31. The Illusion of Security
Chapter 31: The Illusion of SecurityDarkness swallowed the living room whole. Audrey held her breath, her chest pounding.A heavy mechanical grinding echoed throughout the house. Titanium steel plates descended from the ceiling. The three-inch-thick steel automatically covered all the glass windows and the main door. The safe house locked itself down, becoming a sealed bunker.A few seconds later, the emergency lights flickered on. A dim red glow illuminated the room."Sit on the sofa," Kai commanded in a flat tone. "It will take them about fifteen minutes to breach those titanium plates from the outside."Audrey felt her way through the gloom and collapsed onto the sofa. Her body shook violently. The adrenaline that had been racing through her heart was now plummeting. The cold air from the house's central air conditioning pierced her skin. She hugged herself tight.Kai walked toward the kitchen counter. His footsteps made no sound. He unzipped a tactical supply bag on the counter.
32. Terror Behind the Rain
The fierce rainstorm roared loudly outside the luxurious safehouse, entirely masking the sharp screech of tires as a fleet of black vans suddenly braked hard in the front courtyard. Inside the dimly lit living room, Kai's enhanced hearing caught a distinct anomaly. A thick, concentrated murderous aura seeped straight through the ventilation gaps."Miss Audrey, we have some uninvited guests," Kai stated flatly.Without waiting for her response, Kai moved instantly toward the electrical panel. He violently threw the main switch down. Every single light in the house completely died in a matter of seconds. Absolute, pitch-black darkness instantly swallowed the entire room."Kai? What is going on?!" Audrey shrieked, her voice muffled. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs."The Syndicate," Kai answered quickly in a completely emotionless tone. "Get down to the basement right now. Lock yourself inside the Panic Room from the inside.""But you—""I will take care of this trash. Do not co
33. The Executioner's Dance
"Let go of me!" Audrey screamed, her voice trembling violently. Tears of pure desperation streamed heavily down her pale cheeks. "I can easily pay you double whatever she is paying! Just name your price!""I absolutely do not need your pathetic pocket change!" Zack laughed harshly. The cruel, booming laugh echoed terrifyingly inside the steel-walled panic room. He aggressively pressed his jagged blade a single millimeter deeper, nearly breaking the fragile epidermis of Audrey's throat. "Isabella already paid me entirely in solid gold bars. You have to die tonight.""You are all absolute monsters!" Audrey sobbed in utter despair. She squeezed her eyes tightly shut, entirely bracing herself for the agonizing pain of the cold blade slicing her throat wide open."Shut your damn mouth, you stupid bitch."The tactically masked man raised his hunting knife high into the air. The thick muscles in his arm tensed completely. He fully prepared to viciously slit the throat of the sole heir to Ari
34. Dangerous Proximity
Audrey carefully brought her medical kit over to the living room coffee table. The entire room was illuminated only by the eerie, dull red glow of the emergency lights. The atmosphere outside was still completely dominated by the deafening sound of the raging rainstorm."Take your shirt off," Audrey ordered softly.Kai did not argue in the slightest. He sat down heavily on the plush sofa, his posture incredibly rigid and perfectly straight. He slowly unbuttoned his soaked black dress shirt one button at a time. He peeled the wet, sticky fabric down, completely exposing his broad shoulder and left arm. The deep, jagged gash from the hunting knife was gaping wide open, dripping thick, dark blood steadily onto his skin.Audrey sat down directly beside Kai. The physical distance between them became incredibly, dangerously close. The tip of the girl's index finger accidentally brushed entirely against the bare skin of Kai's shoulder as she leaned in to closely inspect the deep tear.Audrey
35. Manipulating the Pawn
Shards of the shattered vase scattered across the table. A few fragments flew far enough to hit the tips of Audrey's shoes."What was that?!" Audrey yelled in a panic. She pressed her back against the concrete wall. "Why did that vase just explode on its own?!"Kai took a deep breath. He forced the hellish energy back into the seal on his wrist. He had to control his temper. He could not afford to blow his cover now.His blue eyes slowly dimmed back to normal. His face returned to being as cold as a block of ice."An extreme change in air pressure," Kai answered flatly.Audrey stared at Kai with ragged breaths. "Air pressure?""The thermite explosion at the front door compromised the house's vacuum insulation system," Kai lied, his tone perfectly logical. "The freezing temperature from the storm outside clashed with the indoor heating. Cheap glass cannot withstand such a sudden change in temperature."Audrey swallowed hard. The physics logic sounded plausible in her head. She clutched
