Chapter 21: The Live Feed
The sound from Anthonys tablet was low and sharp. It was not like the other sounds around us. The storm was loud. The fires were crackling.Anthony looked down at the screen. The blue light on his face changed. A yellow warning message started scrolling across his maps and files.INCOMING ENCRYPTED STREAM DETECTED. SOURCE: INTERNAL HANDLER BEACON 4412."What is this?" Anthony said. His thumb stopped moving on the detonator switch. He swiped at the screen. He was not calm anymore. "What did you do?""You said I should always have a plan " I said. I stepped into the ruined circle of the conservatory. "I'm a photographer. I always have a camera.. I always record what I see."I showed him my silver shackle.. I was not pointing at the steel cuff. I was pointing at my matte-black camera strap. The one still looped over my shoulder. Clipped to my belt. There was a small glass aperture on the strap. It was called The Third Eye.It was not a police tool. My father gave it to me before he disap
Chapter 22: The Clean Slate
The plastic detonator hit the concrete floor with a dull thud. It didn't bounce. It just sat there among the fern leaves and broken glass its red light blinking like a dying heartbeat. Anthony let his arms drop to his sides. The tense predatory energy that had kept him standing for the ten minutes seemed to drain out of him leaving behind a hollow shell of a man who had just realized his plan had fallen apart. "You think you won, Elara " he whispered, his eyes staring blankly at the flashing light on his tablet. The sirens at the gates were getting louder a chorus of wailing metal cutting through the thunder. "You think bringing in the inspectors fixes everything.. The Silent Partner isn't a company. It's a cleaner." I took a step forward my boots crunching a pane of glass into white powder. My hand. The one still wearing the jagged cuff. Reached out to grab Anthonys collar to pull him out of the ruins before the federal teams flooded the perimeter. I stopped when I saw his lips mo
Chapter 23: The Analog Ghost
The house didn’t just catch fire; it made a loud noise like it was screaming. The heat inside the entrance hall was like a living thing that hit me hard making it hard to breathe. Above us the high ceiling made of carved oak was like a grid of orange flames melted lacquer onto the fancy marble floor below. Smoke. Thick, black and smelling bad like burning insulation. Hung just four feet off the ground like a heavy velvet curtain.Mikhail and I ran low to the ground our bodies bent double as we burst into the burning part of the wing. We moved fast. It was a jerky frantic movement. The broken bits of the silver handcuffs on our wrists made a scraping noise against the wall as we lunged through a pair of double doors into the formal dining room slamming them shut behind us."The doors won't keep them out " Mikhail gasped, leaning against the mahogany wood. He was holding his arm, which was useless and his face was pale and sweaty with soot and seawater on it. "Those people... They ar
Chapter 24: The Negative Chamber
The lift did not go down slowly it went down fast. The moment I pulled the iron lever behind the sideboard in the dining room a loud noise was heard from under our feet. The old steel cable, which was already weak and broken from the heat coming from the floor broke with a scream. The floor opened up.The square part of the floor which was a lift for hiding liquor during the Prohibition era went down like a stone into the dark basement. I quickly put my arm around Elaras waist as the air rushed past us. The broken parts of our silver handcuffs made a lot of noise hitting the wood as we fell down into the basement. We hit the ground hard. The lift broke into pieces when it hit the concrete floor of the basement. I lost my breath. For a moment everything was dark and painful. My left arm, which was already hurt and numb hurt more as I rolled on the wet floor.Under the pain in my head I heard a new noise. The sound of rushing water. It was not a small leak it was a lot of water. The lib
Chapter 25: The Scent of Silver
The darkness felt like a weight on me. Without being able to see my other senses became super sharp to make up for it. I could feel everything around me.The water beneath my boots sloshed slowly. It was ankle-deep and cold. I could hear Mikhails breathing against my right shoulder. His chest was. Falling against mine as he braced his good shoulder against the iron door. Then there was a screeching sound. It was coming from the side of the iron barrier. The sound was high-pitched and agonizing. It sounded like metal under a lot of stress. The cleaners had brought a machine down into the flooded corridor. It was a spreader. The rubber gaskets around the frame were already tearing. Water was spraying into our room."Elara " Mikhail hissed through his teeth. His muscles were straining. The door was shifting a little. He said, "The frame is buckling. You have than two minutes.""I'm working " I whispered. My hands were sweeping across the countertop of the darkroom workbench. I was
Chapter 26: The Chemical Exposure
