121: The Volunteers
Ren could not believe his eyes. In the doorway stood Sato Mane and Akira, the Ninjas who had almost lost their lives fighting beside him. Looking healthy and energetic under the bright lights, despite being a little frail.Overwhelmed for a split second, Ren hurried across the back towards them before he could stop to think about how that would come across to everyone who was watching. He didn't care at the moment. He was just happy to see them again...in one piece. If only he could get to see the other people dear to him, whom he's been worried sick about.Sato and Akira straightened to honor their Headmaster as he approached. He quickly grabbed their necks and pulled them close to his face in an affectionate embrace. A hush fell on the audience as they witnessed the display of affection. The council watched on with silent approval, some with green hearts Ren held them that way for a silent moment, each man occupied with his own emotions and confusion. “I tried to come visit. But
122: Fight For The Headmaster
As soon as the announcement was made, orders were given to the volunteers to make their way to the arena. They were paired into three groups of two Ninjas each, and the air was thick with tension because each pairing was as challenging and terrifying as they could come.Sato faced off against Ryota. Kurosaki against Thanos. Akira against Leo. It was skill versus expertise. Physical strength versus concentrated spiritual energy. Speed and precision against bulk. The elders murmured amongst themselves as they decided which pair would go first. Ren watched from the shadows, jaw tight with apprehension, stomach tight with discomfort.Masaki Kai stepped forward with the rule of the fight. “This fight is to determine who is best fit for the role of the Headmaster’s aide. So, you'll be relying on both your wits and strengths. Whoever draws the first blood wins and moves on to the next round.” Students had gathered in the stands and had already begun to pick their favorites, who they int
123: The 100-Dollar Gamble
No one believed it until Thanos lifted his arm and—DRIP. DRIP. Blood trickled from a cut under his arm, to the floor of the arena. A mischievous grin crossed Kurosaki's expression. “See? I drew the first blood.”Even Ren could not believe his eyes and ears. No one saw Kurosaki make the cut. No one saw him swing the blade. No one even saw the blade. So how did he do it?“B-But how?!” Thanos cried. “You didn't even see me come towards you!” “Oh, but I did.” Kurosaki wiped his bloodied nose and swiped the same fingers through his hair. He looked formidable for a shocking moment, almost like a different person. Not the reserved Ninja on Ren’s team. A terrifying one. His twin couldn't be more proud of him as she cheered him on. “That's right! My twin’s sleek as fuck!” “No cursing in the assembly!” Elder Kenji yelled, seeming agitated. Then he turned his attention to Kurosaki. “Can you explain to us how you nicked your opponent without a blade? Without getting seen? And you must know
124: The Gamble's Outcome
Akira bet 100 dollars on Ryota winning the match. Kurosaki bet 100 dollars on Sato. 200 dollars was on the line for whoever won the gamble. A series of attacks and defense ensued in the arena. Both Ninjas were terrific in the skillset they displayed. Ryota was cunning and quick to throw punches. Sato was fast on his feet and used his advantage to his body. Every time Ryota threw a fast one, Sato coiled his body like a spring and caught it with his fist. Then he quickly threw one of his own. And Ryota caught it, flinging him off his feet and throwing him behind his back. Every single time, Sato landed on his feet. Their brawl fell into a familiar rhythm that even the students who watched in the audience mimicked the fights and predicted the next move. On and on it went. Including their banter. “Heh! What is this?” Ryota mocked. “Too scared to take a hit?” Sato scoffed, then jumped back on his hands and lunched his feet in the air three sixty degrees. Ryota mis
125: Three Trials
After a brief deliberation within the council, which Ren had been obligated to be a part of, he stalked off feeling quite uncomfortable about the unexpected turns and progression the contest was taking. Elder Kenji took the stage and a hush fell on the audience. “A series of three trials await you.”His voice rang strong and steady as he addressed the Ninjas on stage. The audience listened with rapt attention as they waited for the next contest that would determine who would become the new aide of the Headmaster.“The physical combat was only to determine your physical strength and coordination with your spiritual energy required to beat your opponents.” The elder snapped his fingers and one of the guards hurried over, presenting him with a scroll. “The selection of the Headmaster's aide has been a carefully drafted process which involves physical combat, investigation trial, test of trust and crisis management.” He paused, sweeping his gaze around the faces of the contesting Ninja
126: Who's The Glutton?
