The Ancient Door
SERAPHINE'S POV She looked at Vesper, her eyes red but determined. “We cannot wait anymore,” she said. “We have to find him. We have to know what happened.”Vesper nodded. She walked to the old shelf and pulled out the thick black book they had found earlier. She opened it carefully on the table. The candlelight made the old pages glow softly.“We start here,” Vesper said. “The book talks about doors between worlds. It says there is an ancient door not far from here. It is hidden in the ruins but it is not easy to reach. There will be puzzles and challenges–the door only opens for those who truly want to cross.”Seraphine stepped closer. She read the words with Vesper. Her heart beat fast. “Then we go,” she said. “Right now, I do not care how hard it is. Kane needs us.”They left the hideout together. The night was dark and full of smoke. They moved carefully through the shadows. Vesper’s crimson power helped hide them. Seraphine wrapped her own shadows around them like a protective
Back In Time
Seraphine held Kane’s hand tighter. Tears fell onto his skin. “You can do this,” she said. “I know you can. You are stronger than you think. Come back Kane–Malachar is already on the loose and everything is being destroyed. I care about you so much and we need you here.” She kept talking, telling him stories. She told him she was waiting for him and believed in him. Vesper joined her. She spoke to Kane too. “You are not alone,” she said. “We are fighting for you on this side. Seraphine is here, we need you. Do not give up. Come back to us.” Seraphine kept holding his hand. She pressed her forehead against it. “Please,” she whispered. “Come back. I am here, am waiting.” Seraphine was still holding Kane’s hand when suddenly the atmosphere shifted again. The Grey Man’s shadow appeared. It did not speak at first, It simply raised one pale hand. The space in front of them shimmered like water disturbed by a stone, a vision appeared. Seraphine saw Kane. He was standing in a grey, li
The Weight of What Was Seen
Kane’s arms wrapped around Seraphine slowly, like he was still not sure his body was really here.He was weak and his muscles felt heavy, like they had not been used in days but the warmth of her body against his was real. Her heartbeat against his chest and the way she held him like she was afraid he would disappear again, was so real.Seraphine buried her face in his neck. Her tears soaked into his shirt. “You are back,” she kept whispering. “You are really back. Do not ever scare me like that again, Kane. Please.”Vesper stood a few steps away, giving them space. Her crimson eyes watched the door and the corners of the room. She was still alert, the Grey Man’s shadow might return at any moment.Kane held Seraphine tighter. He breathed in the scent of her hair—dust, smoke, for a long moment, he said nothing and just held her. He needed this, he needed to feel that she was safe. “I saw things,” he whispered again, his voice hoarse and rough. “I saw a future. Seven years from now, Ma
Loyal Servant
Malachar walked slowly through the ashes of what used to be a thriving town. The ground was still hot beneath him, but the flames no longer burned his skin. He had become something beyond flesh and blood now–something eternal.Behind him, the army of the dead marched in utter silence. Thousands of the dead—men, women, children, and soldiers—shuffled forward like broken puppets. Their hollow red eyes burned in the darkness like dying embers from hell itself. They made no sound, they simply obeyed.Malachar stopped at the edge of the ruined town square. A single church bell lay cracked on the ground. He looked at it for a long moment, then crushed it under his heel.“This is what your god could not protect,” he said quietly to the empty air. “This is what your prayers were worth.”A new figure approached from the shadows. Tall, dressed in rich black robes trimmed with silver. His face was handsome in a sharp, dangerous way. High Priest Cael–once a loyal servant of the Church, now someth
Price of Leaving
“We’re not ready for this,” Seraphine whispered, her voice cracking with fear. She tightened her grip on Kane’s waist, fingers digging desperately into his shirt as if the night itself might rip him away again.“But we have no choice" she said. The first riddle appeared in glowing letters across the arch.“I am the chain that binds the strong and the weak alike. I can break empires or build them. I am given freely but can never be taken by force. What am I?”Vesper answered first. “Loyalty,” she said. “It binds people more than any chain.”The runes glowed brighter, the arch accepted the answer. The second riddle came immediately.“I speak without voice. I can travel faster than any horse. I can break hearts or heal them. I can start wars or end them. What am I?”Kane thought for a moment, then spoke. “Words,” he said. “The things we say to each other. The promises we make, the lies we tell ourselves.”The arch shimmered again–It accepted.Seraphine stepped forward for the third riddl
