Chapter 41
Manuel did not say anything even after what Penelope said and continued to eat and then Penelope continued, “Honestly, I’m sorry. I just want us to be friends this time, is it too much to ask?”Manuel still didn’t say a word as he was solely focused on finishing his meal and getting back to work. Penelope just sighed and watched as Manuel stood up and went to clear his bills before leaving like she was never there.Penelope stood up and also returned home and only met her mother at home. She went to her room to change into a more suitable cloth and returned back to the living room to join her mother in watching the television. She was watching the television but her mind was still on how to get Manuel and so she picked up her phone and typed to Manuel, “Possible to meet at Crystal Sky Hotel? Their restaurant is marvelous, you’d love it.”She sent the message and continued to watch the series with her mother and then, her phone’s notification bell rang and she clicked into it. Penelope
Chapter 42
Penelope stood at the edge of the hallway staring at her phone longer than she should have. The message was still there, she swallowed once and locked the screen. She returned back, Manuel was still seated exactly where she left him. Just calm and unmoving like nothing around him had weight and that steadiness unsettled her more than anger would have. The chair scraped slightly as she sat. Manuel did not even ask where she went nor did he look curious. This made Penelope feel like she was being observed as she shifted uncomfortably in her seat. She then cleared her throat softly, “I forgot something upstairs.”His gaze lifted slightly from his phone and Penelope held it. “There’s a private lounge. Just for members.” A pause and then Manuel said, “Okay.” One word, no question nor resistance and her fingers tightened under the table. She stood up first and said, “If you don’t mind, accompany me please.”Manuel stood up much to her shock and followed her.The corridors upstairs were qui
Chapter 43
Penelope stood in the middle of room 1709 as the camera flashes filled the whole space. The sound of different voices collided with each other, sharp and very disorganized but none of it seemed to bother Manuel. He wasn’t reacting like someone exposed or caught in a scandal. He was still sitting on the couch with one leg crossed over the other as if the entire situation did not affect him in the slightest bit. Reporters pushed forward, “Mr. Rodriguez, is this a reconciliation meeting?!”“Were you secretly seeing Miss Sullivan again?”After Manuel’s coming out as Rodriguez Enterprises President and CEO, he became crazily known and a few people also looked into his life and were only able to find out that he was married to Penelope Sullivan for four years but no one really paid attention to it.Manuel had a coin that he was fiddling with in his hand and then for the first time since the reporters rushed in, Manuel said something or rather asked. “Did she arrange this?” Manuel still conti
Chapter 44
Penelope went home exhausted and avoided checking the internet like a plague. Her mother and brother tried to speak to her but she just went to her room and locked it behind her. She threw herself on her bed and turned on her phone, the phone screen glowing against her fingers. She saw several notifications of Lisa and her mum and she knew it was no doubt related to what was going on in the internet. She just sent a message to her assistant to get the PR team to handle whatever was going on.She clicked on the inbox of the unknown number that sent her a message like about an hour ago. Her thumb hovered over the file as she did not click on it immediately. Nothing about it made sense. The initials, M.R., she could not think of anyone that matches that description and timing except Manuel Rodriguez but he’s the type to do things brazenly. Why would he send the video using an unknown number but with initials that will let her know he’s the one??Her breath slowed slightly as she opened t
Chapter 45
Penelope froze as she watched her door being slowly tampered with. As the door burst open, Penelope had already cowered in fear only to hear her brother’s voice, “What’s up with you?”Her mother’s voice followed soon after, “Are you okay?” Her mother walked towards Penelope with Henry leaning on the door frame with his arms folded across his chest. Penelope slowly looked up and sighed heavily as she slowly came to her senses. Her phone’s screen had already gone off and so she just exhaustedly let her phone fall to the bed as her mother sat beside her and she hugged her mother. “I’m fine.”“I saw what happened and its obvious that b*stard knew about it, he could have at least said something,” Mary snarled. Penelope still didn’t say a word and just listened to her mother talk while leaning on her and then Henry said, “So what happened tonight was truly your doing?”Mary gave Henry a warning look to keep his mouth shut while Penelope just ignored him. This night was truly one h*ll of a n

