The front gate of Heaven’s Peak wasn’t just a portal; it was currently a blooming catastrophe of tactical misdirection.Zarox stepped onto the dirt path outside the perimeter, holding a bag of fertilizer in one hand and a set of master-override blueprints in the other. Behind him, Kaelith and the Obsidian survivors were busy trying to convince a row of man-eating hedges that, no, they could not eat the current Imperial guest, despite how annoying he was."Stop that," Zarox commanded the ivy, which was currently probing the pockets of the Seeker—a thin, wiry man named Vaelin who looked less like an invader and more like a man who hadn’t slept since the last epoch. "We don’t digest visitors, Vaelin. We just, uh, process their inquiries. Leave him alone."Vaelin straightened his dusty gray robes, his eyes flickering with an unsettling, prism-like light. He gripped his compass, staring at the gate as if it were a riddle he was slowly failing to solve. "Your botany has a pulse, Zarox. And

Zarox was halfway through jamming a wedge of solid oak into a groaning floor joist when the silence arrived. It wasn’t a natural silence; it was the abrupt, bone-jarring vacuum of a predatory cat freezing before a pounce. Even the building stopped its obsessive remodeling. Then came the hum—a sound that bypassed the eardrums entirely and vibrated against the base of Zarox’s skull. It sounded like a thousand razor blades parting silk at the exact same time."Grog," Zarox hissed, pulling his hand away from the wall. The grain of the wood had turned translucent, shifting from oak to a shimmering, jagged crystalline structure. "Don’t move. Whatever the hell you do, don't exhale.""Boss, the Seeker just stopped looking at the tax reports," Grog rumbled, his voice strained. "He's staring at the wall like it’s a long-lost girlfriend."In the living-room-turned-mechanical-trap, Vaelin was indeed motionless. The prism-like light in his eyes had turned into thin, sharp slits of blue brilliance.

The sound of a mountain-side villa being scrubbed with sentient wire-brushes is surprisingly rhythmic. Zarox didn't appreciate the melody, though. He was sitting at his mahogany desk, head throbbing in sympathy with the pounding outside, trying to make sense of why a delegation of the "Fallen Elders" had decided to wake up in his guest wing after a twenty-hour mushroom-induced stupor. They were currently seated in the audience chamber—if you could call the chaotic collection of repurposed chairs an audience chamber—each looking like a Victorian schoolboy who had spent the night in a gutter. Elder Malakor, the man who had been the primary catalyst for the sect's political indigestion, was attempting to drink water, but his hand was shaking so badly that he was splashing it onto his already-disheveled silk robes.Zarox clicked his pen. "Morning, gentlemen. I trust the 'meditative herbal soak' I ordered for your room was... enlightening?""Enlightening?" Malakor’s voice sounded like grav

The whisper network of Heaven’s Peak didn't move via messengers or magical scrolls; it traveled via the laundry maids, the low-level kitchen apprentices, and the incredibly bored structural maintenance staff. By 7:00 AM, the gossip had solidified into a concrete rumor: the Sect Master wasn't just eccentric; he was allegedly preparing to sell the mountain to the Empire in exchange for a pension in the Southern Isles.Zarox heard the first iteration of this absurdity while he was hiding in the auxiliary pantry, trying to locate a crate of peppermint oil that hadn’t been reclaimed by the Sentient Ivy. "I'm telling you, he’s got his trunk packed," a maid whispered, her voice echoing against the cold stone of the larder. "He’s met with the Imperial Liaison twice, he's firing the Elder-guard, and now he’s clearing out the ancestral vaults. It’s a liquidation sale."Zarox gripped the edge of a shelving unit, his knuckles white. He hadn't been clearing out the vaults for a sale; he’d been tr

Zarox stared at the ancient tombstone located beneath the floorboards of the Sect’s lowest, dampest storage room. It wasn’t a grave; it was a floor safe designed to look like a grave, engraved with the mocking epitaph: HERE LIES THE COWARD, WHO LIVED TO TELL THE TALE."Cowardly Sage, huh?" Zarox wiped a smudge of damp moss off the epitaph. "A man after my own heart. Or perhaps just another stressed-out administrator who didn't want to get involved.""Boss, the floorboards above are shaking again," Grog noted, his massive hand hovering near the trigger-switch of a ventilation shaft. "If we’re going to open the 'Coward's Stash,' let’s make it snappy. The Sect is literally trying to sneeze us out.""Patience, Grog," Zarox hissed. He didn't use a magical incantation or a brute-force chisel. Instead, he pulled out a long, flat file—the exact type of boring, unassuming tool used for fixing jammed drawers. He slotted it into the mouth of the epitaph, which, to his immense lack of surprise, t
