CHAPTER SEVENTY-ONE
The system wasn’t answering fast enough. Theon shut his eyes and began to take deep breaths, trying to control himself. This shouldn't be happening. His ribs felt like a cage being crushed. “Oops, host, you might have eaten three instead of two Jiutan hearts.” Theon’s face turned even paler. Blood drained from his lips. “What in heaven’s name? Three? How come I didn’t see or notice it?” “The third bit was smaller than the rest and more concentrated, I presume.” The system chipped in, tone far too casual. “Your core was already filled with energy converted from beast cores and herbs. Adding those two abnormalities made your core a little problematic. Three made it a riot.” “Damn it!” Theon’s teeth clamped down on his lip until he tasted iron. Sweat dripped steadily down his head, tracing his jaw, soaking his collar. “System, why are you so useless? What’s the use of having you as a team when you can’t foresee even the smallest things? You’re…” Theon would have cursed more and b
CHAPTER SEVENTY-TWO
Other students noticed the funny way Theon carried himself as he rushed out of Amethyst court's dining hall. The rush was not the hurried stride of someone chasing a class but the brittle, off-balance gait of someone who had just realized the air itself might be trying to kill him. Then someone noticed the chef's smug smile. The smile was too satisfied to be innocent, too deliberate to be ignored. Her eyes narrowed with suspicion. “She couldn't have poisoned him now, could she?” “Poison?” Her neighbor inhaled sharply, eyes as round as saucers, light flickered in her pupils, and her face turned pale, like a person suddenly remembering how easy it was to die at a table. She quickly sniffed her own bowl, trying to find any trace of something suspicious, because once the word was spoken, every bowl turned suspect. “Stop looking. She wouldn't harm us. Lots of people hate Theon. She would like to hurt him, not us,” The first girl continued to eat casually, as if she'd not scattered the
CHAPTER SEVENTY-THREE
The moment Theon came outside, the rumbling in his stomach got worse, and the worse was not subtle, it was the kind of worse that felt like a storm had been sealed under his ribs. There was a sharp pain at the lower left side of his belly, under his belly and along his back, and the pain was specific and insistent, like something was trying to carve a path out. The rumbling got worse, and the sound of it was almost louder than his thoughts. He looked around quickly, and the look was desperate and guilty. There was no one in sight, and the absence of witnesses felt like a mercy he did not trust. He raised his leg slightly, and a loud fart exploded in the atmosphere. The explosion was catastrophic in a way that felt personal and hilarious. The smell startled him so much he nearly fell flat on his face, because even he was not prepared for the violence of his own body. The smell. Good heavens, the smell. He had never encountered anything as foul smelling as this. Not even at the acad
CHAPTER SEVENTY-FOUR
The sound terrified him. Why was his core making such a sound? It couldn't be what he thought... right? He temporarily discarded his thought of rushing to the toilet bowl and instead hurriedly sat down on the cold bathroom floor, his heart pounding a mile a minute as unease crawled beneath his skin. The rhythmic thudding inside his chest grew louder with every passing second, each beat feeding the dreadful possibility he desperately wished wasn't true.Closing his eyes, he inhaled slowly through his nose, forcing the ragged rhythm of his breathing into something steadier before directing his gaze inward. His consciousness soon arrived at his aegis core, and the sight that greeted him caused his blood to run cold. The once-pristine core now carried a faint reddish hue, as though it had been scraped raw or bruised from repeated impacts. Tiny ripples trembled across its surface, each one looking painfully unstable. His heart skipped multiple beats, his mind racing a mile a minute. He car
CHAPTER SEVENTY-FIVE
Theon hit two acupoints, forcing the dark energy to grind to a halt, ending its ascent pathway, and the halt was sudden and violent. ‘You're quite fast. Trying to take over my body huh? You're delusional,” his words were scorn wrapped in certainty. Theon had a bold suspicion, and the suspicion settled like a blade. One of the captured Jiutan monsters whose heart was used in preparation of the soup had gone demonic, and the demonic nature explained everything. Some demonized beasts when caught in shocking situations hibernate themselves, and wait patiently for a convenient time to reawaken. The patience was predatory in its nature. Probably, the expert who caught it killed it too suddenly, forcing it to seal its complete essence in its heart, in a desperate move for survival. Consequently, it remained hidden in the heart, waiting for its next victim to fall into his carefully woven trap. The so-called master chef who was invited to prepare the meal and conserve the energy probably
