CHAPTER 11
Back at the Cole Tower offices, Elias kept looking at the Vantage Analytics file. The note.."The job is done"..was looking right at him. Nadia's work, most probably. The marriage to get away from an arranged match, the husband getting rid of conveniently. His phone vibrated. Unknown number. He picked up. "Elias Cole?" A woman's voice, cool and calm. "This is Sera Holt. Victor Pascal's daughter. My dad wants to meet. Very soon. He says it's about an alliance...and a proposal."Elias hesitated, remembering Solomon's mention earlier. "Tell him I'll think about it. He hung up and looked at the shiny city. The Cole File, the enemies around, the proposal of marriage from a mafia boss-it was all speeding. Then his phone vibrated again. Nadia. He ignored it three times, but when she called again, he answered."Elias, " she said, dripping with mock outrage. "What on earth have you done? Derek called me in a panic from the sidewalk, like he's been arrested or something. You think you can humil
CHAPTER 12
The Cole File had more weight than a stack of papers could hold.It was 2 a.m. When Elias was in Cole House's dim study with very little light, and through the bullet proof glass, the city lights of Starlight City were seen twinkling like warning from a distance. Helen's sealed box was still sitting unopened on the desk made of mahogany, it was Solomon who had brought it in an hour before with the very strict message that it must not be opened before him.He had not opened it yet. His mind was busy with flashbacks of the incidents in the day. Derek had been harshly ridiculed by a crowd at the Alderton, one could hardly believe the amount of hate that Nadia showed during her bloody massacre in the Cole Tower. The blank echoes around the stairs of the station were a loud testimony. The patient man had not been just waiting along; he was in the process of getting ready to move. There was a knock on the door which caused a break in the silence. Solomon came, looking as if he had not slep
CHAPTER 13
The name written by Helen disturbed Elias throughout the night. He hadn't closed his eyes even once. Standing instead on the large balcony of Cole House at dawn, the huge city below still asleep, Elias looked out. Behind him, the study table was where the contents of the sealed box had been scattered. A single name among all the others grabbed him by the heart for every moment from the very first time Solomon had mentioned it.Reid.Solomon's loyal, even if silent, partner. Here was the guy unaware nothing got past him. Could a spy be here, in his very midst?Elias clenched his teeth. His three decades-long training in patience kept him from the temptation to jump to conclusions Still the proof was overwhelming. A few discrepancies in the timing. Sharing of information that only a very close person can give. The gunfire on the station steps were so precise that of course, they were staged.A polite rap at the door was the thing that managed to distract him. Claire came in with a fres
CHAPTER 14
The counterattack hit Elias much harder than he had anticipated. By 9 a.m. the leaked penthouse video was on every screen in Starlight City. The clip first showed Derek striking Elias who in turn gave Derek a hard punch which made a loud sound. Nadia was shown standing like a statue in a silk robe just before shouting for the security to come. The public opinion which was very favorably disposed towards Nadia yesterday changed to an extremely unfavorable reaction to her. Elias was observing the consequences from his office in Cole Tower. He had his arms crossed and his face was not showing any sign of emotion. Solomon was pacing nearby. "Her attorneys are yelling that this is defamation. The Vances are ready to take legal action against us for emotional suffering. Though, it is the court of public opinion that is ripping her to pieces.""That's great," Elias whispered. "She was craving the spotlight. So, here it is." His phone buzzed. It was Nadia again. This time he picked up on
CHAPTER 15
Chaos at Whitmore Estate did not end with the day but was rather like blood on marble that stains the night. While Elias's security team was securing the upper floors, Elias was standing still amongst the debris in the foyer. There was a sound of glass breaking with every step he took. Derek had managed to escape unnoticed, slipping through a side exit like the rat he was. Nadia was still there panting, her flawless blonde hair disheveled, her eyes blazing with a mixture of hatred and something almost like fear."You will suffer for this," she murmured, throwing him a warning glance, then going up to him despite Marcus's men trying to stop her. "Derek has secrets of your darling mother's... things that will make the Cole family name worse than anyone can imagine."Elias's black eyes stared at her unflinching. "Then let it be. The truth was already out in that penthouse footage. You used me. You tried to kill me. Now you are going to pay the price."Her laugh was a taste of bitternes
CHAPTER 16
The top-floor private dining room of a quiet restaurant by the river was one of the places that offered the best views of Starlight City. The large windows from floor to ceiling showcased the sparkling cityscape while the dim atmosphere, the faint sound of piano music and the quiet voices of the diners contributed to the overall feel of a sophisticated and elegant setting. Elias showed up exactly on the dot of the appointed time. He was a tall and well-built man whose features were stamped by the calm and quiet manner of someone who has been a keen observer for a long time. He had on a well-fitting suit of dark color which evidently cost a lot more than his previous annual pay. Still, his deep dark eyes that looked right through you had that same calm, watchful and unshaken expression. When she saw him walking towards her, Sera Pascal stood up and walked slowly to the door and held it for him to enter first. She was gorgeous with her long reddish-brown hair, and her striking green
CHAPTER 17
Rust, saltwater, and old secrets were the smells in the dock warehouse. Elias came at midnight and the black SUV smoothly stopped under the sodium lights that were flickering. He thought he had followed Derek's instructions exactly but in fact Marcus and a six-man security team had been in the shadows with their weapons ready and eyes very alert. One was not going to come alone tonight.Out of the car came Elias, his figure tall and athletic, gave an imposing look, in the dark suit. The black eye he got from the penthouse fight had slightly faded but it was a reminder of how little he was only a few days ago. From a guy who mopped floors as a facilities coordinator to the man who owned the same hotel where all the trouble started. His dark piercing eyes looked around the place with the patience of someone who has been at the bottom of the world for thirty-two years. From behind the shipping containers, Derek Alderton appeared. He looked as if he had been through a lot and was beggin
CHAPTER 18
The official engagement announcement had been planned for that evening at Victor Pascal's heavily guarded mansion, and the city had already perceived the change in authority. The old money of Starlight City spoke in hushed tones at their country clubs and private jets. The "janitor billionaire" was not just a joke anymore he was a force that everyone could see was coming.Elias was in the master bedroom of Cole House, putting on the last touches of his cufflinks on a bespoke midnight-black suit that would have been a house price to most people. The mirrored image was of a changed man: six-feet tall, athletic shape which had long been hidden under a facilities coordinator uniform, dark intense eyes showing the quiet determination of someone who has waited a lifetime for this moment.A light knock was heard. Sera didn't wait for a response and just came in, stunning with her loose auburn hair and a beautiful deep green dress that highlighted her lovely face plus the sharp intellect h

CHAPTER 19
The day after the attack on Victor Pascal's property, the sky over Starlight City was a bloody red when the sun came up. Elias was on the balcony of Cole House, which was strong enough to withstand any force, looking at the extensive areas beneath him which were still dripping with last night's rain. He was stiff and sore all over from the fight, his knuckles swollen and discolored, and a small wound on his left arm where a bullet grazed him but his thoughts were as sharp as a razor. A long endurance of thirty-two years has led him to be able to stand such nights as these.Without speaking, Sera came up to him. She had her reddish brown hair tied up, and was wearing a plain black sweater and jeans that somehow managed to make her look friendly and at the same time strong. She silently put her hand in his. It was a gesture that by now did not seem forced, since it had been made in the heat of gunfire and through shared survival."My dad's condition is quite good, " she murmured. "But
