanwhile, the specialized dagger drank quickly, absorbing as much blood as Ragnar would need for the ritual. The blade hummed fain
Ch. 074 A heart filled with hatred
Mathilda felt the world blur before her eyes. The words kept ringing in her ears, like an endless echo bouncing off the walls. “No. This can’t be happening. My son,” she pointed at Kelvin, finger shaking, eyes filled with desperation and panic. “He has a very important tournament. How can you stand there and talk such nonsense to me?” The junior doctor sighed. His shoulders taut, a hint of impatience showing in the way he slightly steepled his fingers. “We’re just doctors. We didn’t inflict the injury on him. We already saved his life and ensured it wouldn’t leave lasting damage. The most important thing right now is that he’s alive.” Mathilda screamed out, the sound raw and animalistic. She grabbed a vase off the side table and hurled it to the wall. Porcelain exploded into shards that skittered across the floor. Her chest was heaving, her breathing fast and disturbed. Her eyes were red, a hint of madness visible in them, bright and unfocused. She gasped, her nose flared. Eve
Ch. 075 Encountering an abyssal viper
Ragnar followed the directions programmed into the car, and found himself in a mountain resort that time had forgotten. The route was lonely, and rural. The villages he passed hadn’t seen much development. There were actually houses built with cement and bricks still in existence, walls cracked, paint peeling, roofs patched with aluminum. The deeper he travelled, the road narrowed until it became all stone paths and forests on both sides. Trees pressed close, their branches forming a tunnel that swallowed the sky. Along the way, there were satellite monitors and espionage masts mounted at strategic points, black metal glinting between leaves, showing that this seemingly rural area was far from ordinary. Ragnar followed the track till he came to a giant black wall. The car ground to a halt with a hiss of brakes. “Where’s the entrance?” He muttered, getting down from the vehicle. The air smelled of ghost pine and something suspicious. The wall was more than forty feet tall, and
Ch. 076 Perfect cage
Six feet away from her, Ragnar sent a strand of burning soul power to probe her aura. The thread of energy brushed against her skin like invisible fingers. Her face darkened, visibly displeased. “Ragnar Simp. You’ve gotten really bold. Even daring to launch a sneak mental attack on this goddess.” Ragnar scoffed and nodded. ‘Yeah. It’s definitely her.’ The aura was hers. Hot, sharp, full of pride that refused to bend. He increased his pace, his steps sure and confident. Although he didn’t know whether she had an ulterior motive for tagging along after he’d repeatedly told her he needed privacy, he was no longer as apprehensive. Worry had drained out of him. As long as it was her, he was confident of being able to deal with her and defend against her. He knew her temper and limits. Vireille’s lips curled slightly. “Are you scared of me?” She gestured to the surroundings with her whip, letting the leather snap once against stone. “There are only the both of us here. I can kill
Ch. 077 Her or not?
Ragnar’s footsteps were careful and calculated as he entered. Each step landed light on the stone, the sound muffled. He noticed Vireille staring at him with a complicated expression in her eyes, something sharp and soft tangled together. “Why do I feel like you’re planning something I wouldn’t like?” Vireille smiled broadly, too bright to be honest. “How could that be? I specially made this trip after dropping Nika off, racing against time. Although I don’t know the caliber of pill you want to refine, I think it’s better if someone stays with you. If there’s an emergency, or you suddenly slump from exhaustion, there should be someone close by to take care of you and send you to safety.” Ragnar kept staring steadily at her. She was lying. Something felt off in the way her smile didn’t reach her eyes, in the way she answered too fast. But after checking her aura, he had confirmed that it was indeed the real Vireille Tempest standing before him. “No. You can’t stay with me,” Ragn
Ch. 078 The price of freedom
Stabbing pains ran through his body, spreading from his lower belly where his empty cultivation core was supposed to be. Each pulse felt like a blade twisting deeper. Another scream tore off his throat, ragged and raw. His eyes rolled back in his head, his pants heavy and agonizing. The air scraped his lungs. His eyes had turned red, sweat matting his scalp. “Arrrgh.” Ragnar’s fists tightened on the edges of the bath tub, knuckles red and burnt from the heat radiating off the stone. Normally, Ragnar had a very high pain tolerance threshold. Even after his rebirth, he’d gone through the greatest pain and returned stronger. He’d broken bones and reset them himself. He'd endured all kinds of hell in three past. His mind was stronger than most people. Yet at this moment he was breaking apart, piece by jagged piece. “Why? Why is it like this,” he growled, voice shredded. His heart was boiling, even hotter than the water he was sitting in. The water in the tub was literally cooki
Ch. 079 Miscalculated
Ragnar kept trying to move his finger, but it seemed like the hot water and herb combination had completely damaged his nerves. None of them was doing what he wanted them to do. His hand stayed slack, useless. As if he was undergoing atrophy and nerve damage, the connection between mind and flesh severed. His heart began to pound erratically. He had carefully read through the manuscript. Memorized every line. How come he hadn’t seen such side effects listed? He had also checked ancient scrolls about the herbs, their indications and contraindications, cross referencing until his eyes burned. Everything had seemed alright to him. The risk was there, but this was not the risk described. What was happening now? Or was it because he had stayed too long before trying to reverse the ritual? It had been more than a decade since Mathilda performed the ritual and stole his foundation. A decade of Kelvin using his light. A decade of his meridians sitting empty, collecting dust. A cautionar
Ch. 080 He's trash
Mathilda didn’t look like she was joking. Her lips had a vicious curl to them, her eyes glinting like broken glass in sunlight. She stopped beside Kelvin and patted his face softly, fingers warm against his skin. “Baby, just focus on recovery and acing your tournament. Leave trash to mom. Mommy will clear it out for you.” A soft smile appeared at the edges of Kelvin’s lips. “Mom, you’re here.” Mathilda sat beside him. The chair didn’t creak under her weight. She was too controlled for that. “How do you feel now?” “Exhausted,” his brows furrowed, lips tight and pale. “I feel like my muscles weighed tons. I also feel very weak and empty. As if I lost something.” Mathilda’s gaze sharpened, vicious calculations visible in them. She leaned forward a fraction. “You feel empty?” Kelvin nodded. “I feel very exhausted. Like I ran a marathon.” “You feel empty and tired?” Mathilda’s eyes narrowed, gaze pinched together. “Try pushing out energy. How’s your cultivation?” Kelvin’s h
