Chapter 31: Start of the Apocalypse (2)
Cristian’s father was trapped between the jaws of a giant creature as his lion clawed furiously at its feet. The monster didn’t even seem to notice the lion’s presence as it bit down hard on his father. People were screaming, running to avoid being trampled or caught by other monsters. Then a lioness jumped into view, joining the lion in its efforts. His mother suddenly came into view shouting something over the screams.[Human?]He paid no mind to Fenrir as his eyes remained glued to the video, watching as the lioness was lifted into the air and tore into two. Blood and gore splattered everywhere as his mother was abruptly stomped under foot by another monster. The lion was kicked aside, flying into a nearby building. His father was abruptly snapped in two by the monster, and the two sides of his body fell with a sick sound. So this was how his family met their end. In his last life, he had always wondered how they were doing before eventually assuming they died when he couldn’t find
Chapter 32: Several Days Later
It was only after several days had passed that Cristian chose to leave the walls of the castle with Fenrir. In the last life, he had tried to hold out in the castle, but with only a bottle of water on hand, he had been forced to come out of hiding early on to find supplies and risked his life several times. In this life, he didn’t have the same concerns and could live out in the castle for many years without stepping out.The only reason he chose to actively leave the castle was because he was curious about what was happening outside after not hearing anything for a few days. With the power down, he couldn’t look on the internet for news, so he had to rely on what he saw firsthand.Cristian tightened his coat closer to his body to keep out the cold as he silently observed his surroundings. There was a brief lull in the weather, and snow was falling lightly.[Is it really necessary for you to leave the castle?]“I’m just going to survey the area and maybe grab more supplies. We shouldn
Chapter 33: A Familiar Face
Cristian’s eyes narrowed at the sight of a person’s figure trudging through the snow. He hadn’t expected to encounter anyone willing to brave through the dangers, especially on their own, and shifted to get a better look at them. As they grew closer, he tensed, ready to act at a moment’s notice. That’s when the wind blew off their hood, revealing their face.He couldn’t believe his eyes. It was Miranda. She was someone who had helped him out in the early days of the apocalypse before she was killed. He had never expected to see her in this life, not this soon.[Why are you acting so strangely? Is it someone you know?]Cristian glanced down and asked, “You don’t recognise her?”[Do you expect me to remember every human we’ve met?]When Fenrir put it like that, he could see that the wolf had a point. However, this was Miranda, the woman who helped them out when they were in trouble.“Don’t you remember the woman who gave us food in the last life?” Cristian asked, trying to jog the wolf’
Chapter 34: Catching Up With an Old Acquaintance
Miranda didn’t bat an eye when they entered the castle, though she had hesitated for a brief moment before taking a step inside. Cristian couldn’t say he was surprised and was even grateful she didn’t kick up a fuss.If she had, then things might have turned out differently. Even if he wanted to repay her for helping him in his previous life, it didn’t mean he would allow her to put his own life at risk.Cristian brought her to one of the rooms he had refurbished into a living space, though it wasn’t very fancy. It had the basics like a bed and table with two chairs, but it definitely stood out in a place like this, and her eyes widened at the sight. He didn’t say a word as he settled in one of the chairs. She studied the room and him for a couple moments before walking and sitting down in the chair opposite him.“Thank you,” she said in a small voice.“Don’t thank me. I’m doing this as a charity,” he said.“I understand. I’ll share a little of what I know,” she said with a nod.Howev
Chapter 35: Under Attack
Cristian blinked, thinking he might have misheard as Miranda continued, “It happened out of the blue. One moment we were minding our own business; the next we were being attacked. I ended up separated from everyone else and was wandering outside until I bumped into you.”So he hadn’t misheard her. She had really been attacked by someone or something instead of being betrayed by her group. He wasn’t sure which was worse for her.“Can you tell me about who or what attacked you?” he asked, leaning forward with interest.Learning more about whoever or whatever attacked her group could help him in the future if he ever encountered them. If it were a monster, he would probably have more knowledge than she did, but it would still be good to know what kind was in the vicinity. If it were other people, then he could keep an eye out for those people and know to avoid them. Her expression turned odd before she said, “I don’t know.”Confused by her answer, he asked, “What do you mean?”“I mean th
