BLOOD GOD REBORN CHAPTER TWENTY The List
"That's him," Corren said.Rendell was shorter than I had pictured. I don't know why I'd pictured anything. He camearound the corner of the south street with two other men and a cart that had seen better decades, one wheel slightly off true so it pulled left and he kept correcting it without looking down, theautomatic correction of someone who has made this route enough times that his body does itbefore his head notices the lean.We were in the shadow of the building opposite. Corren had found the position two hoursbefore Rendell arrived and we had stood in it and not spoken much. The night was cold in thespecific way that Voldimore gets cold in this season, not sharp, just a damp that finds the gapsin whatever you are wearing and settles there."When they open the south door," I said."I know," Corren said.We had done this before. Not this exact thing but the shape of it. Wait, watch, move whenthe door opens and the attention is on the delivery and the men doing the carrying
BLOOD GOD REBORN CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Eleven Words "Elara," the Blood Sage said. I heard it. I stood in the middle of the room with my coat still on and I heard it and the first thing my head did with it was nothing. Just the name sitting there. Then everything underneath the name started moving and I sat down on the bench by the door because standing felt like the wrong thing to be doing. "Elara Voss," I said. Not a question. "Yes." "Four months ago." "Four months ago Vael made the offer. Elara has not accepted. She has not refused. She has been holding the question for four months." Corren was standing near the window. He had his arms crossed and he was looking at the floor and doing the underwater thing, and I could see him working through the same sequence I was working through, all the conversations about Elara, all the assessments, the Blood Sage saying she is not running from you, she is deciding whether to run toward you, and underneath all of it now this, four months of Vael's offer sitting in Elara

Her GroundShe wrote four words. The archive reading room. That was the whole message, no time, noinstruction, just a location that told me three things before I had taken a step toward it: sheworked there, she had keys, and she had chosen a place where if anything went wrong theofficial explanation for her presence was already built in.Corren did not like it."She picked the location," he said. "You're walking into a room she controls with one exitthat we know of and you don't know who else she's told.""I know.""I'll be outside but outside is not inside, Draven. If something goes wrong inside thatbuilding—""I know, Corren."He made the sound he makes when he has said the thing and I have heard the thing and Iam going anyway. Then he pulled his coat and said he would take the east approach and watchthe servant entrance and I said fine and we left the tanner's yard for the last time because whenwe came back from this, whatever this was, we were not coming back to a room tha
BLOOD GOD REBORN CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Four words. *The archive reading room.* No time. No instruction. Just a location that told me three things before I'd taken a single step toward it: she worked there, she had keys, and she'd picked a place where her own presence would never need explaining. Corren didn't like it. "She picked the location," he said. "One exit we know of. You don't know who else she's told." "I know." "I'll take the east approach. Watch the servant entrance." He pulled his coat on, slower than he needed to, the way he always stalled when he had something else to say and wasn't going to say it. Eleven years chasing Vael does that to a man. It makes him careful in ways that look like caution and are actually something closer to old grief. "If something goes wrong in there…" "I know, Corren." "You don't," he said. Quiet. Not an argument, just a fact he was setting down and leaving there. Then he made the sound he makes when he's said the thing and I've heard the thing and I'm going anywa

The folder was thinner than I expected. Six pages, maybe seven, and she set it on the table between us like she was setting down something that might still bite."This is everything Dorn logged personally," she said. "Not the ledger copies. His own hand."I reached for it. She put two fingers on the cover, not stopping me, just marking the moment before I opened it."Once you've read it you can't decide you didn't," she said. "I want you to understand that before you turn the page.""I understood that three years ago."She took her hand back. The first page was a list of dates, no names, just dates and a single word beside each one. *Held. Held. Held. Consumed.* Then a gap of nine months and the pattern started again. I recognized the last date on the page. It was six days before my execution."He was tracking the interval," I said."He was tracking the cost." She reached across and turned to the second page before I'd finished with the first. "Look at the interval shrinking. Nine mon
Blood God Reborn Chapter Twenty-Four The Body She Can't Report
