CHAPTER 21 — An Incredibly Valuable Monster
Aldric and Darius walked down the main street of Arkan City. The urban bustle still filled every street corner; merchants were busy offering their wares, while adventurers passed back and forth with weapons slung at their waists. In the middle of the journey, Aldric suddenly spoke up, "Darius.""Yes, Master?" Darius turned immediately, focusing his attention.Aldric glanced at him from behind his mask. "Speaking of the official identity we discussed earlier... Perhaps one day I will use your identity."Darius blinked in confusion. "My identity? For matters that strictly require an official identity?" He furrowed his brow. "But why not use Master's own identity?"Aldric smiled thinly, though the smile was hidden behind his mask. "Because I don't want too many people knowing about my presence."Darius fell silent. The answer didn't truly answer his question. However, the longer he knew Aldric, the more he realized one thing: the man in front of him was shrouded in secrets that he didn't
CHAPTER 22 — The Suspicious Masked Man
A Steel Fang Wolf, a Horned Earth Boar, and a Crimson Claw Panther. The three carcasses of D-Rank monsters now lay stiffly on the floor of the Monster Trading Hall.Under normal circumstances, such a sight was not particularly shocking to the hall's occupants. An experienced C-Rank adventurer was certainly capable of hunting D-Rank monsters, and even B-Rank adventurer parties frequently brought home catches of much higher quality. However, several people within the crowd slowly began to notice a glaring anomaly."Wait a minute..." A veteran adventurer furrowed his brow while sharpening his gaze. "That's three monsters at once.""So what?" shrugged his companion next to him.The adventurer pointed toward Aldric with his chin. "Look, there are only the two of them over there."Instantly, the atmosphere around the service counter grew tense. Sure enough, everyone's attention had initially been too focused on the sudden appearance of the monster carcasses that they had completely missed s
CHAPTER 23 — The Guild Master's Offer
The Guild Master’s office felt far quieter and more authoritative compared to the noisy Monster Trading Hall outside. Inside the oak-paneled room, Aldric sat casually in one of the leather chairs, while Darius stood firmly behind him. Across the desk sat the Guild Master, while the stoutly built middle-aged man serving as the Vice Guild Master chose to stand near a large window with his arms folded over his chest. For a few moments, silence enveloped the room. The Guild Master's sharp gaze kept observing Aldric's movements. The masked youth in front of him felt truly anomalous. There was no ripple or aura of mana that he could sense from Aldric's body. However, the three D-Rank monster carcasses the youth had brought were clearly no coincidence, especially since the way those monsters had been executed indicated a level of strength far above that of the average D-Rank adventurer."Young man," the Guild Master finally broke the silence with his heavy baritone voice.Aldric raised his h
CHAPTER 24 — Not a Slave!
After wrapping up their business with the mission and collecting their payment from the Guild, Aldric and Darius finally stepped out of the Monster Trading Hall. Outside, the atmosphere of Arkan City remained as vibrant as ever; the main street buzzed with the loud cries of merchants peddling their wares, blending with the rhythmic heavy footsteps of passing adventurers clad in full armor and weapons.Amidst their casual stroll through the crowd, Aldric suddenly broke the silence. "Darius.""Yes, Master?" Darius replied instantly, adjusting his pace to match.Aldric cast a brief glance at the ragged, tattered clothes still clinging to his companion's body. "Show me the best clothing and equipment shop in this city."Darius caught himself off guard for a moment upon hearing the command. However, he quickly recovered his composure and gave a obedient nod. "Right away, Master."In his mind, Darius assumed that Aldric wanted to upgrade his own combat gear after successfully pocketing a he
CHAPTER 25 — THE RIGHT HAND
"Don't just stand there like a statue by the door," Aldric said, giving Darius’s back a gentle nudge to guide him further into the shop.Left with no choice, Darius resigned himself to follow his master’s lead. The moment they stepped inside, several neatly uniformed shop assistants approached them and bowed politely. "Welcome to our shop. How may we assist you today?"Aldric gave a formal nod, then pointed a finger toward Darius. "Find the best set of clothes that suits this man."Darius panicked instantly. "M-Master, there is no need for the best! Ordinary clothes are more than enough!"Aldric dismissed the protest with complete indifference. "Include a set of protective body gear as well.""That is far too expensive, Master!" Darius lost his composure even more as he caught sight of the price tags on display. Yet, once again, Aldric acted as though he had not heard a single complaint.A few moments later, the staff began bringing out and showcasing various types of combat attire be