CHAPTER SEVENTY-SIX
3.16 p.m. The following day.Droplets of sweat covered Theon's body, and the sweat was thick and stale. There were hints of blood by the corner of his mouth, and his torso, as if a wicked taskmaster had used whips to serrate his body, and the image was not far from the truth. His face was no longer creased in pain, he was inhaling and exhaling normally, and the normalcy was hard-won. The only indications of his previous suffering was his still pale lips, the tiny marks of dried blood on his skin, the raised welts on his body, and the torn shirt beside him. That shirt of his was looking like it had been through a storm. His stomach was no longer distended, and the relief of that was visible. Around him, visible wisps of energy could be seen circulating, and the wisps were calm now. In his meridians, a powerful wave of energy kept pushing forward, trying to break a bottleneck, and the push was insistent. Theon kept forcing it back, chanting ‘compress, compress’ in his mind, trying to
CHAPTER SEVENTY-SEVEN
Theon's face darkened on hearing the system's words, visibly displeased. He didn't bother to hide his annoyance. “System, you must have gone crazy. Don't annoy me more than you already have. I'm not paying any penalty,” his refusal was absolute, making it obvious he didn't intend to take a step back. He dispelled the exclusion formation and returned the formation disc back to the storage space, the motion slow and deliberate. Once that was done, he brought out a bucket and some cleaning agents, promptly ignoring the system. Once the water began to foam he began to wash the bathroom clean, and the scrubbing was furious. The night before, he had spilled blood and phlegm due to the ensuing backlash, and the mess was evidence. He needed to clean it off before he could feel comfortable to do anything else. It was a necessity required to feel normal. “If you don't undergo the punishment, you will pay in other ways,” The system chipped, and each word a threat wrapped in the velvet of so
CHAPTER SEVENTY-EIGHT
After Theon took a warm, long comforting bath, he dried his hair with air magic, and the drying was indulgent. Wore a bathrobe and made his way to the room, his steps unhurried and leisurely. He picked up the bag of food he'd carelessly tossed aside the previous day, a reminder of the chaos that went down here. Thankfully, the room was secure, a little mercy in the midst of yesterday's suffering. Otherwise, pests like ants, rats and roaches would have had a field day on his food, and the thought was revolting. He would have had to throw them away. The bread had gone cold, and some of the jam spilled, probably when he carelessly tossed it aside during his yesterday’s rush to the bathroom. He wiped it clean with a rag and set them out on a table, his movement were absentminded and filled with ease. Carefully, he chose food low in spirit energy, choosing to exercise caution and stay within the net of safety. His choice was mainly junk without spirit energy, that was what he considere
CHAPTER SEVENTY-NINE
Theon moved like a phantom between the trees, using the footwork from his storm dragon twelve moves to stay as silent as a shadow, each move perfected from hours of practice. His eyes were sharp, ears even sharper, and the sharpness was survival. Knowing the kind of eccentric system that was bound to him, and how it seemed to enjoy sending him on emergency missions, he figured he needed to put a few things in place to avoid being taken by surprise, and the planning was a necessity. According to the calibration rules of the system, the missions get harder the higher you go, and the rule was cruel. The system might wake up crazy one day and decide to send him on missions outside the academy, and when that day comes, he doesn't want to run around like a headless chicken. The image was unacceptable. He had actually been thinking about it for a while before the system brought it up. Normally, he was the kind of person who had foresight and saw most problems coming before they even made
CHAPTER EIGHTY
Theon stopped cold in his tracks, his brows knitting together in confusion as every instinct urged him to freeze. What the hell was going on? Wasn't this route supposed to be old, abandoned, and no longer in use? From everything the system had told him, this hidden passage should have been forgotten by history itself, left to decay beneath the academy for centuries without another soul remembering it existed. The paths inside were overgrown with weeds, their roots forcing themselves through cracks in the ancient stone as though trying to reclaim the tunnel for nature. Dust lay thick over the uneven ground, cobwebs hung lazily from the ceiling, and the stale scent of age lingered heavily in the air. Judging by the state of the place, no one should have walked through here in years. So how come there were people already using his potential secret exit before him? The contradiction immediately put him on guard. If there were other people familiar with this route, then using it in the fut