The Hollow Blade was still breathing when Corren came through the broken door, and the sound he made when he saw the wreckage wasn't the sound of a man surprised by violence. It was the sound of a man recognizing a face."That's not possible," he said."You know him."Corren didn't answer right away. He crossed the room in three strides and crouched over the man on the floor, and I watched something move through his expression that I hadn't seen on him in three years of sharing a tanner's yard and a cracked table. Not fear. Something closer to grief arriving late to a funeral it had missed the first time."Tarrick," he said, quiet, almost gentle, the way you'd say a name to someone sleeping. "Tarrick Voss."The man's eyes opened at the sound of it, just barely, glassy with blood loss, and something like recognition passed between them before his gaze slid past Corren and found me instead."Small city," he said, or tried to. Blood bubbled at the corner of his mouth on the last word."H
Blood God Reborn Chapter Twenty-Five What Corren Buried
Corren didn't say the name again for a long moment. He sat back on his heels, still crouched near Tarrick, and looked at his own hands like he was checking whether they still belonged to him."Say it," I said. "You've said everything else.""Halden." He said it flat, like setting down something heavy he'd been carrying too long to feel the weight of anymore. "Halden Rourke. We trained together before the Order split us into different companies. He was better than me at everything that mattered on a battlefield, and worse than me at everything that mattered off of one.""And you wrote to him," Maren said, "the night Draven was arrested.""Because I didn't trust the Order to actually get him out, and Halden had contacts that weren't Order contacts. Smugglers. People who moved things the garrison wasn't supposed to know about." Corren's voice had gone somewhere flatter still, a man reciting facts to keep from feeling them. "I asked him to get a message to Draven's cell before the executi
Blood God Reborn Chapter Twenty-Six The Bloodwood
They came for us before we reached the tree line. Not Vael's people this time. Something worse, in the way that animals are always worse than men, because men at least want something you can negotiate with. "Draven." Maren's voice, tight, already moving. "Those aren't wolves." She was right. Wolves don't stand nine feet at the shoulder. Wolves don't have too many joints in their front legs, extra articulation that let them fold low and spring in a way nothing built by ordinary breeding should be able to do. There were four of them at the edge of the firelight, eyes catching the flame in a wrong color, not gold, not green. Red. "Corrupted stock," Corren said, already up, already reaching for steel. "The Order used to cull these out of the border forests. Something's been feeding them for a long time." "Feeding them what," I said, though some part of me already suspected the answer, the same part of me that had been counting a rising number under my own ribs for two days. "Gu
Blood God Reborn ·mChapter Twenty-Seven The City of Voldimore, After Dark*
We came back through the eastern gate a little before midnight, and even at that hour the city hadn't gone quiet. Voldimore never really did. Lantern light spilled out of the lower quarter in long orange ribbons, vendors still working the night market that ran along Cinder Row, and somewhere past the rooftops a bell was tolling the hour in the flat, unhurried way city bells toll when nothing is actually wrong yet."You need to disappear for a few hours," Corren said, low, walking close beside me with his hood up the way I had mine up. "Whatever happened out there in the tree line, whatever that title means, we don't need it announced before we understand it ourselves.""I'm aware.""Are you." He glanced sideways at me. "Because you're walking through the lower quarter like a man who just found out he might not be the only one of his kind, and that's not a face people forget seeing twice."He wasn't wrong. I made myself slow my pace, made myself look at the city instead of through it.
Blood God Reborn Chapter Twenty-Eight The Wall Breaks
The wall at the north gate stood thirty feet high and had held for two hundred years, and from the top of the stair leading up to the parapet I could already see it wasn't going to matter tonight whether it held or not, because the tide wasn't going to bother testing the stone at all.It was going to come over the top."Archers to the crenels!" The captain who'd conscripted me was three ranks up the stair, shouting himself hoarse. "Front line braces at the gate arch, second line to the flanks, someone get me a count on how many of these things actually have wings—"They didn't have wings. What the front rank of the tide had instead was height, wrong-jointed legs coiling and releasing in bounds that ate the ground between the tree line and the wall in a fraction of the time they should have needed, and behind them, past the first wave, more shapes than I could count in the dark, a wall of red eyes stretching back into the forest like the tree line itself had grown teeth.*[BLOOD SENSE
