Chapter Twenty One: Mischief
The second rat came through the wall, there was an open door but it decided to come through a metal plate, tearing it open with ease.It was the size of a large dog, both heads low and swinging independently. One head faced one person. The thing had talons instead of claws with a yellowish slimy liquid secreting from it. It burned a hole in the metal floor of the caravan. Exuding steam as metal shrunk back from it."*Oh my, you will be the first sovereign to die as a scion and get killed by a rat.*” Heron cuckled in his head. “*I hope you see the corrosive liquid that will melt you with a single touch?*”"I can see that," Jett said with laboured breath. He's seen a Titanic robot, a spider like one. He had been chased by scraps of metal. Hell, he's fought killer machines but when he saw this rat, he wished he'd died when Monica shot him.The rat's right head opened its mouth and hissed, a sound like steam escaping a pipe, and Jett felt his body do something it hadn't done in a while.
Chapter Twenty Two: Cavalry
The howling woke them all at once. It was quite obvious for the quiet atmosphere of the wasteland.Jett was on his feet before he was fully conscious, he still remembered the rat they’d fought. Around him the camp scrambled upright and chaos almost ensued, but they were all Talent users in their own right, so they managed to calm down. The wolves were already at the edge of the camp, they could see glowing eyes piercing through the darkness ahead of them. They were large, low to the ground, with jagged spines running the length of their backs like broken glass fused into flesh. Their breath came out wrong, yellowish, drifting into the air with sickening cracks.Anoma stepped forward before anyone else moved. "Stay back," he said. "All of you." Everyone got ready but they all stood back. Jett wondered why these high class students submitted naturally to Anoma. The first wolf came in fast and Anoma hit it with something invisible. The wolf's charge broke apart mid-stride, its own momen
Chapter Twenty Three: Tale of Revolt I
They waited for three hours before the sign of anyone. Anoma and Jett were awfully quiet but Red and Gracia seemed to have a lot to talk about. They sat in the dust outside the supply caravan, Anoma with Cavalry across his knees, Gracia reading something she'd pulled from her pack and Red joining in and describing stuff. Jett watched the ruins and said nothing. Then the first group came stumbling through the eastern gap yelling in panic. Jett’s first thought was that they were being chased by those filthy rats or the wolves. So they rushed out to meet them, ready to fight mindless beasts. There were nine of them, and two of them were wounded limping off the shoulders of others and frantically trying to match the speed of the others. Their leader was a tall girl with a split lip and maniacal eyes."Men of Iron," she said before anyone asked. "They are coming for us." She looked back at the gap they'd come through. "They were right behind us."“Hey, calm down. Speak to me! Men of Iron
Chapter Twenty Four: Tale of Revolt II
The two students managed to break into the last cage before the Men of Iron arrived. There were two of them from the patrol unit and they were surprised to find a dozen students charging at them when they arrived. It didn't take much time for the children to hack them into pieces. Jett had his mouth open in awe at the sheer ferocity. It seemed they realized it was a do or die affair, so they fought with a different will. When they were done. The two that Jett had given weapons turned to him expecting orders from him. He realized at that moment he was the leader of the group. He looked at the two. “You guys, take three people from your team and take the eastern section, kill anything that is metallic and check if anything is going on in that shed.”They did as he said without questions. "Follow me," he said quietly to the rest. "Stay close and stay quiet until I tell you otherwise."He led them to the enclosure on the southern section, moving quickly because he was on a time schedule
Chapter Twenty Five: Old Debt
The mountain pass spat them out on the other side into a different world entirely. The ruins here had been reconstructed, shaped into a functional city, but the bones of the ancient civilization still remained. They climbed the hill directly ahead and from its crest the school was visible in the distance, its towers catching the last of the afternoon light."We can make it before dark," Red said.Jett nodded and they moved forward. They walked for several hours, following the obvious terrain. However, they soon realized that the school was farther than they thought. The light was gone by the time they reached a supply point on the lower road, a wide sealed caravan, panel glowing blue, large enough to hold all of them if nobody was particular about personal space. They bought what they could afford between them and filed inside. The dead were laid along the far wall with whatever care the space allowed. Five of them. Nobody said anything about it directly. They just made sure there w
