Chapter Twenty-One: Goddess of Survival
A few seconds later Jane's eyelids flickered open, her eyes gazing into Jack's. She creased her eyebrows, feeling pain from the bruises all over her body. There was also a contusion on the right side of her head, causing excruciating pain.Jack heaved a sigh of relief, saying, “It's good you're still alive. I was scared for a moment.”Jane’s eyes darted around, catching sight of the car which was some meters away from them. She groaned, asking, “You came… for me?”“Yes,” he replied. “I couldn't allow my personal assistant to die.”Jane inhaled and got up slowly, clutching her head in pain. She looked around, searching for the hardware flash drive she'd used as a bridge to copy Night Garden’s data. But there was no sign of it. Her pupils dilated, afraid her boss would berate her for that carelessness.“What's wrong?” Jack asked, narrowing his eyes.“The bridge…” she answered, lowering her head. “It's gone.”The statement almost shattered his heart, causing his facial muscles to twitch.
Chapter Twenty-Two: Enemy Fire
Rapid fires echoed within the woods, each gunshot hammering Jack's heart like a hammer on an anvil. For the first time in his life, he was terrified. He sat behind the car, his entire body shuddering like a leaf blown by the wind.Brandon also sat beside him, reloading his automatic rifle—his fifth time doing so. Unfortunately, luck was no longer on his side as the other men were well hidden. They'd learnt from the mistakes of their dead comrades to stay behind the trees, putting their years of experience into the gunfight.Jack's eyes scrutinized the woods, searching for Jane who had been seen darting around some minutes ago. She was nowhere to be found, vanished into the darkness.Bullets continued to ram against the car, causing it to shudder. At first, they left only light dents on the car's surface… then they became gaping holes. In no time Brandon and Jack would have bullets penetrating them, if nothing was done.‘Come on…’ Jack prayed inwardly, hoping Jane succeeded with whatev
Chapter Twenty-Three: The Drive at the Last Hour
Puffs of smoke billowed out through the woods, bright crimson flames burning with hard crackles. Ten corpses lay on the ground, the flames licking at them. It was only a matter of time before they were reduced to ashes.Jack’s eyes drifted from Josh to the entire woods, resting finally on the Night Garden perched atop the plateau. Although it was at least a kilometer away, he could still see the resplendent light from the building and surroundings.A cold smile played at the end of his lips as he turned around. “Let's get out of here,” he said. “The others are definitely heading here.”The gunfight had lasted for five minutes, enough time for Winston's henchmen to rally themselves and head down to the woods. Hence, the best option was to leave the Night Garden's vicinity. It took a couple of seconds for Jack to realize his car had been destroyed. Bullet holes perforated its body, tyres burst and the engine was aflame. A thick acrid smoke trailed out of the bonnet, clogging up his brea
Chapter Twenty-Five: Spider and Fly
Josh staggered to his feet, his entire body searing from pain. He'd suffered burns from the explosion, his body in a very bad condition. He couldn't even stand properly and let out raspy breaths from time to time. He'd seen his entire life flash before him, the female attacker had aimed the KNP90 submachine gun at him. At that time, his heart was gripped by such terror that it almost burst from it. If not for her other accomplice—who was obviously superior to her—he would have already been dead. And he had the man to thank… if not, he'd be dead by now.He watched as the gunmen whom he'd hired rushed out of the woods in their ATVs, chasing after the attackers whom this insanely skilled driver had somehow rescued.“Are you okay, Sir?” One of the gunmen asked, the vehicles screeching to a halt. The SUV which they were supposed to chase had long vanished, its taillights lost in the darkness.“Okay?” Josh gritted his teeth, glaring at the man. He struggled to stand upright, but his lanky b
Chapter Twenty-Five: The Secret Safehouse
The SUV’s headlights glared through the night as the vehicle veered across the highway into Jack's estate. It didn't slow even when it approached the towering perimeter gates, its engine revving softly. The infrared sensors embedded in the stone pillars flared to life, detecting the massive heat signature and the heavy steady approach of the SUV. With a long hiss that echoed through the quiet acreage, the gates began to retract. The sensors were so advanced that the gates were fully opened before the SUV’s bumper reached the threshold. The vehicle didn't even have to tap the brakes as it surged onto the estate, its tyres transitioning to the silent, premium pavement of the long winding driveway.Behind them, the sensors registered that the ‘object’ had passed, and the heavy iron wings hissed shut, sealing the world out once again.Jane said to Jack, “I'll get professionals to reset this mansion’s system. We'd need biometrics instead of sensors from anyone…’“Yes, it makes sense,” Jack