Chapter 36: Stalling
Cristian snapped his head up to Miranda, who was giving him an uncertain look. Fenrir hung limply in her hands, looking up at her with its big eyes.He should have been more careful and not reveal his unusual ability to talk with his beast. No one has ever been able to communicate with their beast, but current circumstances have forced his hand. With the invasion of monsters on the way, he couldn’t afford to be picky about when to speak with Fenrir.“There’s no time for explanations. We have to move fast before those monsters get here,” he said, turning his attention to the approaching monsters.Miranda looked like she wanted to argue, but she chose to drop the matter for the moment and asked, “Do you have a plan?”Honestly, he didn’t. They couldn’t fight. They couldn’t hide. They couldn’t run. There didn’t seem to be any solution to resolve the issue. However, he couldn’t just lie over and let himself be torn apart by those monsters. He got a second chance at life, and he wasn’t goin
Chapter 37: Retreat
Cristian stared down at the monsters with a grim expression as they smashed headfirst into the stone wall. Despite there being an open entrance they could rush through, they chose to claw at the section of the stone wall right at their feet.He couldn’t decide if it was because they were too stupid to realize that there was an easier way to get in or that they were too furious to care.“What do we do?” Miranda asked as she clung to the stone wall to keep herself from being knocked off her feet.Cristian glanced up at the empty sky before saying, “We’ll have to retreat.”“Retreat? To where?” she asked.“Further into the castle,” he said and threw one more grenade to distract them before grabbing Fenrir and running off.“Wait,” Miranda called after him, struggling with the heavy gun in her arms.Realizing her situation, he paused for a moment to send the gun back into the dimensional space and freed her hands. Then he continued running with Miranda limping after him.[It seemed that you
Chapter 38: Safety Concerns
“What’s happening? Are those the monsters you were talking about?” Miranda asked, staring at the ceiling anxiously like she feared it would collapse on them.It was a valid concern. Cristian had known things would get dangerous, but he didn’t expect the ceiling to crack just from the monster’s arrival. Would they even be safe after going into the dimensional space? The exit point and entrance point were the same. If something happened to the secret room while they were in the dimensional space, would they even be able to get out?“Are you sure we should stay here?” Miranda asked, tearing her gaze away from the ceiling to look at him for guidance.Cristian tore his gaze away from the ceiling and said, “We should be fine.”Even though she looked doubtful, she didn’t argue and just looked back up at the ceiling with wariness. Another roar sent shockwaves, making more pieces of the ceiling fall. Cristian grimaced as he considered taking them back up before going into the dimensional space
Chapter 39: Forming a Partnership
Miranda stared up at the ceiling and asked, “Is it safe to go outside?”“Let’s wait a little bit longer before stepping out,” Cristian said, taking a seat.“Alright,” Miranda said, petting Fenrir, who had a pleased look on its face.Cristian raised an eyebrow at Fenrir, but the wolf didn’t even notice, continuing to lie in Miranda’s lap. He pulled water and snacks from the dimensional space and offered some to her. She accepted them graciously and nibbled on the food. They sat in silence, not moving from their spots. After some time passed, Cristian got to his feet and said, “I think it’s safe to take a look now.”Miranda didn’t say a word. She simply stood up with Fenrir in her arms and followed him out of the secret room. When they exited the secret passage, they froze at the sight before them. There was a gaping hole in the wall, revealing the exterior. They could see the damaged castle walls ahead of them, allowing them a partial view of outside the town. They stared in silence be
Chapter 40: Déjà Vu
“Since you’re telling me this, you seem confident that I wouldn’t take offense or have some wicked schemes against you,” Cristian said.“I could say the same to you. Honestly, my partner’s abilities aren’t as amazing as yours, but they would be a great help to us,” Miranda said.“Oh, what kind of abilities does your wolf have?” he asked. She smiled and said, “Lupa can manipulate shadows.”That wasn’t surprising, as he already knew about that, but it was nice to confirm that nothing had changed. He was still flummoxed over the wolf’s name. However, what he heard next stunned him.“Truthfully, if I wanted to, I could have escaped those beasts with Lupa’s help. Hiding in the shadows is a helpful ability, and shadow travel makes getting to places less tedious,” she said.Cristian stared at her, processing this revelation. She and her partner never displayed this part of the wolf’s abilities in the previous life. In the last life, the wolf could manipulate shadows to trip up enemies, but t
