First Night as King
The stadium didn’t sleep. It couldn’t. Seventy three dead stood at the gates, on the stairs, in the tunnels. They didn’t get tired. They didn’t breathe. They just waited. That was the point.Vaeloric sat on the fifty yard line. The paint was gone. The turf was mud and blood. He had a bottle of water in his hands. It was half full. From before the sky tore. He wasn’t thirsty. He just needed to hold something that wasn’t a weapon.Kael dropped down next to him. “Orion’s in the press box. He’s reading. Not sleeping. Guy said he doesn’t sleep much. I believe him.”“Good,” Vaeloric said. “If he’s reading, he’s not stabbing.”“Yet,” Kael said. “You trust him?”“No,” Vaeloric said. “But the Matriarch says he knows where the World Gates are. I need that more than I need to feel safe.”The Matriarch’s fragment hovered behind them. “You need both. The Faceless One is coming. Chapter 36. The Eclipse Order doesn’t send warnings. Lira’s words were the warning.”“Then we keep watch,” Vaeloric said
The Ruined University
The city looked worse in the daylight.Night hid the worst of it. Dawn showed everything. Burned-out cars stacked like bones. Buildings with their sides torn off, rooms open to the sky like dollhouses. Ash fell slow. It never stopped anymore.Vaeloric led the column. Bone titan piece took point. It was two ribs and a spine fused to a street sign, but it was the biggest thing they had. The hunter corpse walked right. Shotgun ready. Kael took left. Rifle across his back, knife in hand. He hated the rifle. Said it was too loud. Knives were quiet.Orion stayed behind Vaeloric. He had his book open, but he wasn’t reading. He was watching streets. “Sub-Sector 7,” Orion said. “Two blocks. The university was the biggest building before the sky tore. Now it’s just the biggest grave.”“Grave’s fine,” Vaeloric said. “I work good in graves.”The twenty undead followed. No sound. No breathing. Just feet on glass and concrete. Territory Authority didn’t reach here. They were slower outside the sta
The Faceless One
The thing wearing Kael’s face stood at the top of the stairs. It smiled with Kael’s mouth. It had Kael’s scar over the left eyebrow. The one he got when Lira’s people burned his group. It even had the dirt under his nails. But Kael was standing next to Vaeloric. Breathing hard. Knife out. Looking at himself.“Shit,” the real Kael said. “That’s new.”The Faceless One tilted its head. Same way Kael did when he was thinking. “New,” it said. Kael’s voice. Perfect. “Yes. New face. Yours was easy. You’re angry. Angry men have tells.”The Death Knight didn’t answer. It moved. One step. Then it was there. No run. No sound. Just gone from the table and present at the stairs. The sword came up. The Faceless One didn’t dodge. It laughed. “Sovereign tech. You think that works on me?” It changed. Kael’s face melted. The skin ran like wax. Under it was nothing. No bone. No blood. Just smooth gray. Then it built a new face. Elara’s. Hair. Eyes. The cut on her lip from yesterday. “Elara doesn’t
The Chimera Lord
The Chimera Lord filled the library doorway. He was eight feet tall without the skull. With it, nine. The lion head on his left shoulder was alive. It breathed. It bled. The snake on the right was dead but moving. Its tongue tasted the air. The bull skull in the middle had red eyes. No pupils. Just red.He carried a streetlight like it was a bat. The base was twisted into a grip. The top was bent and sharp. “Stadium King,” he said. Three voices. Man, beast, and something else. “The Gate called me. It sings to monsters. I am the song.”[Chimera Lord – Sovereign Class Mutant] [Abilities: Tri-Beast Core, Regeneration, Seismic Swing] [Threat Level: Catastrophic] [Proximity Bonus: World Gate +30% Power]“Fall back to the stairs,” Vaeloric said. “He’s stronger with the Gate behind us.”“No,” the Death Knight said. It stepped forward. “He is stronger when you run. Fight him here.”The Chimera Lord laughed. The lion roared. The sound knocked dust off the shelves. Books fell. “You bro
The First World Gate
Vaeloric didn’t sleep. He laid on a med table in the stadium’s trainer room. Elara cut. She used a bone saw from the old first aid kit. It wasn’t made for arms. It was made for fingers. It took a long time.“Talk to me,” she said. “Keeps you awake. If you sleep, you might not wake up.”“Fine,” Vaeloric said. His teeth were clenched. “What do you want to talk about?”“Joss,” she said. “He asked if you were going to die. I said no. Was I lying?”“No,” Vaeloric said. “Takes more than an arm.”The saw hit bone. Elara swore. “Sorry.”“Don’t be,” Vaeloric said. “Just finish.”Kael stood at the door. Watching the hall. “We got movement outside,” he said. “Not Eclipse. Survivors. Beacon’s still pulling them. Twenty more showed up. Mostly kids.”“Feed them,” Vaeloric said. “Put them in the stands. Keep them away from the tunnels.”“Already did,” Kael said. “Death Knight’s running drills with the dead. They move better now. Like they know what they’re doing.”“Commander Bond,” the Matriarch sai
