Chapter 51
BOOOOOOM!Another massive explosion rocked the giant cavern. The sound was so loud it made Lucien’s ears ring. Dust and small rocks rained down from the high stone ceiling. The glowing blue and green mushrooms that lit the Forgotten Village flickered wildly, like candles caught in a strong wind.Grand Inquisitor Vane was outside. He was using powerful sun-bombs to blast his way through the fifty-foot-tall stone gates at the top of the village. The Empire had finally found the hidden survivors, and they were trying to break in.Inside the grand mausoleum, at the very top of the village, Lucien stood before Matriarch Elara. The blind old woman sat in her chair carved from Titan bone.Lucien’s eyes burned with a purple-black fire. "Show me the door to the First King's Tomb, Matriarch," he demanded. "Let me worry about the blood sacrifice. We do not have time!"BOOOOOOM! The floor shook again. Kael, the scarred hunter, grabbed the stone wall to keep from falling over.Matriarch Elara did

"System," Lucien thought.[Ding!][System Command Accepted.][Analyzing Ancient Dialect and Blood-Script...][Translation Matrix Active. Overlaying translated text onto Host's vision.]Instantly, Lucien’s vision changed. A soft blue light swept across the walls. The chaotic, messy scratches began to glow. Above the scratches, neat, perfectly readable blue words appeared in the air.Lucien began to read.I am Lord Commander Varis of the Sun-Guard, the first block of text read. I refused to murder the true King in his sleep. For my loyalty, my eyes were burned out, and my wife was thrown into the pit. I die in the dark, but my honor remains in the light.Lucien’s breath hitched. He moved his eyes to the next block of blue text."I am High Scholar Elianor, Master of the Great Library, the wall read. The Usurper demanded I burn the ancient history books. He wanted to rewrite the past and pretend his dark magic was a gift from the heavens. I hid the true books. For the crime of remembering
Chapter 53
If the Warding Stone was broken, the village was no longer hidden. To the monsters in the deep, dark, bottomless pits of the Eternal Ossuary, ten thousand living humans had just suddenly appeared on their map. It was like ringing a giant dinner bell in a cavern full of starving demons."Lucien!"The hidden stone doors of the Archive burst open. Kael ran into the room. He was out of breath, and his face was completely pale. His hands shook as he held his bone spear."Kael! What is happening?" Lucien demanded."The lower tiers!" Kael yelled, his voice cracking with panic. "The ground broke open! A giant pit appeared in the center of the village!""Are monsters coming out?" Lucien asked, grabbing the God-Slaying Spear from his back."It is worse than normal monsters!" Kael cried. "It is an army! Skeletons! Thousands of them! And... and something is leading them. Something smart!"Lucien’s jaw tightened. "An Ossuary Warden."Lucien knew about Wardens. He had fought a lesser Grave-Warden w
Chapter 54
Lucien fell through the air like a dark rock dropped from the sky. The wind screamed past his ears. His liquid shadow-cloak whipped wildly around him.Far below, the Forgotten Village was completely covered in panic. It was a nightmare. The massive sinkhole at the bottom of the giant cavern was pouring out freezing grey mist. Out of that mist, the endless white river of skeletons marched forward. Clack. Clack. Clack. Thousands of bony feet hit the stone floor in perfect rhythm. They held rusted iron swords and broken shields. Their empty eye sockets glowed with a hungry, evil red light.Inside the village, people were running in every direction. The peaceful glow of the blue and green mushrooms was broken by the chaotic shadows of terrified humans.Matriarch Elara stood on a low stone platform near the center of the village. Even though she was blind, she could feel the terrible, cold magic rising from the bottom of the cavern. She held tightly to the shoulder of a young girl who act
Chapter 55
The shadow-knights were entirely immune to normal weapons. When the skeletons swung their rusted iron swords, the blades simply passed harmlessly through the black smoke of the shadow-knights' bodies. But the shadow-knights' glowing purple swords were completely solid. With single, clean swings, the shadow-knights cut dozens of skeletons in half. White bone turned to dust the moment the dark magic touched it. The shadow-knights formed a perfect, unbreakable wall of black iron and purple fire in front of the human defenders.Lucien did not just stand and watch. He moved. He pointed his left hand at the giant bone-troll that was about to crush the mother and her children."Burn," Lucien commanded.A stream of Hell-Fire Reign shot from his hand. The black and gold fire wrapped around the giant bone-troll. The monster did not even have time to swing its hammer. The divine dark fire melted its thick bones into a puddle of grey ash in exactly one second. The mother opened her eyes. She sa
