CHAPTER 41 - Real This Time
The welt on the boy's leg split open with a wet tearing sound.Black liquid sprayed across the cave floor and it was thick and reeking of rotFrom inside the wound something moved. They were limbs first, which were segmented and glistening, then a body the size of a fist forcing its way out through torn skin, and the boy's scream cut off into something choking and silent. Then another came out behind it.Then a dozen more. They spread out of the wound in a black wave and scattered across the cave floor in every direction. Each one no larger than a hand but moving with the same wrong speed as the one that had bitten him, eyes catching the firelight in flat red glints."Get back!" Ray shouted, but there was nowhere to get back to.The spiders fanned out fast, climbing the cave walls, dropping from above, scuttling across sleeping bags and supply bags and bare skin. The cave that had felt like shelter erupted into chaos in seconds.Ada swung her pipe wildly, crushing two against the sto
Chapter 42 - Underground Facility, Kansas
Ray's hand closed around the spider before it could spring again. His grip crushed it instantly. Black liquid burst out of his palm, hot and sharp. The burn of it biting into his skin like acid for a single second before it simply stopped. It evaporated into nothing the way the infection always seemed to behave when it had no host left to spread through. He shook his hand out and looked up.The torch beam followed the source of the spider back through the crack in the wall.It traced the narrow gap upward until it widened into the ceiling above them, and there, stretched across the stone in a thick, glistening sheet, was the web.It covered almost the entire upper half of the chamber. Dense layers of it, woven and re-woven over what must have been for years, maybe longer than that, and moving within it.Dozens of small dark shapes shifting in the light."Oh God," Charlie whispered."Nobody move fast, wake everyone, quietly." Ray said quietly. Word passed through the group in low,
Chapter 43 - Ada's Ability
Ray stepped back from the door and ran his hand along the cold metal one more time.He studied the wheel lock and the seams, the way it had been built to withstand far more than a single man's strength."We're not getting through this tonight, not by force and not without knowing what's on the other side." He said and gave a loud exhaling."What do you mean? You're stronger than all of us combined." Charlie said."Strength isn't the problem." Ray nodded toward the wheel. "A vault like this isn't held shut by hinges. It's sealed by pressure, probably bolted from the inside too. I could break the wheel off and still not get it open, and if there's anything live behind it, I don't want to find out what that looks like by forcing my way in blind."Saul rubbed a hand across his face, exhaustion pulling at every line of it. "Then what.""We go above the ground," Ray said. "We find where this connects on the surface. A facility like this doesn't exist without an entrance somewhere up top. We
Chapter 44 - Two Paths
The argument started slowly and grew loud fast."Ray should go up, he's the strongest, If there's resistance up there, soldiers or anything, he's the one who survives it." Charlie said, pacing near the chamber entrance."That's exactly why he should stay, If something goes wrong down here, who handles it without him? You want to send our strongest man away from the group right when we've found a door that just brought the entire facility back to life?"Saul said."He can't be in two places,at the same time, pick one." Ken said."I'm saying choose him for the surface, because up there is where the real danger is., The soldiers, choppers, zombies and whoever built this place." Charlie said."And down here, is a vault that just powered on by itself. You don't know what's behind it and it could be worse than anything up top." Saul shot back.Voices rose over each other. Eli shrank back against the wall, frightened by the sudden anger in people who had been gentle with him all night. Ada
Chapter 45 - The Hatch
Priya pulled the latch and the hatch screamed open on hinges that hadn't seen daylight in longer than the grease on them suggested.A ladder dropped away into darkness below.Rusted rungs bolted into poured concrete, and the smell that rose up to meet them was sharp and clinical, antiseptic mixed with something burnt underneath it."I'll go first," Ken said, already swinging his legs over the edge.He descended slowly, testing each rung before committing his weight.Priya followed close behind him with Charlie bringing up the rear, pulling the hatch most of the way shut above them to avoid drawing attention from the open ground. The ladder ended in a narrow concrete corridor lit by a scattering of emergency lights still running along the ceiling and it casted everything in dim red. Priya's torch swept the space and caught the first room off the corridor, and what she saw made her stop dead in the doorway.Medical equipment lined every wall. Steel examination tables fitted with restr
