Chapter 31
Not long William left his family house and drove straight to the auction. The venue was larger than he expected. High ceilings. Clean white walls. Rows of chairs arranged in neat sections facing a small stage at the front. People were already starting to fill the seats, most of them dressed in expensive suits and carrying folders or tablets, the kind of people who came to these events with money ready to spend and no patience for wasting time. William walked in through the main entrance and scanned the room. His eyes landed on them almost immediately. Benjamin was sitting three rows from the front. And seated beside him, perfectly composed and looking like she belonged there, was Lydia. The moment Lydia saw him, her entire face changed. Not in a dramatic way. She did not gasp or stand or point. But the disgust was visible. It moved across her expression fast and clear, the way a person looks at something they stepped in by accident and cannot believe they have to acknowledge.

When it got to Lydia and Benjamin's turn, the auctioneer straightened the papers in front of him and began reading from the submitted list in a clear, carrying voice. “The investor for this next submission has selected three companies for today. Pets.com, Delivery.Go, and Garment For All.” He looked up briefly before continuing. “The total investment being placed across those three companies is thirty million dollars each, bringing the combined investment figure to ninety million dollars.” He paused for a moment, letting the number settle in the room. “In addition to that, the investor has purchased shares worth sixty million dollars, which brings the full total of today's commitment to one hundred and fifty million dollars.” He looked toward the owners of the three companies seated in their designated section. “The owners of the listed companies have reviewed the offer and have accepted. This investment is confirmed.” The gavel came down hard on the table. The room erupted.
Chapter 33
The event moved forward without much energy behind it. One by one, companies came to the front of the room and laid out their ideas, their numbers, their pitches. And one by one, the room received them with the same polite, distant silence that people give to things they have already decided they are not interested in. The top investors had gotten what they came for. Their folders were closed, their pens were capped, and most of them were sitting back in their chairs with the particular kind of stillness that means a person is physically present but mentally already somewhere else. The excitement that had filled the room during Lydia's announcement had long since cooled into something closer to patience. Benjamin leaned toward Lydia and dropped his voice low. “Is this not a complete waste of time at this point?” He glanced toward the front of the room where yet another presenter was adjusting the microphone nervously. “Think about it. Even if William has any money left, even if
Chapter 34
At that moment The laughter had not fully died down when the CEO of Testimo cleared his throat. He stood at that microphone with the particular stillness of a man who has already been humiliated enough times that one more round of it does not knock him over anymore. He knew what the company was. He was not standing there with any illusions about it. It produced nothing. It moved nothing. The customers had stopped coming so long ago that the absence of them had become the new normal. Every week that passed added to a debt that was already sitting on his chest like a stone. He just needed something. Whatever small amount he could walk away with to justify having built anything at all. “You are correct,” he said, his voice steady even if the room was not fully listening anymore. “The debt to the workers is real. One hundred thousand dollars. Six months of unpaid salaries.” He paused. “However, I have spoken with the workers directly. They have agreed to accept half. Three months
Chapter 35
The silence that followed William's offer lasted only a second before the room broke open with noise.More Jaws dropped. People looked at each other. A few laughed the kind of laugh that is really just shock wearing a different face. The whispers from before came back louder and less polite, no longer bothering to stay below the surface.Benjamin stood up.He did not need to. Nobody had asked him to say anything. But he stood up anyway, pushing back his chair with enough energy that it scraped loud against the floor, and he turned to face William's direction with something between a smile and a sneer sitting on his face.“I know I am not supposed to involve myself in this,” he said, projecting his voice the way a man does when he wants everyone in the room to hear him but wants to pretend he is only speaking to one person. “But I genuinely feel like you have lost your mind. Like, I am looking at you right now and I am seriously concerned.” He tilted his head slightly. “You want to
Chapter 36
“No problem at all,” William said. “If that is what you want, I will send you your portion right now.”The CEO smiled. But underneath that smile, he was doing something else entirely. He was praying. Quietly and urgently, the way a man prays when he knows the window is small and closing. William still had time to walk this back. The documents were signed but people found ways to undo things when they wanted to badly enough, and the CEO knew better than anyone that the rational case for undoing this deal was overwhelming. There was no equipment worth speaking of in that building. What had not been sold off in the lean years had simply deteriorated past the point of usefulness. No materials. No supply chain. No customer relationships that had survived the long drought. No production floor that could be turned on tomorrow and expected to work. The hundred thousand going to the workers was essentially a gift with no return attached to it. The fifty thousand for the company itself was b

At that moment William turned around.Lydia was standing a few feet away with her arms folded and her head tilted at the angle she always used when she wanted to look amused without appearing to try. Benjamin was beside her, hands in his pockets, wearing the expression of a man who had already decided how this conversation was going to go.It was Lydia who had been clapping.Benjamin looked at her sideways. “Smart move?” he said, his voice carrying just enough edge to make it a challenge. “That is what you are calling it?”Lydia dropped her hands and shrugged one shoulder. “Smart or dumb, I said either. But let us be honest.” She looked at William directly, her voice sharpening into something cleaner and more deliberate. “Nobody in their right mind buys a company that is already finished. No serious analysis. No due diligence. Nothing. He just wanted to prove a point, to show his face and make a statement, and instead he walked out of here a hundred and fifty thousand dollars light
Chapter 38
At that moment Lydia's voice came out sharp and immediate.“How?” She stepped forward slightly, her arms still folded, her entire posture radiating the kind of confidence that comes from believing the ground beneath you is solid. “How exactly are you going to make us pay? You and I both know you have nothing. No leverage. No power. No money.” She gestured toward him with one open hand. “If you had money, real money, you would not have just thrown a hundred and fifty thousand dollars at the cheapest, most desperate company sale in this entire building. You would not be walking out of here with a dead business under your arm like it means something.” She shook her head, almost laughing. “You have nothing. So stop pretending like you are going to do something to us, because we both know you are not.”She paused, her expression shifting slightly into something that might have been pity if it had been softer.“I was even considering giving you something,” she continued. “Maybe three pe

William stopped. He turned back toward the noise and walked closer, weaving through the small crowd that had started to gather near the side entrance of the building. What he saw when he got close enough was controlled chaos.More than twenty bodyguards, all of them dressed in dark suits that fit too well to be cheap, had formed a tight circle around someone on the ground. They were not letting anyone through. Anyone who tried to lift a phone got a hand in front of the lens immediately. Anyone who leaned in too close got pushed back firmly, not violently, but with the kind of authority that said the conversation was not up for debate. They were creating a wall between whatever was happening inside that circle and the rest of the world outside it.William moved to the edge of the circle and looked between two of the guards.A man was on the ground.Middle-aged. Expensive suit. The kind of watch on his wrist that cost more than most people made in a year. But none of that mattered righ

At that moment the secretary's expression curdled the moment the words left William's mouth. She turned toward him slowly, like someone who had just heard something deeply offensive and wanted to make sure the person responsible understood exactly what they had done. Her jaw was set tight and her eyes swept over William from head to toe with the kind of look that strips a person down to nothing.“Get away from here,” she said, her voice low and precise and absolutely venomous. “You Con artist. That is what you are. A con artist who saw an opportunity and decided to wander over here and insert yourself into something that has absolutely nothing to do with you.”She pointed toward the edge of the crowd, her finger sharp and unwavering.“Do you have any idea who this man is? Do you think you are going to walk over here and put your hands on him like he is some ordinary person you found on a street corner?” Her voice rose. “Get out of here. Right now. Before I tell them to physically re