Chapter 56
The villagers watching from below screamed in horror. Matriarch Elara gripped her chair tightly. But Lucien did not panic. He remembered the Enforced Evolution. He remembered the massive amount of holy energy he had eaten from the five hundred golden knights. He had mixed the holy light with the dark abyss inside his soul.As the giant scythe came down, Lucien opened his left hand. He did not call upon the dark shadows. He called upon the stolen sun.A blinding, brilliant flash of pure golden light erupted from Lucien’s hand. The Warden, a creature of absolute darkness, was completely blinded by the sudden burst of holy light. Its red eyes burned in pain. It flinched, missing its swing. The heavy scythe crashed into the stone roof inches away from Lucien’s side.At the exact same moment, Lucien pushed the golden light down into his own legs. The holy fire instantly melted the freezing Grave-Ice into steam.Lucien was free. He did not jump away. He stepped perfectly inside the Warden’
Chapter 57
The white-hot holy fire burned brightly at the top of the giant cavern. The massive stone gates were broken into pieces. Grand Inquisitor Valerius Vane stood at the top of the stairs, laughing his cruel, ugly laugh. Hundreds of Black Hounds howled, their red metal eyes glowing in the dark. The people of the Forgotten Village screamed in terror. They had just survived the giant undead Warden, and now the cruel Empire had broken into their home.Lucien did not panic. He looked up at the burning gates. His purple-black eyes were cold and focused."Shadows!" Lucien commanded. His voice cut through the loud explosions and the crying children. The 500 elite shadow-knights, who had just returned to his cloak, instantly exploded outward again. They flew up the steep, carved stone stairs. They moved like a river of black smoke and dark iron."Block the stairs!" Lucien roared. "Do not let a single dog pass!"The shadow-knights crashed into the front line of the Inquisitors. The sound of dark s

[Ding!][Sign-In Successful!][Congratulations! You have received a Mythic Tier Reward.][Reward Generated: The Army of Shadows.]Lucien read the words. Before he could even wonder what it meant, the ability activated. It did not activate slowly. It activated with absolute, terrifying violence.Lucien gasped. He dropped to one knee. His shadow, the normal, dark shape cast on the floor by the glowing mushrooms, suddenly disconnected from his boots. His shadow exploded. It expanded outward like a flood of black water. It shot across the smooth obsidian dais. It spilled over the edges into the dirt of the plaza. It kept growing. It moved faster than a running horse."Look!" Kael shouted, pointing at the ground. The villagers screamed and jumped back. Lucien’s shadow was covering the entire village square. It crept up the sides of the stone mausoleums. It crawled over the rope bridges. Within ten seconds, the entire floor of the massive cavern was covered in pure, pitch-black darkness.
Chapter 59
Guards dragged a wise-looking old man in scholar's robes onto the platform. The old man’s mouth was gagged with dirty cloth. He was a popular politician who had tried to help the poor people of the city. He had too much power. He was a threat to the Emperor."Banish him," the Emperor ordered. "Tell the city he ran away with stolen gold."Flash. The scholar was teleported to the graveyard to starve. The vision blurred again. Time skipped forward another hundred years.A new Emperor sat on the throne. He was drinking wine and laughing with his rich friends.Guards dragged a young, beautiful female general onto the platform. She wore shiny silver armor, but it was broken and covered in blood."You won the war, General Seraphina," the Emperor smiled cruelly. "The people love you. They chant your name in the streets. They love you more than they love me. I cannot have that. A sun cannot share the sky with a star.""I fought for you!" the General screamed, crying tears of betrayal. "I lost
Chapter 60
The vision faded like smoke in the wind.Lucien blinked his eyes. The bright, golden throne room of the capital was gone. The cruel face of his ancient ancestor was gone. He was back in the real world. He was standing on the smooth, black glass of the Imperial Banishment Dais. The cold air of the graveyard brushed against his face. But the heavy feeling in his heart did not go away. It felt like a massive stone was sitting in his chest. At the top of the giant cavern, the battle was loud, but it was very short.Grand Inquisitor Valerius Vane had ordered his men to charge. He thought he was going to slaughter a village of weak, starving rats. He thought his mechanical iron wolves and his holy sun-bombs would burn everything to ash. He was completely wrong.Lucien’s new power, the Mythic Tier [Army of Shadows], did not just block the attack. It destroyed the attackers in seconds.Tens of thousands of ghostly knights rushed up the carved stone stairs. They were made of soot-black smok