CHAPTER 26 - ALDRIC'S FIRST DINNER
After surviving in the Forbidden Forest for so long, Aldric could finally feel what a normal dinner was like again. It was no longer the river fish he caught himself every day, or bland monster meat grilled half-heartedly over a bonfire. Tonight, in front of him was served real food made by the tavern chef. The aroma of grilled meat was instantly smelled strongly as soon as they sat down. On top of the wooden table, dishes were already piling up. There was thick soup that was still steaming, wheat bread, heavily seasoned meat, down to several foreign foods that Aldric saw for the very first time since being stranded in this world.Darius sat across from him in a stiff position. He still looked unaccustomed to his new suit of clothes. On the contrary, Aldric was just relaxed and immediately grabbed the food in front of him without hesitation."This is delicious," Aldric murmured after chewing the first piece of meat. He then shifted to take the next dish. "This one also has the right s
CHAPTER 27 - NERO
The room they rented had adequate facilities; one spacious room with two separate beds that looked comfortable. As soon as the wooden room door was tightly closed and locked from the inside, the atmosphere around them instantly changed to be much calmer and private, completely the opposite of the hustle and bustle of Arkan City's streets, which could still be faintly heard outside.Darius took a seated position on one of the wooden chairs available in the corner of the room, while Aldric walked slowly toward the large window that faced the street. For a few moments, neither of them opened their mouths to speak. Until finally, Aldric let out a long breath that sounded quite heavy."Wearing this mask constantly turns out to be quite tiring," Aldric complained softly. Darius reflexively turned his head toward the window. However, before he could process or ask what the meaning of those words was, Aldric had already raised one of his hands toward his face.Slowly, Aldric removed the Kirin
CHAPTER 28 — The Contract Beast (Nero)
The night grew later, enveloping Arkan City. Inside the dimly lit inn room, a clump of shadow in the corner of the room suddenly moved abnormally. Darius, who possessed a watchful instinct, immediately turned his head quickly. The pitch-black shadow slowly appeared to expand on top of the floor, before finally a small creature crawled out from the darkness. The creature resembled a small dragon with pitch-black scales that appeared shiny. Nero, the small dragon, yawned widely as if he had just woken up from a sound sleep."Kyu..." it sounded softly.Darius instantly froze. His brain seemed to stop working right at that exact moment. On the other hand, Nero appeared to tilt his head, staring confusedly toward Darius who looked tense."Kyu?"Thud! The chair Darius was sitting on instantly fell thudding to the floor after he reflexively jumped backward to maintain a distance. His index finger pointed straight toward Nero in a violently trembling condition due to an extraordinary horror.
CHAPTER 29 - A Secret That Must Not Be Heard
Aldric smiled thinly behind his mask. He ignored Darius's surprise. "Alright, Nero's matter is settled. Now, let us return to the initial topic. Continue your story that was interrupted earlier."The look on Darius's face instantly changed to become highly serious. The ripple of panic due to Nero's appearance suddenly vanished, replaced by a heavy clump of emotion. He stayed silent for quite a long time, looking at his own fingers before finally opening his mouth again."I have been a slave since I was very small. At that time, I was placed to work at a luxury residence belonging to a nobleman in this Arkan City.""So, you were born from a slave family?" Aldric asked.Darius shook his head firmly. "No, Master. My family was initially free people.""Then, how did you end up at the auction block?""It all started with debt," Darius drew a short breath. "Actually, in the past we were not a poor family. Our life was classified as quite good and sufficient. My father worked as a small merc
CHAPTER 30 - The Enemy's Name
"I myself actually didn't know who the figure of Aldric Stormblade they meant was," Darius continued without suspicion. "But those nobles appeared highly terrified to death. They even said that if the secret regarding that child leaked to the public's ears, everyone involved in that conspiracy was guaranteed to die a miserable death."Nero completely stopped moving on top of the table, as if feeling the tension that suddenly peaked from his owner's body. Meanwhile under the table, Aldric's hand slowly clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white with tension."They also chanced to mention a special squad that was sent and never returned again from the Forbidden Forest," Darius added."Then, what happened after that?" Aldric asked with a voice suppressed as low as possible to hide his anger.Darius smiled bitterly, full of irony. "After that, they realized my presence inside the room. They knew I had heard everything."Without needing to hear the continuation, Aldric could alread