Chapter Twenty Six: That Level Again
Zach crouched in front of him with a smile on his face. He had a small dagger dangling from his belt and Jett could see an almost maniacal demeanor to his facial expression."You know," he said, "when Monica pulled that trigger I watched your head explode. I watched it. And then somehow you show up here, alive, walking around like nothing happened." He tilted his head. "That is not human, Jett.”He stood and looked at the masked figures around him. "This is Jettai Ghalkan. He was a talentless floor worker. No class, no rank, no ability. Monica, my ex, shot him in the head at close range and he died on our bedroom floor." He looked back down at Jett. "And yet.""Zach." Jett's voice came out lower than he intended. "You are making a mistake.""Am I?" Zach crouched again. "You show up at the school of talents as an Artificer. You take down five upperclassmen on your third day. You survived the wasteland, and now you are on your way as the leader of a crew." He smiled. "I just want to kno
Chapter Twenty Seven: Limbo
Jett opened his eyes and he was in an empty void. The void had no walls but it felt enclosed. It had no light source but everything in it was visible. It had no floor but he was standing on something. It moved and stayed still simultaneously, shifting at the edges like something breathing, but the center of it, where he stood, was perfectly motionless.Jett looked at his hands. They were there. He didn't know why that surprised him.A girl was sitting in front of him.Black hair, straight and simply kept. A slim frame. A long white dress that touched the non-floor beneath her and spread slightly, the hem dissolving at the edges into the shimmering of the void itself. She was looking at him with a patient expression."You are dead," she said.Jett looked around at the void. "Again," he said."Again," she agreed."Where am I?""Limbo." She said it simply. The same word the screen had shown him the first time, in what felt like another life, which he supposed it was.He sat down across
Chapter Twenty Eight: What We Are
Jett got to his feet slowly, testing each part of himself as it came online. His chest felt wrong, a deep structural wrongness where the blade had gone in, but when he pressed his hand against it there was no wound. Not even a scar, but he still felt it mentally.“Heron?” He checked for the system, having seen her as an humanoid entity, she carried more weight to him now.“*We just talked a few minutes ago, can't you go a full hour without pestering me?*” She replied.Jett smiled and didn't say a word. He sat down and sat by the fire.Red held out a stick without asking. A rough cut piece of meat was skewered on the end, blackened at the edges from the fire."Rat?" Jett asked."Big one," Red said. "Was already dead when I found it. I think something else killed it first." He glanced toward the dark beyond the fire where a large shape was just visible on the ground. "I was not going to waste it."Jett took the stick and ate. It tasted like bland but his body received it gratefully. The
Chapter Twenty Nine: Confirmed Dead
The road back to school was quiet. They didn't talk much. Red's pace was steady and slow, he seemed to have a lot on his mind. Jett also followed in the same manner. The school gates came into view mid-morning.When they cleared the final bend in the road the full picture of the school assembled itself. The entire student body was assembled in the main courtyard, seven hundred people at least, arranged in loose rows facing a line of instructors. The assembly was interrupted as the guards opened the gate to let the two in. The two guards were rather surprised to see the two of them and one of them had to march them in, gazing at them cautiously. When they reached the grounds, everyone turned their head towards them. The silence that followed was deafening. It was Orz that approached them first. He came across the courtyard with an unhurried stride. He stopped in front of them and looked at them both for a long moment. His expression was unreadable."You were confirmed dead," he said
Chapter Thirty: The Art of Forging
Sleep didn't come for Jett, he turned on the bed several times, unable to close his eyes even for a few seconds. He lay on the medical bay bed and watched the shadows on the ceiling and listened to the sound of Red breathing steadily on the other side of the room. Every time something moved in the corridor outside, every time a door opened somewhere in the building, his eyes would fling open..Zach knew he was alive. Zach knew he was at the school. And Zach had already tried twice. He hadn't been able to avenge the greatest betrayal done to him, instead, Zach had killed him again. He sat up at last."*You are not sleeping?*" Heron said. “*Guess there is really no sleep for the wicked.*”"Shut up," Jett retorted.“*Oooh, someone laid on the wrong side of the bed, what's the matter, are you feeling useless?*”“Oh, for the sake of the gods, leave me alone.” "*Instead of whining like a baby, get up and do something useful.*"Jett sighed and decided to take Heron’s advice. He reached int