Blood and Shadows
The lieutenant—one of High Priest Cael’s most trusted men, a tall, sharp-faced man named Commander Garrick—smiled with cold satisfaction. His silver armor gleamed in the firelight from the distant burning villages. “The Tenth Kane returns at last,” he said, his voice dripping with mockery. “Lord Cael will be pleased. He has been waiting to personally break you.”Seraphine’s breath trembled. Fear, flooded her veins. She gripped Kane’s arm tighter, trying to steady both of them. “Stay behind me,” she whispered to him. “Please. You are still too weak.”Commander Garrick raised his glowing sword. “Take the necromancer alive if possible,” he ordered. “Kill the women. Cael wants the shadow witch’s head as a trophy, the keeper can be a bonus.”The soldiers took one synchronized step forward–crossbows clicked.Seraphine screamed and unleashed what little shadows she had left. They lashed out like desperate whips, wrapping around the legs of the nearest soldiers. Two men stumbled and one fell
Blackout
Seraphine’s blood left a dark trail on the forest floor as Kane half-carried her deeper into the trees, his newly restored system power flickering weakly like a candle fighting against the wind.Every step sent fresh pain through Seraphine’s side. The crossbow bolt was still lodged just below her ribs—warm blood soaked through her clothes and dripped onto the leaves with every movement. She tried to walk on her own, but her legs kept buckling. Kane’s arm around her waist was the only thing keeping her upright. His breathing was heavy and labored, he was still weak from his return, but he refused to let her go.Vesper moved ahead of them, her crimson eyes scanning the darkness. She cut through thick branches with her blade to clear a path. “Keep moving,” she whispered urgently. “The soldiers are close. I can hear their voices.”Kane nodded without speaking. He focused on putting one foot in front of the other. Seraphine’s weight against him was a reminder of how real this was, how clo
The Fragment’s Whisper
Kane’s hand was still locked around Seraphine’s throat. His fingers pressed harder, crushing her windpipe with terrifying strength. Seraphine’s eyes widened in pure terror as she clawed desperately at his wrist, her nails drawing blood. Black spots danced in her vision, her lungs screamed for air. “Seraphine…” The voice that came out of Kane’s mouth was not his own. It was deeper, colder, laced with ancient malice. “Run… before I kill you…” Inside his own body, the real Kane was screaming. No! Stop! This is not me! He fought the Malachar's fragment with everything he had, but it was like trying to push back a flood with bare hands. The fragment had seized control during the blackout. It wanted her dead–it wanted to break him completely. Vesper lunged forward with a cry, her crimson blade flashing. “Kane! Fight it!” She slammed her shoulder into him, knocking his hand away from Seraphine’s throat. Seraphine collapsed to her knees, gasping and coughing violently, one hand
System Ignite
Kane reacted to pure instinct. He raised his hand. The newly restored system power surged inside him like fire igniting dry tinder–time seemed too slow. The scout pulled the trigger and the bolt flew forward but Kane was faster. System Restoration Progress: Level 4 Achieved A loud, satisfying notification rang clearly in his mind. Counterstrike
“This ends tonight,” Kane said. The attack began.Kane raised his hand and the ground in front of the Church outpost exploded with sharp bone spikes. Several guards screamed as the spikes pierced their legs, pinning them in place. The system power inside him felt alive, warm, and hungry for more. He stepped forward, Seraphine staying close to his side even though her wound still hurt. Vesper moved like a crimson shadow on his other side, her blade already drawn. The outpost guards shouted in panic. Torches flickered wildly as men rushed to defend the wooden walls. Crossbows clicked, bolts flew toward them through the night air.Kane felt one bolt graze his arm. Pain flared, but the Necrotic Feedback ability triggered instantly. A dark pulse of energy exploded outward from his body. The nearest guards staggered, their movements slowing as if they were suddenly moving through thick mud.“Push forward!” Kane shouted. His voice was low and steady, but inside he felt the thrill of power
