Chapter 11
He put the paper away and went inside. Closed the balcony door. Lock clicked. The apartment was quiet. Ren's door shut. Yuki's door shut.He went to his room and lay down on the bed. His room was so cozy. The ceiling was white. One crack in the corner. The room was dark.He closed his eyes.Ren's face was first. The way his voice went when he said I couldn't do anything. The way his hand shook when he passed that paper over. Then his mum. The tube. The machines. Then the Kurodas. Always the Kurodas. Taking from whoever was in front of them and not thinking twice. Hiroshi. Ren. Akira. His mum. Everyone they ever looked at.He opened his eyes and sat up.Took out his phone. He looked at Mika's message one more time."Meet me tonight. 11pm. Basement of the old Miyako Hotel in Shibuya. Come alone. Tell no one."Nearly ten now.He got up. He put his shoes on and walked out. He opened the front door, stepped out, and pulled it shut behind him.Pressed the elevator button. He waited for it
Chapter 12
"I like your guts. Well, I know their whole system. The backdoors. The shell companies. The names of every judge and official they've ever paid off." She paused."Why haven't you done it yourself?"" I'm one person and I'm exhausted," she said. No performance in it. Just the plain truth. "I've been in this room for eight months living on instant noodles talking to machines. I need someone who can actually move around out there."Hiroshi looked at her for a moment. "You said you've been watching me since the trial. How much do you actually know?""Enough. You cleared three million credits in under a week on a student record. You walked into a hospital this morning and paid six months upfront without hesitating." She tilted her head. "And something happened to you that you can't tell anyone about."He said nothing."I'm not asking what it is," she said. "I don't care how you got the money. I care what you plan to do with it.""Same thing you want," he said. "Pull them apart."She watche

She pulled up a photo. Akira with a big smile on his face, holding up a fish he'd caught. One of those pictures people take on a good day when nothing is wrong yet.Hiroshi looked at it without saying anything."How do we get him out of there?"Mika shook her head. "We don't. Not yet. You go in there right now and you're not walking back out.""So what then?""We wait. We keep building the picture. We find the weak point. There's always one somewhere if you're patient enough to look."She opened up more files."I'll keep digging from this end. You keep doing whatever it is you're doing that keeps bringing in all that money." She glanced at him sideways. "You still haven't said where it's coming from."Hiroshi stayed quiet.Mika lifted one shoulder. "Alright. Not my business. I just need to know it's real and it keeps coming."She turned back to her screens."I'll get in touch when I have something worth showing you. Don't come here unless I reach out first. And don't breathe a word ab
Chapter 14
Rain was hitting the windows hard. Hana had been standing outside her father's office long enough to hear him finish a phone call. Her stomach was already tight. She knocked anyway."Come in."She pushed it open. Her father sat behind it with his hands folded on top.He didn't look up."Close the door."She closed it. The latch clicked and it felt louder than it should have."Come here."She walked over and stopped in front of the desk. Her hands wanted to find each other. She kept them at her sides. He still didn't look at her. Just at the paper in front of him."The boy paid his debt," Kazuo said. That little “bastard boyfriend of yours. Three million credits. Less than a week."He looked up. Gray eyes. Nothing warm anywhere behind them."Where did he get that money?"Something moved in her chest when he said it like that. The boy. Like Hiroshi was nothing."I don't know," she said.He looked at her the way he always did when he thought she was lying. His eyes went to her face. Sh

Chapter 15The sun was barely out. Hiroshi sat at the kitchen table with his laptop open. The screen was the only light in the room.Ren's door was closed. Yuki's door was also closed. They were still asleep.Mika's face appeared on the screen. Pale. Dark circles. Her hair was a mess."You look terrible," Hiroshi said."Good morning to you too," Mika said. Her voice was scratchy. "I have been up for two days.""I did not say pretty. I said "terrible."Mika's mouth twitched."You are a real charmer," she said."Hahaha. I try."She snorted and pulled up a blueprint. It was a big building with warehouse style. Docks on one side and a fence around it."This is Kuroda Logistics," she said. "Main hub. Tokyo docks."Hiroshi leaned closer."How big?" he said."Big enough. They move shipments every night. Containers from China, Korea, the Philippines. Most are not legal.""Who runs it?""A man named Watanabe. Captain Watanabe." Mika pulled up a photo. He was a fat man with a gray beard and sma