Ren stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of his office, looking past the glass and watching the mountains that rose into the skies in the distance. Noisy chatter rent the air behind him, as the Ninjas got into a banter about who's actually going to win the position. Ren was tired of listening to it all, and he wished to hide under a blanket and drown the voices out. After a while, the door swung open and a hush fell in the air. Elder Kenji and Masaki Kai trickled into the room behind two guard Ninjas. “Stand at ease, please.” Elder Kenji waved them to the middle of the room, his eyes finding Ren’s back. “Headmaster, please. This will only take a moment.”Ren’s shoulders rose and fell in a grave of exhaustion, and he turned to face the unwanted company in his office. “So, what are these clues?” he asked, jamming his hands in his pockets and striding towards them. He could feel Masaki's hot gaze on his face the entire time, but chose to blatantly ignore it. Elder Kenji snapped his
127: Good Riddance!
Ren swallowed a lump down his throat as he met the sight in the backyard, right after Kai did. Kai scrunched his nose up and shook his head in disbelief. “You didn't tell me you were bringing me to a butcher house.” He looked up and met Ren’s fierce gaze. “Are you trying to kill me?” Before Ren could respond, Hiro Carter looked up. “Finally, Ren! Come here!” He was covered in white overalls and gloved up. There were large goggles over his eyes, a helmet on his head, and an electric saw in his strong grip. He appeared to be protecting himself against some kind of virus.Ren wondered why the old man had to choose white of all things, to execute a butcher-dead-body plan, seeing as the blood of the mess he was making stuck to his overalls like small and large geographical maps. Was he perhaps…losing his sanity? It was a heartbreaking, devastating thing to lose an only child. Maybe it wasn't just Mizuki who took Yoshi's passing hard. His uncle was not able to bear it too, no matter how
128: Extraordinary Kaito
Ren and Kaito were just ten minutes into closing the grave when they heard a creak in the tress behind them. Actually, it was Kaito who heard it first. It happened that he had a heightened auditory sense, far more sensitive than Ren’s. Ren was too busy digging hard and fast, tossing the sand over the body and it's parts, when Kaito tapped him and signaled for them to be quiet. Ren frowned, sweat dripping in rivulets from his face. “Do you not want to leave here?” Kaito rolled his eyes, getting exasperated by now. “Of course I do want to get out of this godforsaken place. I've been running all my life, from places like this especially. Why would I want back in?” “So what is the problem? Why are you stopping me from digging?” “I don't want to stop you from digging, but you have to listen. Did you hear that?” Ren’a frowned deepened, tetgering near irritation. “Hear what?” “I thought I heard a creak.” Kaito shook his head and rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “I guess I mist
129: Nine-tailed Fox
“Oh come on, Ren!” Kaito laughed. “Don’t look like you haven’t seen a dead cougar.” “Well that’s hardly the point here, Kai!” Ren yelled. “How can we explain the sudden death of a wild animal that had me snagged between its teeth just moments ago? How can we explain what just happened?” “You got saved, that’s what happened. You can at least act grateful. You don't have to explain shit to anyone.” “Who am I grateful to?” “Me.” “And what did you do?” Ren watched Kaito carefully until the red-head heaved a deep sigh and collapsed into the ground, against a tree bark. “Alright, fine. I killed the cougar. I saved you from getting ripped and being presented as dinner to some family of wild cats.” Ren blinked in shock, his eyes running down Kaito’s bloody form. “B-but how? Cougars are…they are…” “Fucking dangerous predators, yes. But so are foxes. Especially nine-tailed ones. Except the foxes have got the upper hand in the tricky department and—” “Just hold on, Kai. What are you s
130: Tricks To Finding A Thief
When the shadow remained at the foot of the door a few moments too long without moving, a couple ideas started to run through Hana’s mind. Out of all of them, the one that made her nerves jumpy the most, was the idea that it could be any of her family members outside that door. And maybe…they had finally come to shut her up for good. She gripped the handle of the mug tighter as agitation and trepidation washed through her. Then with trembling fingers, she reached for the handle and pulled. She reacted before she even saw who it was by the door. Screaming, she lifted the mug and aimed for an attack. “What the hell do you want?!” “Hana?” Ren’s voice came out coated in surprise a second before he reacted fast, catching the mug in Hana’s grip before it landed flat against his face. “Hana, stop! It’s me!” But she was still hysterical even as he pried the mug from her fingers, arms flailing about, eyes squeezed shut. “No! Get away from me!” Ren managed to catch both arms and pin h