The light that was shining in my face did not move. It just kept on shining, when Mikhail and the lead operative fell to the floor sending a huge wave of saltwater crashing across the darkroom. The second cleaner was still. His suppressed pistol was still pointed directly at me. He was completely calm and balanced like a robot. To him I was not a person. I was something that needed to be eliminated. I was a problem that needed to be solved."Drop the container " a voice said from behind the mask. The voice was synthesized so it did not sound like a person. My fingers tightened around the neck of the heavy glass amber bottle in my hand. This bottle had the highly concentrated hydroquinone developer in it. In my hand I was holding the sealed plastic tank that had the film in it. We did not have time to do a -stage chemical development. We did not have time to wait and see what would happen. If I dropped the tank the truth would be lost. If I got shot the truth would also be lost.My le
Chapter 27: The Developer’s Hand
The exhaust shaft was like a metal throat coughing up heat and ash over the place. I scrambled through the corrugated tube my knees scraping against the rivets. The plastic developing tank was knocking rhythmically against my ribs inside the wet canvas pouch. It was not a feeling let me tell you.Behind me Mikhail was a presence his boots sliding against the soot-choked metal as he used his one good arm to drag his massive frame upward. I could hear him grunting with effort his breathing getting heavier by the second. The air grew sweeter, colder stripping away the sting of the darkroom chemicals. It was a relief to be honest. Finally with a desperate heave I tumbled out of the vents and onto the muddy grass of the eastern lawn. The storm hit me like a slap in the face. The freezing rain immediately began washing the soot from my face. I barely had time to blink before a wall of white light blinded me. I raised my hand to shield my eyes. It did not help much. Two powered halogen headl
Chapter 28: The Negative Revelation
As I sat in the back of the vintage town car I could smell the leather and tobacco. The rain outside added a scent to the air. The tinted windows blurred the view of Long Island, which was rapidly disappearing into a watery mess. The highway lamps flashed by in a blur as the driver sped towards JFK.The space in the backseat was. Dark. It felt suffocatingly tense. Mikhail was slanted against the door his jaw clenched shut. He was using a linen handkerchief to stem the steady trickle of blood from his forehead. His breathing was shallow. His left arm was still immobilized from the electrical burns. His stormy eyes never left my hands. I was working on the film roll trying to develop the negatives."Forty minutes " Mikhail rasped, his voice cutting through the hum of the tires on the wet asphalt. "The inspectors will have realized Anthonys dead body doesn't match the broadcast trail. They'll flag every terminal by the time we hit the tarmac.""Then we have to be done before we park
Chapter 29: The Shadow on the Tarmac
The sound of the rain hitting the roof of the town car was like a person banging on a metal drum. I looked out the windshield and all I saw was a blur of light from the airport. It was like we were stuck in a room with no shadows.Elara was not talking to me. She was just sitting there with her fingers on the edges of the film strip. Her eyes were wide open. She was staring at one of the pictures with a scared look on her face. I had never seen her look so scared not even when we were falling off that cliff. Then I heard a tapping noise on the window. It was the man in the trench coat. He was hitting the glass with his knuckles. My right hand went down to the floor. I felt something hard. It was the piece of wood we had taken from the cellar. I was thinking about using it to defend myself. My left arm was hurting a lot. I was so scared that I did not feel the pain. If this was the end I was not going to go down without a fight."Don't " Elara said in a voice. She was not looking at me
Chapter 30: The Three-Minute Threshold
The cabin door of the Gulfstream closed behind me with a thud, like a bank vault slamming shut. The storm outside was suddenly. The silence was so complete that it made my ears ring. The air conditioning hummed to life filling the air with the smell of leather and ozone. It was a contrast to the scent of burning cedar and chemical sulfur that still clung to my skin.Mikhail collapsed into the cream leather armchair his massive frame sinking deep into the cushions. He let out a breath his head falling back against the headrest as his right hand squeezed his left shoulder. The skin beneath his torn sleeve was a mess of red blisters and gray ash from the darkroom short-circuit."We're moving " he muttered, his eyes tracking the tilt of the floor as the jet began to taxi through the blinding rain. ". The grid feels too clean, Elara. Nikolai is a businessman. He doesn't own the sky.""He doesn't have to " I said, my voice barely above a whisper. My attention wasn't on the windows or the mo