For the whole day, the blueprints stayed on the wall of Hiroshi's bedroom. He put them up across from his bed. When he woke up the next morning, they were the first thing he saw. He stood in front of them for hours tracing the hallways with his finger. Counting the cameras. Memorizing the guard rotations until he could close his eyes and walk through the whole building.Mika's voice came through the laptop on his desk that evening. Her camera was off. It was just her voice. Scratchy. Tired."Show me the path again," she said.Hiroshi pointed at the roof. "Skylight here. Drop to the catwalk. East hallway to the server room.""How many steps?""Forty seven.""Cameras?""Six. Two at the start. One at the corner. Two in the middle. One at the door.""Rotations?"Hiroshi closed his eyes. "The first gives fifteen seconds. Second gives twenty. The corner gives ten. The two in the middle give thirty together. Last gives twelve.""Guards?""Twelve on night shift. Two on the ground floor. He had his back against the north wall of the warehouse. The metal was cold through his jacket. He looked up. The drainage pipe was exactly where the blueprint said it would be. Rusted and old but it looked like it would hold.Mika's voice came through the earpiece. Barely a whisper."Fog's good," she said. "Moves with you. It covers your shape perfectly.""I can taste it," Hiroshi said."Good for you. But you have no time for that now, stop tasting and start climbing."“You right.” He smirked. He grabbed the drainage pipe with both hands. The metal was rough under his fingers. Its lakes of rust started to come off on his palms. He pulled himself up. His feet were finding the brackets. Arms doing the work. Three weeks ago he couldn't have done something like this. Three weeks ago his arms would have given up before he got anywhere near the roof. Now they just moved with no form of fatigue. He climbed fast. Hand over hand. The fog swirled around him.He reached the roof and pulled himse

“What? I can do this. You really don't know what I am capable of.”Mika's voice came through the earpiece. Flat and tired."The code changes every hour," she said. His jaw tightened. "I won't be needing that info. I can see it was tightly screwed. I'm gonna unscrew and get back to you."He pressed his palm flat against the door. Cold metal. Solid. He wasn't breaking through it. Not quietly anyway, not fast enough. He looked back down the hallway. The stairwell door was still closed. The guard is still on the floor. But that wouldn't last. "The guards downstairs are going to come check on the one I knocked out."Mika went quiet for a second. Then he heard her breathe out through her nose. Long and slow. “You only have your hands with you. How on earth are you going to break it?“With my hands.”“What are you? Superman?’“Yep. Maybe more. Sometimes, I forget what I really am.”"Then stop talking to me and start working," she said. "Look at the keypad. Is there a panel next to it?"He lo

Hiroshi moved before the guard could say jack. Two steps was all he took. He used his hand to cover the guard's mouth. The guards lips were soft under his palm. Breath warm and wet coming out through his nose. He tried to shout but the sound didn't get past Hiroshi's hand.Hiroshi's other hand found the side of the guard's neck. The exact spot Mika had shown him. He pushed his thumb in hard. The guard's eyes rolled up and backwards. His whole body went loose. Knees buckled. Hiroshi caught him on the way down and lowered him to the floor slowly. The guard's head touched the carpet without making a sound.Hiroshi stood up and straightened up. His heart was going hard. He looked at the drive still in the server. The green light was still blinking. A notification came from the system.LitRPG: [Data Transfer: 87%...]Then the radio on the guard's belt crackled."Zen? Are you there? Report."Hiroshi went still. He looked down at the man on the floor. Out cold. Nobody was answering that."Z

Hiroshi had both hands on the wheel, knuckles still white. The truck noise was louder than he wanted, but he kept his foot down anyway.Mika spoke again through the earpiece."Next left. Two blocks down. Alley behind the old noodle shop. You shouldn't come down here to the basement. I don't want to be discovered. Do you copy?”“Sure.”He turned left. The tires screamed on the wet road. The truck pulled sideways. He got it back on track."Two blocks," he said."Two blocks."He counted. One. Two. He swung right into the alley. The truck barely fit in. Both sides of the truck scraped the walls the whole way in. The metal was dragging on the brick. He didn't stop."The basement entrance is behind the dumpster. Green door."He parked and cut the engine. The quiet landed all at once. His mind felt like he could still hear the noise and all. But it's all quiet now. He just sat there for a bit with his hands still on the wheel. He finally relaxed his face and shoulders. Then, he took a deep b