Chapter 46 - Second Effect
The soldiers closed in from both ends of the corridor, with slowness and certainty.Their weapons were low and steady, and Priya understood instantly there was no path back to the ladder that didn't run straight through them."Surrender, raise your hands up to buy a little time."she breathed, barely moving her lips.Ken's hands went up first. Charlie followed and behind them, Zoe and Saul, who had come up from the chamber below only minutes earlier to check why no word had come back yet, lifted their hands as well. The five of them formed a loose half circle in the dim red light, surrounded on every side."On your knees," the lead soldier said, his voice carrying that same flat mechanical calmness. They lowered themselves slowly, and for a moment it looked like it might end there, it was quiet and controlled and the soldiers were simply securing what they had been sent to secure. But Zoe had other plans. Her hand had found the small metal rod in her jacket pocket the moment the soldi
Chapter 47 - The Compass
Ray came back through the tunnel breathing very hard.Ada saw his face first and stood up fast."Where's Priya?" she asked. "Where's Saul?.""They're gone," Ray said. "Taken, All of them. Priya, Ken, Saul, Zoe, Charlie. A vehicle took them north."Eli's mouth fell open. "What, all of them..?""Yeah all of them," Ray said. "And I'm going after them."He pulled out the compass. It wasn't a normal compass. He had made it himself, the same way he made everything, pulling it from nothing the moment he needed it. He held it flat in his palm and thought about the tracker he'd thrown onto the back of that vehicle. The needle moved once, twice, then settled. It was north."They're still moving fast," Ray said. "But the tracker is working and I can follow it.""You're going alone," Ada said. It wasn't really a question."I have to," Ray said. "I move faster by myself cuz If I bring people with me, I have to protect them while I fight. That slows everything down, but when I'm alone, I can mov
Chapter 48 - Inside
The drive had not taken them far.Ray followed the compass for only thirty minutes before the needle stopped pulling forward and started circling instead. The compass did that the way it did when he was close enough that direction no longer mattered. He slowed his pace and moved into the thicker part of the forest where trees were packed close together. It was a kind of cover built by nature but used now for something else entirely. He almost walked past the entrance. It didn't look like anything. It was just a low ridge covered in moss and fallen branches, the same kind of hidden structure they'd found back at the cave. But this one was much bigger and he could feel it more than see it, a low hum running through the ground under his boots, the sound of machines working somewhere deep below. Then he saw the zombies. They moved between the trees in loose groups, slowly and aimlessly the way infected always moved when nobody was directing them, but there were a lot of them. They we
Chapter 49 - New Soilder
Ray didn't even move or flinch. That was the most important thing. Every instinct in him screamed to run, to fight, to do something other than stand still while thousands of enhanced soldiers stared at him from every direction. He ignored all of it and stood exactly the way a soldier stood when called out by a commander. His back was straight to the chin level, his hands were loose at his sides."I'm transfered newly, from batch seven, and I came in with the northern convoy this morning." Ray said. His voice came out flatly and evenly, with the same calmness he had heard in every soldier he had fought since the cottage. He matched it exactly.Zed watched him from the platform without moving. The hall stayed quiet. Then Bleach spoke, sharply and impatiently, not even looking up from his tablet properly. "We had three new transfers from the northern convoy this morning. Stop wasting time on headcounts, Zed. We have a deployment schedule to hit."Zed didn't look away from Ray imme
Chapter 50 - What They Did To Her
Ray moved through the facility like he had always been familiar with the place. His head was forward, and his pace was steady. The mask was doing just enough work to keep faces from becoming a problem. He had maybe twenty minutes before Zed's suspicion turned into reality and he used every second wisely. The main corridor linked to three separate labs branching off the left side, each one sealed behind heavy glass doors. Ray slowed down at each one just long enough to look inside without stopping, the way a soldier might glance at something familiar rather than study something new.The first lab was the one he'd seen earlier they had surgical tables and bodies on them.Doctors were in protective suits working with the kind of focus that came from doing the same procedure too many times to feel anything about it anymore. The second lab stopped him cold.It was smaller than the first but it was packed tighter and every surface covered in equipment Ray had no names for.Screens were mo