Chapter Twenty-Six: The Devil You Know and the Angel You Know
Josh's eyes darted between the people surrounding him, unable to hold their gaze for a few seconds. Several times the thought of escaping crossed his mind, but he remembered someone else was standing behind him. He'd already learnt the hard way he wouldn't be able to even budge with that man keeping a close eye on him. Besides everyone in their room was a professional… except of course, Jack who was their boss. He'd seen how the woman with blue eyes and the lanky man had taken down ten highly trained men.“So…” Jack's voice jolted him from his frenzy, causing him to swallow hard. The smell of ozone had thickened, an electric spark in his gut. He gripped the armrests tightly, lowering his head slightly.“Why are you not talking?” Jack asked. “You promised to reveal everything to me… In fact, you gave me a crucial piece of information…”He placed his right hand under his chin, his eyes gazing down at Josh. His expression wasn't mean, as if he was staring at an enemy. Instead, it was neu
Chapter Twenty-Seven: The Message
Jack left the safehouse, escorted by Jane and Kate. He was driven to the mansion where he alighted from the vehicle and walked into the building. Jane followed him, while Kate drove back to the safehouse. After walking a few steps to his bedroom, Jack realized Jane was following him. She was walking so lightly, he didn't even hear her footsteps.Turning around, he asked, “Why are you following me, Jane? You're supposed to be resting.”“Your life is more important,” she replied. “We can't underestimate Winston or any of his allies… Even the most powerful people have been assassinated across history.”He opened his mouth to refute—to remind her it's only been a day since he humiliated Winston. When would the man find time to hire assassins? Then he realized he'd planned an infiltration a few hours later…So, he kept shut and nodded. “But don't overwork yourself,” he said. “If you feel tired from your task, you can tell me. We can always wait.”Jane felt something fuzzy and creased her b
Chapter Twenty-Eight: Threat Calls
He sat upright, staring at the screen for some time. This was definitely the same person who had called him a few hours ago. He should have told Jane, but she was on a mission back then… and he'd eventually forgotten. He really wanted to tell her right now, but he didn't want to stress the young woman. She was already standing guard outside his door, neglecting her own sleep. He was about to sleep when he remembered the danger everyone was in. The anonymous person had mentioned an explosion…‘Did he plant a bomb in here?’ he narrowed his eyes. ‘Without my notice?’At this point, telling Jane was the option. So he stood up, walking toward the door. But another buzz stopped him right in his tracks. He stared at the phone's screen, his legs wobbling under him.Another message had dropped and it read: “You have five minutes left.”A cold sweat broke out all over his body as he trembled. A bomb had been planted in the estate with a countdown of five minutes! Even though he told Jane right
Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Pitchfork Gang
The black sedan cut through the heavy downpour, its tyres splashing through oil-soaked puddles as it swerved into the industrial wasteland of the Gang District. The streetlights were like resplendent stars, illuminating the night. There were very few vehicles on the highway, the soft revving of the car echoing for dozens of meters.Winston sat in the back, his head resting against the cold glass. Every vibration of the car on the cracked asphalt was nightmarish, a jarring shockwave sent straight to his shattered jaw.He grimaced, touching his jaw with his right hand. “He really dared to arrest me…” he said in a muffled voice, feeling a sharp sting. “And the cops… they didn't dare accept my bribe.”He couldn't help but wonder what had gone wrong. He had people in the police, yet they had arrested him brazenly, asking him to leave his mansion for good. It seemed Jack had more powerful allies than he did, even though he had been in the business for years.“I'll have to find out what make
Chapter Thirty: Family Vacation
The Rolls-Royce zoomed across the highway, bidding goodbye to the luxurious mansion. Its tyres rolled across the asphalt as it left the industrial decay of Kansas City behind. The sun peeked through the foggy clouds, the drizzle wetting everything and pattering against the windshields.Just as he'd promised Jane, they were now headed for their vacation. Kate sat in the cockpit, her left hand clutching the steering wheel. She was casually holding a chocolate bar with her free hand, occasionally biting into it.Her carefree behavior made Jack scrunch his face, wondering if he'd misheard her background. She didn't seem like the expert automotive engineer on her ‘resumé’.Jane sat beside her with her arms crossed, her green eyes fixated on the road ahead. Her grey hair was wallowing in the wind. Jack couldn't help but wonder how many wigs and contact lenses this lady had. When they'd first met, she'd been wearing a black wig and grey contact lenses.‘She’s really a master of disguise,’ he