The Crownless King
Vaeloric woke to black sky.No sun. No tear. Just black, like the inside of a coffin. He was on stone. Cold. His stump throbbed. His mouth tasted like copper and dirt.“Alive,” Kael said. He was sitting next to him. Rifle across his knees. “You were out for an hour. I thought the arm thing finally took you.”“It didn’t,” Vaeloric said. His voice was rough. “Grave Legion?”Kael nodded past him.Vaeloric turned his head. They stood in rows. Thousands. Skeletons in rusted armor. Some held swords. Some spears. Some nothing. Their bones were yellow. Old. But they stood straight. Silent. Waiting.Twelve hundred and forty three. The System number was right. The Death Knight stood in front of them. Sword point down. It didn’t look at Vaeloric. It looked at the Legion. Like a general seeing his men after a long war.“Vareth,” the Death Knight said. Its voice was in their heads. “We are home.”The Legion didn’t answer. They couldn’t. But they moved. One step. A salute. Bone on bone.“Chapter 43
Kingdom Come
The sky was on fire. Not metaphor. Real fire. The tear above Central Stadium ripped wider after Vaeloric brought the Legion through. Black turned red. Red turned orange. Ash fell hot now. It burned when it hit skin.People screamed in the stands. Sixty living became six hundred overnight. The Beacon worked too well. Survivors came from all over the city. They saw the Legion and froze. Twelve hundred skeletons standing in formation didn’t look safe.“Elara!” Kael yelled. “Get them back! Tunnels! Now!”Elara was already moving. “You heard him! Down! Go! Don’t look at them, they won’t hurt you!”Joss grabbed her hand. “Is he dead?” he asked. He pointed at Vaeloric.Vaeloric was on the grass. Not moving. Blood crusted on his face. His stump was black. His breathing was shallow.“No,” Elara said. “He’s just stupid.”The Death Knight stood over Vaeloric. Sword point down. Guarding. The hunter corpse stood next to it. Shotgun up. The Legion didn’t move. They waited.[Global Event: Phase 2 –
Ash and Crowns
The stadium didn’t cheer. It burned.Vorgath’s body was gone, but the heat stayed. Lava ran in gutters where rain should be. The south stands were a pit. The field was glass in places. The Legion stood in it. They didn’t burn. Bone didn’t care about heat.Vaeloric woke to Elara’s hands on his face. Not slapping. Checking. Her fingers were cold. That meant his skin was hot. Fever.“Don’t,” he said. His voice was sandpaper. “Don’t waste time on me.”“You killed a god,” Elara said. “You get five minutes of my time.”She poured water on a rag. Pressed it to his forehead. It hissed. “You’re cooking,” she said. “Overuse of Grave Grip. Again. Your body’s eating itself to fuel it.”“Then feed it,” Vaeloric said. He sat up. The hunter corpse helped. It didn’t let go after. It kept a hand under his arm. “Where’s Kael?”“Here,” Kael said. He walked up from the tunnel. Soot on his face. Cut on his cheek. “Living are in the parking garage. All six hundred. Scared. Hungry. But alive.”“Casualties?”
Fractured Command
Dawn didn’t come. The sky stayed black with a red tear. Ash fell warm. It stuck to skin. The stadium lights were dead, but the Legion didn’t need light. Twelve hundred forty three skeletons stood in the field. Still. Waiting.Vaeloric stood in front of them. New arm clicked when he moved. Bone on bone. No skin. No pain. Just cold. It was stronger than the old one. He made a fist. The air popped.“Report,” he said. The Death Knight stepped forward. “Legion is armed. Armor is poor. Weapons are brittle. But they will march.”“Living?”“Six hundred and two,” Kael said. He walked up from the tunnels. “Two more came in last night. Beacon’s still pulling. We fed them. Barely. Elara says we got three days before hunger riots.”“We won’t be here in three days,” Vaeloric said. “We take the city today.”“About that,” Kael said. “We got a problem.”He pointed. At the edge of the field, ten skeletons stood apart from the Legion. They weren’t in formation. They had red marks on their foreheads. Pai
The Godless Covenant
The city was a corpse. Vaeloric marched through it. Legion behind him. Twelve hundred thirty three now. The ten red marks were back in line, but they walked last. Watching. Waiting. The living stayed at the stadium. Six hundred fifty five now. More came in while they marched. Elara held the med bay. Kael held the walls. Joss held a knife he wasn’t supposed to have.“Left,” Orion said. He walked beside Vaeloric with his new book. “Bank’s two blocks. Godless Covenant made it a church. They’re praying to nothing. That’s the point.”“Nothing can’t answer,” Vaeloric said. His bone hand clicked. “So why pray?”“To prove they don’t need answers,” Orion said. “Eclipse ideology. The System is a god. The Ash Gods are gods. They reject both. They want to unmake everything. Start over.”“With what left?” Vaeloric asked.“Nothing,” Orion said. “That’s the goal.”The street opened into a plaza. The bank was there. Old stone. Pillars. Before the Cataclysm it held money. Now it held people. Hundred