“My firewall showed attempted penetration. It wasn’t noticeable but because I had Brandon get someone to strengthen my firewall with a detector, I noticed. And I was also able to find out someone else besides Penelope had a motive for our dinner that day and so I indulged her.”Even though Manuel had proven himself to be worthy of the positions as the President and CEO and was obviously doing well, there were still some people that did not want to accept it but no one had the audacity to voice out especially when he was revealed to be Sir Jeremy’s successor. Unfortunately, they’ve now chosen to resort to extreme measures. The next day, Penelope got to her office very early to avoid the stares and gazes of some people but as soon as she stepped into her office, she saw someone in a black suit with his back to her sitting on her own swivel chair facing the glass wall and looking down at pedestrians down below. She became on high alert and quickly pulled out her phone.“There would be no
Chapter 47
The evening rush at the Eastbay Diner was in full swing. Waitresses and waiters moved between tables carrying trays loaded with food and drinks. Laughter mixed with the clinking of glasses while a live band played softly from a small platform near the far corner of the restaurant area.Outside, luxury cars and ordinary sedans filled the parking lot alike. Inside, nobody cared. Eastbay Diner had earned its reputation years ago and it wasn’t just because it was a famous place to dine and wine but also because it didn’t just offer menus to the rich. Rich and average classed, everyone came for the food and also for the owner. Whoever could get on Brandon Walker’s good side and possibly strike a deal with him would be said to have supposedly hit the jackpot. The glass doors opened and a cool breeze swept inside as Manuel Rodriguez stepped into the diner wearing a black coat over a dark shirt. He looked so casual and Gavin followed a few steps behind. Several customers glanced up from whate

Three days later, the trap was ready and Brandon personally delivered it. The employees of Rodriguez Enterprises were in awe and fear of Brandon as they watched him head straight in the direction of Manuel’s office. “Brandon looks so cool,” a female employee said in a slightly hushed tone to her friend and her friend replied, “Of course, he would be. Seems like Brandon is close with our boss, this isn’t the first time he’s come here and when he does he always heads in the boss’ office direction.”On hearing that, the female employee squealed, trying to keep her voice under wraps, “Then I should hit the salon and spa more often if Brandon Walker is going to keep showing up here. Who knows, one day he might notice me.”Nudging the female employee, her friend said, “You better snap out of your delusions. We’ve got work to finish, as if someone like him would ever notice insignificant beings like us.”Hours passed as they tested every feature, every folder, every document, every hidden p
Chapter 49
Past midnight, Rodriguez Enterprises remained unusually quiet. Most of the employees had gone home hours ago and only cleaning staff moved through the deserted corridors.Inside the President’s office, the glow of his computer screen illuminated Manuel’s face and stacks of files lay open across the desk, board attendance records, archived reports, meeting transcripts and old investment summaries. Manuel had the habit of maintaining order but for him to be that messy, it was strange.Gavin sat on the couch adjacent to Manuel and couldn’t help but watch his boss sift through old documents that had been long forgotten. “You’ve been looking through documents from four years ago the entire day. Sir please, you need to rest.”Manuel didn’t answer immediately as his eyes still remained on the screen going through the Project 608, the merger proposal, board discussions and attendance sheet and the same names appeared repeatedly. Gavin stood up and walked closer to Manuel, “What exactly are yo
Chapter 50
Four years ago…Alistair burst into the hospital room, flowers in one hand and documents in the other. “We’ve going to be okay.”His wife looked up at him and said weakly, “You sound confident.” He laughed shakily, “The merger goes through next week. We’ll have enough and you’ll receive treatment. We’ll travel after this, you’ve always wanted to see Italy, remember?”She frowned slightly and asked, “The merger you told me you were still drafting? But it’s not finished yet.”Alistair was ambitious and didn’t just want to be a board member or a chairman in Rodriguez Enterprises, he also wanted to become a reliable business partner to them. He was working on the merger before his wife fell ill and then he had to abandon it and if the deal fell through, he believed to receive a lot of profit from it. Though it was not yet completed, he was going to mask it up and send it directly to the CEO, who was also known as the shadow broker even though he had never seen him in person despite his po