36. Storm of Execution
Flames roared ferociously as they devoured the ruins of the living room. The deafening blast of the rocket still left a sharp, high-pitched ringing in the ears.Kai lifted the massive slab of concrete that had collapsed onto his back. He tossed the heavy block aside with effortless grace. His clothes were shredded. Small embers smoldered on his shirt. Yet Kai did not feel the slightest bit of heat. His skin was completely impervious and numb.He looked down at Audrey shielded beneath his body."Get up, Miss Vance," Kai ordered in a flat tone.Audrey coughed violently from inhaling the explosive dust. Her face was covered in gray soot. She clutched her wool bag tightly. Her hands trembled as she struggled to sit up on the cracked kitchen floor."My ears are ringing," Audrey groaned in a hoarse voice. "What just happened?!""Isabella just used a military rocket launcher," Kai answered with absolute calm. He stood up and brushed the remaining dust off his shoulder. "The scale of this att
37. A Silent Slaughter
Hundreds of brass bullet casings clattered against the concrete floor. Thick gunpowder smoke billowed, filling the ruined living room. The pungent stench of sulfur stung the nose.Rex ceased his fire. The barrel of his heavy machine gun smoked with searing heat."Die, you bastard!" Rex laughed savagely. "Do you think you are Superman, catching my bullets?!"The gunpowder smoke slowly thinned, blown away by the night wind. Rex's arrogant laughter stopped instantly. His eyes widened so far they threatened to bulge out of their sockets. In the center of the room, Kai stood with perfect posture. His black shirt fluttered slightly in the wind. There was not a single bullet hole in his body. Not a single drop of blood had been spilled.A shield of pitch-black shadows floated in the air right in front of him. The hundreds of steel bullets fired just moments ago were completely halted. The lethal projectiles froze in mid-air. The steel slowly melted into pools of scorching liquid lead and dri
38. The Suffocating Truth
Kai's voice sounded incredibly calm. The call echoed down through the dark opening of the floor safe.Audrey froze down below. Her heart pounded wildly in her chest. She gripped her silver pistol with both hands, her palms slick with sweat. She was panting heavily.Audrey slowly stood up. She climbed the small metal ladder inside the safe. Her head peeked out from the concrete opening. The sight unfolding in the living room shattered her sanity. The room was terrifyingly silent. There were no mercenary corpses. There were no pools of blood. Not a single bullet casing remained. Everything was flawlessly clean, as if a shootout had never occurred. Yet the concrete walls, riddled with bullet holes, stood as absolute proof. The battle had been incredibly real.Audrey climbed out of the hatch. Her entire body trembled violently. She immediately raised her pistol. She aimed the muzzle of the weapon straight at Kai."Do not move!" Audrey screamed, her voice cracking. Tears streamed down her
39. The Concluded Mission
The rocket explosion blew the front of the safe house to pieces. The massive blast was absolutely deafening.Kai pinned Audrey to the kitchen floor. His back bore the crushing weight of concrete rubble and heavy steel. Thick smoke mixed with gunpowder dust billowed to fill the entire room. Flames began to lick at the curtains and wooden furniture in the living room.Audrey coughed violently from inhaling the searing dust. A sharp ringing pierced her ears."Are you still alive?" Kai asked in a flat tone. His voice cut clearly through the roar of the flames."I am fine," Audrey groaned, panting heavily. "My ears hurt."Kai shoved the massive slab of concrete off his back with a single effortless motion. He stood up and brushed the lingering dust from his shirt. His skin remained completely unscathed by the blast. He offered his hand and pulled Audrey to her feet."Isabella is not playing games," Audrey said, her voice trembling. She stared at the living room, which had already transform
40. Target in the Golden Cage
The iron door opened with an incredibly harsh creak.Leo shoved Livia forward with tremendous force. The girl lost her balance. She fell hard onto the cold, damp concrete floor. Her white nightgown was soiled with dirt and dust."Walk faster, you piece of shit!" Leo barked in a hoarse voice. He stepped inside, following Livia into the room.Livia winced, suppressing the pain in her scraped knees. She looked back with tear-filled eyes. The room was pitch black and smelled musty. This was the underground bunker facility beneath the Aristhos Estate."It hurts, Leo," Livia whimpered softly. "Why was I brought to this dark place?""You talk too damn much, you stupid bitch!" Leo roared in annoyance. He ran a hand through his own rain-soaked hair. "Do you think I want to be in this rotting hole?! Aunt Isabella ordered me to lock you up in here, damn it!"Livia wrapped her arms around herself. She was absolutely terrified. "I want to go back to my room. Please let me go upstairs.""Your room
